Stat of the Day: Gomes is 11 of 29 in his last six games with two doubles, two homers and six RBIs. Notes: The Sox carry the best record in the American League into Comerica Park and a four-game series against the Central-leading Tigers. He was traded to Florida after the 2009 season (along with lefthander Hunter Jones) for outfielder Jeremy Hermida. The trade did not work out particularly well for any of the trio. Jones was released by the Marlins in 2010 and is now playing independent ball. Hermida was released by the Sox in August of 2010 and has played with four organizations since. Alvarez never made it beyond Double A with the Marlins and was signed by the Tigers over the winter as a minor league free agent. He was 5-4, 2.78 in 13 starts for Triple A Toledo before being called up. This is his second start. ... The Tigers are 23-12 at home and have won 56 of their last 79 games at Comerica. ... He'll get Thursday off against Detroit lefty Jose Alvarez. • David Ross is going to Pittsburgh Thursday to get checked out by concussion specialist Dr. Michael Collins at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. • Will Middlebrooks will pay third base Thursday and Friday. Jose Iglesias will play shortstop Thursday against the lefty. • Farrell again pledged his fealty to Andrew Bailey as the closer but said several times that work needs to be done on both his fastball and location of his breaking ball. Farrell said he has given no consideration to using anybody else as the closer. • Shane Victorino "is a little beat up" and is getting a day off.
