1. he making a good first impression on the team. Im hoping he can gete around 400 AB's this year. Give him some time in the OF, DH and maybe play a little 1st
2. the guy id like to see come in next year and kick is Stephen Gostkowski, kicker out of Memphis. I was watching some college kickers challenge on ESPN in January and Gostkowski won the accuracy challenge and the distance challenge over all the other top kickers in the country. He looked really good to me. Hes also a pitcher in the Tigers minor league system
3. Bronson Arroyo has always been a good clubhouse guy and probaly had good chemistry with everyone else, but as a pitcher he was just another average joe. His career stats are almost the exact same as Jeff Suppan's (Suppan has pitched in more games though since hes 3 years older). His role on this team this year would have been spot starter/long reliever, which isnt a hard position to find. He just wasnt needed on the team and if you can get someone with as much talent as Willy Mo, a possible 40 HR guy, for a long-reliever/spot starter, you make that deal.
4. We dont know that about Pena yet. Hes only 24. We know what we would have gotten from Arroyo. A decent reliever who would have made a couple of starts for some reason or another. He really had no spot on this team. Theres no need for carrying 7 starters on your 25 man roster
5. Bronsons's a decent pitcher who i would have been fine with in the rotation, but if your being offered a 24 year old power hitting machine for a #5 starter, i think ill take that deal anyday. Arroyo has already peaked to his potential, which is not an important position for the team right now. They have 6 starters who IMO are all better than arroyo. They had a need for a right handed hitting power prospect, especially after they got rid of Marte and they got a good one in Pena.
6. Bronson Arroyo was one of the most overrated pitchers on the Sox the last couple of years. He was WAY to inconsistent. One game he'd be racking up K's the next hes be leaving hanging breaking balls over the plate. He's never had dominating stuff and IMO if you dont have extremely good stuff, you need to be a very accurate pitcher in order to succeed. career stats Jeff Suppan-- 94-94 4.66 era Bronson Arroyo-- 33-33 4.60 era
7. http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20060321&content_id=1358250&vkey=spt2006news&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb now hes atleast thinking about it.
8. Vanderjagt...:thumbdown i wouldnt mind signing edinger though, hes not bad.
9. i know you can't say anything bad about the Pats front office, but what the hell are they thinking. They've signed 1 guy this offseason, a decent #3 receiver. They havnt even tried to keep any of their free agents
10. Chris Snow on Willy Mo
11. if i could play in the MLB, i wouldnt give a s*** what position i played. Hes your typical spoiled athlete who only wants to do what he wants. Why want he play OF, that doesnt make sense. Hes a more valuable OF than a 2nd baseman since his defense sucks. On the other hand, the Nationals should have made sure that Soriano would be willing to play OF for them before they made the deal. Its common sense.
12. PECOTAS prediciton for Pena--.282 avg.--33 HR--87 RBI--71 runs--5 steals this was before the trade today anyone heard of any other possible deals. Maybe a new manny deal or a trade with nixon?
13. Arroyo was a good #5 starter/reliever but i wouldnt say he was a good top of the rotation guy
14. i dont see how anyone can consider this a bad move. Arroyo is a good, not great 5th starter who is probably never going to be better than he was in 2004. I think he was probably one of the most overrated guys on the team last year. Pena is a 24 year-old ridiculous athlete. He has good speed, along with unbelievable power. After the red sox traded marte, they were in need of a young right handed power hitter. This year he'll probably only platoon with Trot in right, which i think is good for him. His stats against lefties last year were MUCH better than they were against righties. He'll get a solid amount of AB's and he gets to watch and learn from guys like David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez. AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI TB BB SO SB CS OBP SLG AVG Righties--201 28 47 11 0 12 33 94 12 75 2 0 .282 .468 .234 Lefties---110 14 32 6 0 7 18 59 8 41 0 1 .345 .536 .291
15. http://www.daytondailynews.com/search/content/sports/reds/daily/0224redsweb.html interesting article on boston dirt dogs on Pena
16. he was IMO the best commissioner left out of the 4 major sports, MLB, NHL and NBA
17. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2376850
18. ya exactly. If you strike out 120 times in 310 AB's, you better be either hitting .300 or getting a LOT of walks
19. Oritz didnt break through till he was 27 so Pena, only 24, has some time to work with
20. thats exactly what he is, minus the speed
21. ino its freaking amazing how far he can hit the ball. The problem is that he is looking for a HR every AB. Ortiz's 2001 stats(MIN, 25)--.234 avg--.475 slug--.324 obp--18 HR--48 RBI--70 K--302 AB Ortiz's 2002 stats(MIN, 26)--.270 avg--.500 slug--.338 obp--20 HR--75 RBI--88 K--412 AB Ortiz's 2003 stats(BOS, 27)--.288 avg--.592 slug--.369 obp--31 HR--101 RBI--82 K--448 AB and he has gotten better each year since then Pena's 2004 stats(CIN, 22)--.259 avg--.527 slug--.316 obp--26 HR--66 RBI--108 K--336 AB Pena's 2005 stats(CIN, 23)--.254 avg--.495 slug--.304 obp--19 HR--51 RBI--116 K--311 AB Pena's 2006 stats(BOS, 24)--??????????? the biggest problem I see with Pena is plate discipline. Last year he had 116 K's to 20 BB, which is horrendous. Hopefully papa jack can work with him and turn him into an all-star
22. i was just watching some of willy mo's HR last year on MLB.com, and almost everyone of them landed atleast 10 rows deep in the bleachers. This guy has a pure power swing and at Fenway should put up ridiculous numbers. I see him as somewhat of an Ortiz type guy who has always had power, but never has put it all together with the plate discipline and stuff like that.
23. ya ive always liked Bronson to as he is a good competitor and he seemed to have liked it here in Boston. Good luck to him in Cinci
