  5. Ortiz back on the bench Posted by Peter Abraham, Globe Staff April 28, 2010 02:05 PM Terry Francona, on his paid WEEI gig, said that Victor Martinez would DH today with Jason Varitek catching. Varitek was 2 for 2 with two home runs against Brett Cecil in a game last May. For David Ortiz, this would mark the seventh time in 22 games that he does not start, the fourth time in the last eight games. Whether the Red Sox care to put a label on it, he's a platoon DH at this point. But the problem is Ortiz is at .146/.222/.341 against righhanded pitchers through 41 at-bats. Granted, that's a small sample size. But once Jacoby Ellsbury and Mike Cameron get back from the disabled list, it'll be hard to justify using Ortiz as even a platoon DH if Jeremy Hermida (.250/.302/.525) is available. Big Papi is at a crossroads. If he doesn't start to hit for power soon, the Red Sox will have to consider some uncomfortable possibilities.
  6. What to expect from Alan Embree Posted by Peter Abraham, Globe Staff April 28, 2010 11:44 AM Alan Embree returns to the majors today for the first time since he broke his leg last July. He was hit in the right shin by a line drive off the bat of Martin Prado. Now 40, Embree spent parts of the last two seasons with the Rockies and A's. He had a 5.36 ERA over 104 appearances with a 1.51 WHIP. He averaged 7.2 strikeouts per nine innings. Embree, of course, was with the Red Sox from 2002-05. He had a 4.69 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP during that stretch and averaged 7.8 strikeouts per nine innings. Oddly, lefties hit him better last season (.895 OPS) than did righthanders (.767 OPS). So Embree is not a classic lefty specialist. In Pawtucket, Embree has a rocky third outing that skewed his stats. But his last five appearances were perfect. Embree had five one-inning stints and didn't put a runner on base. At this point, Embree would seem to be a better option than Scott Schoeneweis, who has been rocked in medium and high leverage situations. The Red Sox will make to make another move on Saturday when Daisuke Matsuzaka is activated off the disabled list.
  7. Frandsen designated by Red Sox Posted by Peter Abraham, Globe Staff April 28, 2010 11:10 AM With Alan Embree on his way here, the Red Sox needed room on the 40-man roster. They have designated infielder Kevin Frandsen for assignment. Frandsen was hitting .258 with two homers and four RBI for Pawtucket. Frandsen was acquired from the Giants in spring training when the Sox became concerned about their depth at shortstop. LHP Fabio Castro was optioned back to Pawtucket to make room on the 25-man roster.
