    This is a reason why fans shouldn't pick the players. Joe Mauer should absolutely start at catcher, but instead Varitek, undeserving, will, because people have heard of him. Leave it up to the managers and coaches, and maybe even the players.

    You might have forgotten that Papelbon's ERA is .46, approx. 1.50 less than Rivera. He also has 23 saves.

    But also, why do the Yankees keep going after the bats? Sure, now 3 guys are down, and ARod is struggling, but even without those 3 key contributors in the Yankee lineup, they still have a Top 10 offense in MLB. Their pitching is the real problem. Mussina is usually good, although he has had some rocky outings, Johnson is clearly aging, despite the occasional gem. After that, who? Jaret Wright can only go 5 innings usually. Their saviors Small and Chacon haven't done well this year. Wang is having a decent year, but a playoff rotation of Johnson, Moose, Wang and Wright? They couldn't get out of the DS.

    George couldn't stand to miss the playoffs when he could have done something about it, even if it would have meant dumping his ace of 10+ years to come. I say, do that trade, Brewers.

    From Ben Maller and the Herald: According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Yankees may be on the verge of acquiring slugger Carlos Lee from the Brewers. Former Sox executive Lee Thomas, who is now an assistant to Milwaukee GM Doug Melvin, was seen in Trenton, N.J., on Friday night scouting Yankees pitching prospect Philip Hughes, who allowed one hit and struck out eight for the Double-A Thunder. The Yankees are looking to replace injured outfielders Gary Sheffield and Hideki Matsui. EDIT: Already posted something similar.
