He is a gamer, but if his bat does not make a recovery, he has little left in the way of physical skills. Occasionally, he can throw out a 40 year old DH, but he usually cannot throw out anyone with all of his limbs. His value is in handling a pitching staff which will not be affected by age.

My first choice is that he not be traded, but it looks like a virtual certainty that he will be traded. My first choice of trade would be to get Peavy and pick up Bonds as a FA. My second choice of trade would be Scott Shields and Juan Rivera. Third choice is the Dodgers and I am not crazy about getting a bunch of unproven youngsters. Broxton looks good, but he could be just a hard thrower who is not as good as Beckett. EDit: Today's Herald mentions the Red Sox pursuit of Broxton and Toby Hall of the Dodgers. I would hope that substantially more than that would be involved.

I am sure that Marlins' management is motivated by hatred of the Red Sox. Too bad they didn't take that into account before they beat the Yankees in the 2003 World Series.

I disagree. I think their plan since 2004 has been poorly conceived and the execution was even worse. The FO acted like a bunch of babies last off-season with the destructive power struggle culminating in Theo's hissy fit quitting and rehiring. They botched last year's team badly and to their credit they held themselves accountable. I think they know that they have something to prove, and they have been indicating that they are playing to win, but their biggest short-coming has been their lack of follow through.

But it just doesn't make sense with guys like Lugo and Drew who are being actively pursued by teams and who have no interest in returning to their teams. Why wouldn't the Dodgers offer them arbitration? They have nothing to lose, because the pursuing teams are not going to back off because of a draft choice. It's an easy draft pick for the Dodgers, and the Red Sox would be fools to back off these guys because of draft choices. The waiting game for these guys is an exercise in futility.
