Red Sox 2012/2013 Offseason Thread

Same here BSN. Look, we've seen this scene before. Vasquez has been a human pinata pitching in the AL East and now that he is older he is not suddenly going to start showing us some drumfire performances he didn't show before. Jurrgens does have some upsides in that they dont know him in the AL, plus he is younger and a better fit for us just on those two items alone. -

jopete, we need better pitching and Im hoping Jon, Clay and the rest of the crew can improve enough to give it to us. They also have to stay in one piece and stay off the DL. And speaking of Bill Mueller, since I've followed the Red Sox the past 12+ years he is my all time favorite Red Sox player. I liked his style, hustle and hard nosed play when he played for the Giants and Cubs and was elated when the Red Sox got him in 2003. He left it all on the field and was the classic overachiever----a winner all the way. -

I hear you Spitball and your argument makes a helluva lot of sense to me. It all seems so neat, cut and dried and bada bing bada bo. HOWEVER, we are talking about the star crossed Red Sox and that dreaded "mystery team" someone on this board mentioned a couple of days ago (sorry I can't remember who to give them credit). We've been waylaid by "mystery teams" before. I would hope the Sox don't drag this out longer than they have to. I'm already of the mind they should just move on, even though I was front and center with my applause at his signing. I think he would be great for Fenway Park, but the longer we wait we risk that "mystery" team and all other options taken from us save for Gomez, and that is one option I cannot and will not ever accept. -

That's what I said. FIRST BASE!!!!!!! That's where we need him and if it costs us a prospect, an ML reserve and a reliever I say go. Again and again and again, I do not want Mauro Gomez playing first base for us this year because IMHO it would undo some of the better moves we've made so far this off season. Gomes and Kalish will be fine for LF but Gomez will most not definitely be fine for first base. Get Morse!!!!!!! -

And then what BSN??????? Gomez??????? No f***ing way!!!!!!! We need a first baseman and we have the chips to trade for him. And remember, we do NOT have another decent first base prospect anywhere in our system. We could be set there for the next five years if we get him. And if you're reading this User, once again my friend BSN has hinted at passing on Morse. That only reads GOMEZ to me and him on first base for us is too hateful for me to contemplate. -

Ted---we have more pieces to trade with the Nats than the Yankees do. We have a better minor league farm system (now rated No. 5) and we now have more depth as well. If we want Morse we should be able to get him IMO. If we don't it can only be because we crapped out and didn't step up. We need a first baseman at least as badly as the Yankees need an outfielder. I am not giving our front office any parachute to use as another hallow excuse to do nothing. -

I think that Morse wo uld cost us a decent prospect as well as a good reliever. We have both but we don't have a first baseman worthy of the name. I would like to see the Red Sox get Morse. He would be a good 30+ homer man playing half his games at Fenway. Let's not kick tires and show interest and wind up empty handed this time. We have the means to land this guy and Cherington has no excuses not to get it done IMHO.:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup: -

Any idea who the guy was Ted? He seemed to challenge you on everything you wrote. Apparently he came on before with a different handle and caused some problems. Well he wont bother you for awhile. Now for some news about Napoli or our new first baseman not named Gomez. -

seabeachfred replied to lospunchados's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
If our brain challenged front office now has proof positive that Napoli has an arthritic hip they now have no excuses for their stumbling and bumbling around on this issue. Run as fast and as far away as you can on this soap opera, and make a move on LaRoche, seek a trade for Morneau or Ike Davis or Morse or anyone not named Mauro Gomez. It is high time this sad joke of trying to find a first baseman comes to an inglorious end. -

I've been going back and forth with User the past couple of weeks but earlier he hit a home run when he said we most likely blew it when we didn't get Dan Haren. I said this before he became a free agent because everyone I talked to connected in any way with the Angels insisted they were not ging to pick up his option. He showed me plenty the last part of the season when he seemed to finally be free of arm and elbow troubles. I think we should have either traded for him or leaped at him the moment he became a free agent. And for the record, I still insist we should make a concerted effort to get Shawn Marcum. Now he's no No. 1 ace but I think he could be a solid No. 3, and keep in mind he has extensive exerience competing in the AL East. There still is time to grab him if we have the will. -

