When Ortiz was with the Twins, the regular first baseman most of those years was Doug Mientkievicz who may have been a been one of the best glove men that I have ever seen at first. At Boston, Mientkievicz, Youkilis (a gold glover) and Olerud (gold glove) have been ahead of him. While no one is going to mistake Ortiz for Keith Hernandez at first base, the big guy is not that bad in the field. He has very good hands, decent footwork and a good arm. He is certainly better than Delgado who has atrocious hands. Ask Mets fans than watched that horror show. Also, Delgado's bad hip has impaired his mobility to the point where he has almost no range. I don't doubt that they will play Delgado at first ahead of Ortiz, but it will not be pretty.
