I am fine with this under two conditions. One, he is the backup. Not the Wakefield backup that the team has had the last few years, but he's the guy getting 30% of the starts. Two, the Sox acquire another young catcher for Varitek to mentor. I don't believe all the preparation stuff that comes out and how much Varitek is lauded by the staff, but if the Sox believe it and the pitching staff believes it there's redeeming value there. If he can mentor a young catcher to take over for him in two years, that would be best case scenario. A Varitek/Saltalamacchia platoon is very appealing to me, especially if Tek hits LHP and Saltalamacchia hits RHP exclusively.

Wang's sinker is devastating and he throws much harder than Lowe, although I'm fairly certain Lowe has a higher GB/FB ratio.