Honest User????? I really don't know. My heart says t hey had to be exploring all avenues to improve the pitching but my head was saying something entirely different. By now you know I have my doubts about the ability of our front office. I'm taking the high road for this coming season actually believing that Lester and Buchholz can finally have their big seasons and that Lackey and Doubrant will stand up and be counted. If that doesn't happen it will be another long season. I will have to endure it if it happens but I'm just crazy enough to go off the deep end if it happens. I want a s uccessful 2013 season as bad and you or anyone else on this board. -

Fine BSN---that makes things a lot clearer for me. As for the Dempster signing, I didn't know you had such a negative reaction to it. For me, I just shrugged as said another half-ass signing even though I keep hoping me might work out. I don't know if you knew or remembered this but I coached baseball teams for over30 years until I retired from it after the 1996 season. I started in Pony, went to Colt, then Connie Mack, Senior Babe Ruth and Stan Musial---from 13 to the thirties. I also scouted.....not for a team but for scouts who valued by jdgment of talent. That is why I often take a very aggressive stance against the front office. I never thought Theo Epstein was a ver good judge of talent and I think Cherington is even worse, if that is possible. Unlike you, however, I still have little confidence in the front office actually knowing what their overall plan is. And keep this in mind....there is nothing personal in my arguing with you when we disagree. I know you're a solid baseball man. We just see some things differently. -

You sound like we've just come off a good run of success and must plan carefully for the future when in fact we've come off four years of failure and underachieving and five years in which we have won NOTHING!!!!!! Why wasn't things being done when we were on top to keep us there? Instead rot was allowed to eat into the very core of the team. Some of us are tired of this failure and demanding action to get us back on top. This planning for the future is neither a panacea or guarantee that we will get there. You win with solid players with experience and adding a good young player or two each year. You don't by planning on getting them all together at one time and flood them into the lineup. We won the former way in 2007. We have forgotten how to do that---the FO, that is. -

And how do you know that trades for SP were exploited? You don't know any more than the rest of us who think otherwise. You see, we're on to you and your blind faith and confidence and support of the front office. Some of us aren't and we have the last four years of failure as all the proof we need that those in charge of the Red Sox have done a s***** job in getting the team up to speed. As for 700 not understanding the Red Sox approach, where the hell do y ou come off saying something as stupid as that? Ted isn't wearing a blindfold in seeing how ineptly the team has been run these past few years. -

Well you can take what 700 says to your favorite bank. He doesn't pull any punches and even makes me a milk toast by comparison. My friend took me to task because he thought I was being too unrealistic for believing the Red Sox might surprise people this year when in reality my point was that we JUST HAD TO BE BETTER THAN THAT SHITPILE OF A TEAM WE HAD LAST SEASON. To me that would be an improvement, maybe even a big one. However, you, 700, iortiz and others are firmly in the belief that the Red Sox front office has been close to incompetent the past few seasons and we have been going at it with the pollyannas, apologists and ball washers who keep defending them even when they are trying to criticise them with their meely mouth rationalizations. Yes I do think we could m ake a comeback this season IF Lester and Buchholz have big years and Lackey comes back and pitches as he did before he got hurt. I also think we then could get by with our offense and should have a good bullpen, but I said could, not will. If JL and CB s*** in the bed we are done, and one thing I will never retreat on one twit. Our front office has done a s***** job the past few years and I still dont know what the hell their program is for this year or the next few seasons. I don't think they know either. -

BSN, let's get one thing straight. If I think you are a ballwasher I will tell your straight off. I know no other way. I do think you may be an apologist. This stuff, I understood the move but didn't mean I liked it, is pure fluff. If you didn't like the move you should have said so and not try and throw the front office a parachute. Under normal circumstances I could have lived with the trade but with Kalish hurt and Drew gone we might have held onto Reddick since that made us weak in the outfield but my gripe with you is the here and now. I don't know how you cannot judge it. Sweeney is gone and Bailey may soon follow, that or he is relegated to a minor and not the closing role. Meanwhile Reddick is not an All Star. With the AL East now anyone's pick the Red Sox should always be contending. You can do both as we did in 2007 when the division was even stronger. -

