  1. haha I think for closers its the proper argument. BTW Sabermetricians such as Rob Neyer have also said Nathan and Rivera have been the best closers in the league.
  2. If I was back pedaling I wouldnt post anymore. Again I dont think bringing Rivera into this is fair because if you look at both Hoffman and Rivera's career numbers they are rather similar. What sets them apart in the minds of many fans is Rivera's 0.81 post season ERA. Regualar season wise you could make the argument Hoffman has been just as good but when you factor in the post season its not even close. Its apples and oranges IMO.
  3. Well of course I dont but I dont need the stats to tell me that either. Rivera's legend is buit on not only his dominance in the regular season but IMO mostly on his post season dominance. When Hoffman was given that 1 chance he pretty much ended the Padres chances at making that 98 WS a series. Again I said in my last post that over time(3 year period or so) I think Paplebon would be the better closer however if you look at it today(just today) Nathan IMO has been both dominate and more efficient.
  4. Its funny. I'll never forget Russel Branyan. Back in 1999 the Yankees were playing the Guardians at the stadium and Branyan was starting in LF. During the game Branyan was getting destroyed by a couple of fans. It was non stop Russ sucks ETC and Branyan would go right back at them. It went on for the entire game. That was the more entertaining thing about that game besides the Ricky Ledee walk off.
  5. Yeah, I turned to the channel that was sopposed to have the Sox game and they still had the Cubs game on but I found it on another channel also.
  6. I was thinking back and I could only come up with the 2002 Angels being that only exception to the rule. Their starting pitching wasnt that good but because of that dominate bullpen with Percival leading the way the other team couldnt match up with the Angels late inning magic.
  7. That was quick. I'm sure the D-Rays would have been better if they kept him in the minors and let the Greg Norton's and the Russell Branyon's of the world start.
  8. True, its hard to complain about guys like Cone, Pettitte, Wells, El Duque. All very good to amazing post season pitchers. I'm actually agree with you. If you want to get the most out of Paplebon it would be in the roation however depending on the team you might need a dominate closer.
  9. The idea that Jeter shouldnt be considered for the MVP is crazy. Jeter actually has a very slight edge in VORP over Ortiz: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/statistics/sortable/index.php?cid=9653 Jeter is very worthy.
  10. Just ask the Yankees how many WS they would have without Mariano Rivera.
  11. Thats true, over the long run you would figure that the guy who has a lower ERA and WHIP would be more successful. However in this particular case dont you think you are more likely to win more games with the guy who is 27/28 or the guy who is 34/40?
  12. Your right and most of the time thats what seperates good pitchers from great pitchers. Pedro Martinez cant break a window anymore yet he can cut his fastball, sink his fastball, and put the ball where he wants to. The NL over the past 2 seasons have a BAA just over .200.
  13. Hammer is right. Its all about movement and control. Ask Greg Maddux who is going into the hall based on being able to make his ball move and putting the ball where he wants too.
  14. Read my last post. It explains what I really mean. The chances are certainly a factor. There is no doubt that Paplebon while saving games has been dominate. My only point is that Nathan when given the chance has not only dominated(not to the point like Paplebon) but when given the chance to save games hes gotten the job done more often.
  15. Sure saves and wins are meaningless however how meaningless are blown saves? I understand saves can easily be the product of what team your on HOWEVER once you are given that chance how many times do you succeed? Thats my point. Nathan is 27/28, I'll take the guy that when given the chance to close games is more efficient then the guy who is 34/40 and dominating in the process. My arguement isnt about total saves its about when given the chance to close games how many times do you get the job done.
  16. Hes pitched around 10 less innings however 1 blown save this far into the season is pretty damn good. At the end of the day a closers job is to save the game and I dont think you can be the best closer in the league if you have 6 blown saves no matter how sexy his secondary stats are.
  17. You dont think Joe Nathan has an arguement? He only has 1 blown save. His ERA might not be as sexy as Paplebon's but he does have 5 less blown saves.
  18. Oh, if your asking me if I personally think that he wants to pitch in NY my anwser would be no and I'm sure he would lie to the media my only point is I never heard Carl Pavano himself say that publicly.
  19. Do some research. If you cant pull it out of your ass then dont talk out of your ass. I have never heard Pavano say point blank "I dont want to pitch anymore in NY". I remember there was a story about Pavano telling friends that he doesnt want to pitch in NY but when asked Pavano denied the story. Thats not the samething as "I thought he made it very clear in the offseason that he never wanted to pitch for the Yankees again."
  20. I dont recall him ever saying that. I do recall people saying that for him. Got a link?
  21. I'm sorry but when the Red Sox season went down the drain so did Ortiz's chances of winning the MVP. Hes had a brillent season but there are too many people having great seasons on playoff clubs. If you were to give it to someone who didnt make the playoffs I think Hafner would win. BTW All the best to Ortiz.
  22. I understand, I'm just saying those comparisons are valid only because A-Rod is having his worst season.
  23. If A-Rod was having the year he had last season there would be no comparison. In fact if A-Rod were having his regular season there still would be no comparison. David Wright will be lucky to have the career A-Rod has had and is going to have.
  24. Outside of Paplebon they all should wear bags over their heads.
