Red Sox 2012/2013 Offseason Thread

I think you have trouble reading intuitively. Sox Sport got it, Dojii got it, I got it. You didn't. You're the idiot. Again, there is no comparison in the talent level between the two in question. That was never the consideration; it was that a wrist injury can impair performance no matter how good you are or how mediocre you are. Stop being a moron. -

No problem Bro. It's not as if I haven't goofed before. Good to keep me on my toes just in case. My friend Spitball has shown me the right road a couple of times before. Always good to proofread what I write. For a minute I thought I had goofed up. -

Could be Spitball but truth be told I don't know for sure. I assumed Sox Sport was either trying to make a point of some comparison or knew it was a wrist. All I do know is two things. One, Nava usually fades like an old pair of genes after a month or two of playing over his head---and two, I pretty much threw in the towel last August. It got too painful for me to even watch the Red Sox on my computer screen via the MLB package. Either way, if we really have to depend on Nava or recent reject and resigned Sweeney to platoon in left field with Gomes we are in a pretty sad state out there. This is the position Williams, Yaz, Rice and Manny played. And now we have these two?????? Pathetic!!!!!! -

Softlaw---I took a couple of months hiatus from that board. Like you I can't stand reading propaganda by ball washers or front office apologists. We have some here too, but we also have a lot more independent thinking people. I will start posting there again soon. Hope you will still be there as well. -

Very true SFF, but if you re-read my post I said he can't hit lefthanded worth a damn. Left handed hitter vs a RH pitcher? -

Never liked his swing either my friend. I liked his wide open stance even less and I think his injuries actually slowed his bat speed down considerably when he came to the Red Sox. You have to close up real fast to meet up with the ball when you're that open and I noticed he was late doing it much of the time, that plus, he started swinging at a lot of bad pitches and his defense also was pretty crappy. I'm glad we got rid of that contract of his and maybe in the NL he will come back, but it wouldn't surprise me if his slide keeps going. But resigning Sweeney? The guy has no power, is not a run production guy and only is good for singled and some defense. You mean we can't do better that Sweeney and Nava? -

He's mentioning Batista because he had his production hampered by a bad wrist just as Nava was. That was Sox Sport's point....a bad wrist can impede a player's production. He never compared the two talent wise, so I can't see where you come off getting on his case. It seems you're always telling the truth and o thers are lying. Dojii called it right---get your damn facts straight and stop attacking posters you disagree with, and I'm still waiting to see you finally finding something to disagree with the front office about, but I can't hold my breath forever. -
Don't count that out SFF. The Red Sox front office is notorious for sending down players with options for "more damn seasoning." I hope not and I hope further that Bard is given just enough rope to hang himself. IMHO he is through with the Red Sox, a worse case than Craig Hansen and we all know what happened to him. BarF is mentally all f***ed up, is mechanics are in retreat and he doesn't seem to have the smarts to know what to do to remedy his decline. The front office still plays favorites---we saw that for years with Manny Delgarbage. We kept him for almost six, he has one half-good year (2007) and stunk the rest of the time. Within two years he was out of baseball, dropped by Colorado and New York. This front office of ours has a hard time learning from their mistakes.

Crawford had tremendous talent but was just a very bad fit for Boston. I don't think he liked the pressure or the crowds and tumult that surrounded the city. Keep in mind too, however, that Victorino isn't exactly a work-the-count artist either. He hacks away and can't hit lefthanded to save his sorry ass........at least the past two seasons he hasn't, and we don't plan on platooning him. After saying that Philadelphia was still in his heart and was the place he really wanted to go, he had better get off to a solid start for the Red Sox or his ass will be hanging out to dry by the press, fans, media and everyone but the rumpswabs who will applaude on cue whenever the front office tells them to. -

Sox Sport, we agree on that one. No DECENT or top notch prospects for Smoak, but an average one or two in the lower minors and a reliever might work. I think we are on the same page that we cannot count on Gomes to play out there full time. The guy is a defensive tsunami and the idea we should use Nava as his platoon mate leaves me with a painful toothache. Garrett Jones? He'd be better but he would cost us---you do know that? Well we will just have to say what Cherington has up his sleeve on this one, and you know by now what kind of confidence I have in him. -