I read them carefully enough and know full well that when you do offer criticism it is also loaded with qualifications and rationalizations that end up nothing more than a lame excuse to keep defending the Red Sox front office. As for other posters I read them to and in no way does your "critical analysis" come even close to the stuff written by 700, Palodios, Sox Sport or even iortiz. The only terminal case I can see is that you actually believe you take a tough stance against some of the crap the front office when in fact it full of holes, excuses and rationalizations. But don't let me stop you MVP; go right ahead with your "tough" stance towards the front office. Pretending that have a salubrious effect on a person. -
"whiny little bitches"??????? A little personal don't you think? First of all numbnuts a bitch is a female dog and I know my Brittany, Lucy, Penny and Brianna wouldn't like hearing that kind of s*** coming from you any more than I do. You crossed the line with that remark User and from here on in it will be tit for tat. I also don't give a damn what the Pirates or any other team is doing or how bad they are. I only care about the Red Sox and I was totally embarassed at how crappy they were last season. There was no excuse for the team finishing as poorly as it did. And the buck stops with the front office; they built the team and they did a s***** job of it. The 69-93 record speaks volumes more than any lame excuse you can lay their way. :thumbdown:thumbdown:thumbdown:thumbdown:thumbdown:thumbdown:thumbdown

Well this year we will both be on this board come what may---right???????? By then you'll have your degree and I will be in a better frame of mind because my vibes tell me the Red Sox will be a better team in 2013. Then we can joust about other things and maybe even agree with one another on occasion. -

Since the Red Sox have gone from the penthouse to the outhouse in five years, it stands to reason our front office hasn't done a very good job. That has to be obvious to everyone but the stubborn acoyltes who defend Cherington and Company, Lucchino and Henry to their last breath. It's no fun running down the front office but its a hell of lot less fun watching your team get the s*** knocked out of them as we've seen the past year. The moves this winter have been pretty good in my opinion, that is, if we can finally finalize the Napoli mystery, but we still could have done a better job getting another decent pitcher or two. We have time to do that, but as I look at the team presently constructed just about everything, health, talent, luck, everything, break right for us this season for us to make the Playoffs, or maybe the gift of all gifts considering how poorly we've done the past few years, an AL East Title. -

Whoa!!!!!!! I was under the impression that you went to Fenway last July, at least that's what you were telling all of us. I left the board in June because I was so pissed off at the way the team was playing. I didnt hear that you never went. Make sure you go this year. I think we will have a much better season. -

How about a little dose of realism here guys. You can talk of this trade not being a true gauge of who got the best of who until a few years down the road, but that is pure ********!!!!! Only ball washers and front office apologists would even dare to mutter such rubbish. The A's got a guy who will hit between 25-30 homers for the next few years, a minor league first baseman who is better than any first base prospect we have in our system. What did we get? A bum like Sweeney who showed no power, no speed and is no longer part of the team. We got a "closer" who came up lame doing a jumping jack, then was out for practically the whole freakin' season, and is no longer our closer. This is a prime example of those of us who are criticized for being on the front office's case as to why we have gone from first to last in just five short years. You don't get there without a large number of those bungled moves no matter what the apologists and water carriers for the front office say. -
Well here's one that is not a "what if". In 2007 we won the WS; in 2012 we were dead last in the division with a miserable 69-93 record. How did we get there, by sound moves, good trades, and and effective front office? Maybe if some of those "what ifs" you keep harping on had come to fruition we wouldn't be in the toilet right now. The only thing that I wonder about between you and your compadre UN is which one of you takes on the role of Don Quixote and who is Sergo Panza. So tell me, how the hell did we go from first to dead last in five seasons? Maybe by osmosis???
-
The queston hasn't been answered because lame attempt to defend the front office (again) would be totally assinine. You don't go from WS Champions to cellear dwellers and become one of the three or four worst teams in baseball because your front office is doing all the right things. You go there because the front office has made a ton of mistakes over those five years. I also know that your idea of blabbing nonsense is when anyone attacks your beloved heroes in the front office. You just can't help yourself; even when your give one of your yearly criticisms of something they do, you throw them a parachute. Why not just come out and admit you're a ball washer and automaton for the front office. I haven't heard you once give them a going over for one thing they've done wrong without qualifying it with nonsense of a defense of them.

Notice Ted that suddenly our two friends have no answer to your retort. Pretty much what have to expect when they take the usual party line and becomes emperors with no clothes.
