  1. I like Shane. He can be a bit of a hot head, but he plays hard and smart. I am not sure that he is a 1 year sign. I could see the Giants going after him.
  2. Bard was not an option. They decided to multiply the late inning woes that would be caused be losing their best closer in team history by making the 8th inning guy a starter. Take a look at the stats. One of the biggest fall-offs by the 2012 team was the late inning pen. In late and close situations, our pen gave up the most runs in the league. They also had the worst OBP. In 2011 they ranked 3rd in both categories. So, the late inning pen was a major weakness.
  3. We would have to over pay Granderson to get him from the Yankees. We are a dysfunctional circus. Why would he come here?
  4. Have you been enjoying the garbage that we roll out as late inning relievers this year?
  5. Well, this is a glimpse of the team with all the guys that those fans wanted to see sent away. They called Youkilis a whiner, Beckett a cancer, Papelbon greedy, and Ortiz a prima dona. Well, this is what we look like without them. Maybe they shouldn't be so happy to send Papi packing.
  6. It is baffling. Maybe they are afraid of exposing him.:dunno:
  7. As for overpaying players, the FO is going to realize in the off season that after a total fiasco like this season, they will have to overpay top talent to get them to come to Boston. The whole Boston scene is toxic right now and players will want a premium to subject themselves to it. We moan and cry about not being able to spend with the Yankees, but the truth is that they will be able to sign guys for less than Boston will be willing to pay, The Yankees are a top shelf professional organization. Boston is a 3 ring circus right now.
  8. When Kimbrel and Chapman do it for 6 or 7 years get back to me. Mo was great, but he is done now. Papelbon maybe the steadiest and most reliable closer out there now that Mo has gone to the glue factory.
  9. Is anyone arguing that he is not over-paid?
  10. All of our current players are a good value. How do you like this team?
  11. I wonder what NESN ratings will look like in September.
  12. Ahead is another month of meaningless unwatchable regular season games followed by a month of post season games without the Red Sox. We have a couple of months before players file for free agency, so there is really nothing for us to discuss about the Sox until then. Other than Pedroia, there isn't a single player who creates any interest with the bat, We have 1 good starting pitcher--one. Lester has become a mediocre pitcher that grinds games out in a tortuous manner. The rest of the rotation is stocked with pigs. My goodness what a pile of s***. After creating such a prolonged period of fan apathy, good luck to the FO in recapturing the interest of the fans.
  13. I think the metrics that he developed decades ago that are useful are well-known, and we don't need to pay Bill James to use them. Where this team needs to devote resources is to scouting. I have little regard for the use of sabremetrics with regard to scouting or even with regard to minor league stats.
  14. There's no logical connection there. Winning championships doesn't mean that every move or decision was a good one.
  15. Ok, bitter and facetious. I can relate to that.
  16. I don't think that it is lack of effort at this point, because a lot of those guys are playing for their futures down the stretch. I just don't think they have the horses to be competitive as a spoiler.
  17. I laugh that some of you will ooh and ahh over a guy who will have an excellent chance of never suiting up for the Red Sox. There is no silver lining to sucking in Baseball.
  18. Oh okay, let's rehire all the marginal performers from that era. That's a good strategy.
  19. Are you saying that the Sox should seek out employees who can contribute marginally and give them FO jobs? That doesn't sound like a sound approach to business. There's nothing James can do that some baseabll fan/nerd from MIT couldn't do as an intern. They'd probably love to do it for free.
  20. It's nice to get a win. I decided to get some sleep after Salty air mailed a throw into CF. It's good to see that Lavarnway hit one out. Was it a nice shot? Also Iglesias finally got a hit. Maybe they can build on this. Lester is still pitching like pre-May 2008 Lester. He's continues not to impress.
  21. Greinke is handling the pressure of the penant/wild card race just fine in LA. He shut down the red hot A's last night.
  22. It was foolishness to have the father of sabremetrics on the FO payroll. He's best suited for rotisserie sports.
  23. I think that he definitely wants out, and I don't think he will say goodbye to any of the prima donas in the clubhouse who probably turn his stomach.
  24. Enjoy the daily headaches starting at about 5, because you will come to know what to expect from your manager and squad.
  25. I would never call you a pom pom waiver except for the fact that after all these years, you still mischaracterize me in an offensive way. You've been here long enough to know better. I prefer to address the sports and opine about that than about my fellow TalkSox members.