What the hell is wrong with players in the Red Sox organization!!!!!!!!!! We seem to have a bunch of fragile candy ass players who can't seem to stay in one piece, and then take eons to get back in shape and in the lineup. We know our medical staff has come in for some legitimate criticism the past few years and some of their people seemed to be totally inept, but a lot of this is on the players too. I also was on the Kalish bandwagon but this is getting to be a farce. The guy is made of crepe paper and if he sneezes he needs to go under the knife. This is the point we have to move on. Whatever the hell it is this time the fact is Ryan simply cannot stay healthy. He must just have one s***** body makeup. Sorry to hear about the guy because he deserves better but we could have used him and now we need another outfielder and there aren't any available-----and, please, don't anyone start to try and sell me on Nava. He's a nice kid and a nice story but every year he gets hot and then turns Arctic when things get real tough. -

Sorry Sox Sport, not this time. Anderson is a three time loser...the Red Sox no longer wanted him, the Guardians couldn't find a place for him even though they needed hitting and apparently "Lazy Lars" had such measly value on the open market that that D'Backs simply DFA's him without trying hard to trade him. Smoak is a switch hitting first baseman and get him out of that airport he plays in Seattle and the power would most likely increase. Besides, he has ML experience, Anderson does not, and again, he never fully showed he had what it took when he was in the Red Sox organization. He sure didn't transfer his good Spring last year into a good regular season. I would take a chance on trading f or Smoak before taking "Lazy Lars" back. -

"Lazy Lars", as we called hi on another board, was a total and complete underachiever, a lot of promise and nothing of substance achieved. He was a very cerebral player when he was in the Red Sox organization and said baseball was only one of his numerous areas of interest. I gave him a red flag right then and he lived up to my low opinion of him. Anthony Rizzo buzzed by him on the prospect list after the Red Sox stupidly put "Lazy Lars" at the top of theirs. He was sent to the Guardians and they apparently didn't care for him and now Arizona doesn't even wait until ST to show him the door. Everyone here knows how little use I have for Mauro Gomes, right? Well I would rather have Gomez than Anderson. The guy is a big good looking young man, the sexy type that Lucchino talks about, but he is a total empty uniform. No thanks!!!!!!! -

Welcome aboard Who?. Glad to have you here....and you are right about that bond. We play in the two classic ballparks of a bygone era, we have been star crossed, and we both have some rabid fans along with a neighborhood that breaths baseball the year round. I still hark back to 2003 and your damn Bartman and our damn Little. We could have both met up in the 2003 WS, and I stil think really lost something when that didn't happen. I also remember that WS between the Yankees and Marlins and totally dull and uninspiring and not of much interest to anyone outside of New York and Miami. Hell, if it had been us the whole country would have been jumping. Maybe one year at the end of this decade we have such a battle. Again, welcome aboard. -

Here's a little food for thought. I live in the Los Angeles area, the husband of a diehard Angels fan. We get a small package of Angels tickets just about every year, that in exchange for Linda's giving me free reign to travel to Boston, New York, ChiTown or wherever I want to see the Red Sox. John Lackey did some of his best pitching when Mike Napoli was catching him. I think Farrell ought to explore that possiibility, that is, if he has any plans to catch Mike at all. -

Well at least you have an inside training complex where you get some vigorous practice sessions in. When I coached high school baseball back in the early 70's, every time I woke up the first thing I did was look at the skies and then head for the newspaper to see what the weather was that February, March or April. We weren't home free until late April when the weather ceased being potentially inclement. When I decided to get my own baseball program outside of school where we played from April through August I got the good weather and never had to worry about it. Tough when you have to concern yourself with the both the weather and the opposition. Believe me, I know where you're coming from. -

MVP, personally I think that was very uncalled for. I try to give credit where credit is due and your take on our success resting on our pitching was right on and so I said so. I also never recall personally calling you a ballwasher. I also wonder if I agree again with something you write and say so, whether or not you will acknowlege it and say you were wrong to say I would rip you the next time. I get the impression that something is really bothering you. I hope not and hope you are having a good day. :D:D:D:D:D:D:D -

I'm almost afraid to praise you Sox Sport for a terrific post because the last guy I praised for saying something intelligent jumped me for saying something he didn't like last time around. Be that as it may, you hit the nail on the head. For my part I have always insisted that Francona's value as a manager of the Red Sox was done by the end of the 2009 season and it was at that time he should have been sent packing. He will be remembered for being the skipper on two WS Title Teams and whether he has a big part in that or not, he was the manager when those titles were won and deserves some credit along with the players---even though I personally thought he cost us games every year. However, in 2008 and 2009 I strongly believe he cost us division titles and a better chance to get to another World Series. In '08, we had a severly deteriorating Jason Varitek seemingly always coming to the plate in a slew of close games and failing miserably from June on and never once did Francona ever pinch hit for him. I counted eight games that summer when maybe we could have won a key game we lost with a pinch hitter instead of Varitek--who, BTW, carried this fadeaway from 2008 to 2011 every year when the calendar reached mid-June. In 2009, we had a three game lead at the ASB and proceeded to piss it away within a week. Two crucial series with the Yankees spelled our doom. In the first, a four game series Tito decided to go with a slumping John Smoltz on the hill when Josh Beckett was fully rested to go. Smoltz was shelled, but we scored seven runs in a defeat. The next day, a scoreless one to the 15th inning, Beckett threw eight innings of shutout ball. Had he thrown the first game we no doubt would have won. BTW, Smoltz was released two days later---to late for me though and too late for the team. The next series there was a fully rested Jon Lester ready to take on the Yankees. Instead he went to a slumping Brad Penny who also got shelled. We scored nine runs in that game I think. If Lester had thrown we would have won that game too. Instead we won only one game of the seven we played with the Yankees. Miserable managing. BTW, Penny was also released after that game. I would say anything about 2011. We all know the guy was totally distracted by a divorce, living in a hotel away from his family, his health not the best at that time and his son on the way to Afghanistan. I don't defend Lucchino at all; he did want splashy players and Werner was always worried about crowds, but Francona stayed a couple of years too many in my opinion. -

Kuddos mvp!!!!! We're on the same page with this one. We have to get solid pitching and right now our rotation is a big questionmark---and that may be being kind about it. I think added a No. 1 type is now a pipe dream but a Marcum or Lohse would certainly give us some needed depth in starters, especially if one of the regulars comes up lame. I've seen it bandied about that we have between $9 and $17 million dollars short of the ML limit and reports are the team would spend over that amount if they feel they could g et a a quality player or two. We do have a glut at catcher and a few extra relievers. Either we could use that extra money for pitcher on the FA level or one of our surplus of catchers and or relievers for that extra starter. The starters have to come through this season or we face the prospect of a third place finish at best, but we wouldn't even be having this conversation if Jon Lester and Clay Buchholz would pitch finally to their capabilities. And laugh if you will but I think John Lackey is going to be a very pleasant surprise this season. -

Believe it or not we had one helluva cold snap out here is supposedly warm and sunny Southern California----I kid you not. It got down to 32 degrees on two evenings and one morning I got up to go and work out when the temperature read 34 degrees. They even said that in some of the citrus areas the ranchers were worrying about losing half their crop because it got down to 29 in some areas. It has been great the last three days in the high 70's and helps making me think that baseball may not be that far away. To me Spring is the best time of year. Hope it come fast this time around. -

Dojii, you've been carrying a torch for this guy for some time now. It is starting to pay off. I'm now on board. I think he would worth a try because he won't cost much and if he's recovered from his arm miseries he could be a helpful addition by the summer. I think Ben should go for it. Truth be told, though, I would also like to see us add Marcum as well---and that might cost us some cash. -

Someone here, maybe it was you Palodios, showed that our pitching staff had an ERA much higher when Satalamacchia caught and that a few of our pitchers did not like pitching to him. Look, Lavarnway is going to be 25 and he doesn't need to be sent down again for more seasoning. Give the guy the job and let him run with it. I would be willing to wager that by the trading deadline he would have a better OBP than Salty, our team's ERA would be better with him catching and we can add another young player to our lineup. The one thing about Napoli catching that intrigues me is that John Lackey loved throwing to him when he played for the Angels. Psychological? Well we know how the mind can influence a baseball player's talent and progress. Just thinking out loud. -

Not to belabor the point but I'm sure what Ted was saying was that he and I had a lot of fun growing up when we did in Brooklyn and Queens. I would not want to live there now because I am a Californian through and through deep into my bones. However, I was once taught that if a person was ashamed of where he came from he wasn't much of a man and I can appreciate those 14 years I lived there. BTW, my maternal grandparents once lived at 1312 65th Street, just one block from the New Utrecht Sea Beach station and the 62nd St West End station. Now back to baseball---what do you say? How about us getting another starting pitcher if we can and a hitter who can spell one of our regulars should one of them go down as they have so much the past for seasons? -
