  1. Thanks SFOC! You are GREAT! I hope your twins had a great birthday (with a dad like you, I'm sure they did!)
  2. I am SO excited to hear about Gabe...he is one of my favorites (such a class act in my opinion). I am anxious to hear how he does once Spring Training starts up.
  3. I haven't had luck either, and I'm even wearing my lucky Red Sox shirt! There's always the chance that we could win the lottery for getting Yankees tickets or Green Monster tickets (which there should be more info on the Sox site soon I would think).
  4. Ok SFOC, once again you've twisted my arm! I'm in (although I'm not much of a football fan, I'll have my 3rd graders help me!)!
  5. Great idea! I love that so many of us on this site are generous souls! Hopefully this means we have some good karma out there!
  6. I just wanted to let you know that today, the last day of school before Christmas vacation, I was able to let my kids unwrap the books I bought them using the very generous amazon.com gift certificate I received. I explained the whole story to the class (as to where the $ came from) and they were extremely excited and thankful. It is great to be able to share a story of kindness being spread since in our classroom we try to do the same thing. My kids all wanted to send a BIG THANK YOU for their presents!
  7. Finally another Red Sox fan who doesn't put Clemens on a pedestal! I'm glad to see I'm not the only one!
  8. Listening to the audio of Mueller's homer still gives me chills to this day! I am saddened to hear of his departure..what a class act that guy is!
  9. As I've said to you before SFOC, you are such an amazing, caring, generous human being. What you have done here is beyond words. I thank you from the bottom of the heart for your generous gift. I can't begin to tell you what a difference it will make to my third graders! Thank you again, Christina
  10. Here's a piece from ESPN's Page 2 by Jim Caple...I think this article puts this whole ordeal in perspective, come on folks it's just one guy leaving (well, for now at least!). Yeah, I liked the guy, but it truly is NOT the end of the world. The entire article can be read at: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=caple/051104
  11. Ok SFOC, you've twisted my arm! It's really hard for me to think of something I want. I try my hardest to help others (like you have done yourself), and in turn that makes me feel like the luckiest gal around! I truly feel blessed in my life...a wonderful job (teaching 20 third graders each day and seeing the excitement when they finally learn how to do something they've been working so hard on is a pure joy), a beautiful baby, fabulous husband, and the best parents any girl could ask for. At this point in time the only thing that's missing is our new home (and I am far from being greedy enough to put up a link to the home I want! hahaha!) So, I'll throw out something that would make a difference this holiday season, a bit of a challenge maybe...first of all, it would be for everyone who reads this to do ONE thing this season to help out someone else. Donate old clothes to the needy, support food drives, put some spare change in the Salvation Army kettles, volunteer your time at a children's hospital or food kitchen. Don't say you don't have the time or money because that is BS. I would love to be able to do something truly memorable for my students this year. Whether that be purchase them books that they will always have (you'd be amazed at how many kids don't have books at home), bring an author or great speaker to them, or take them on a field trip they will always remember. I'm not trying to tug at any heart strings, just being the honest soul I am. Thanks SFOC for being a great role model to the kids around here. You are showing them (and hopefully it will rub off!) what a kind spirit does in this world.
  12. Welcome to the site fellow Mainer! Hope you're not washed out with all this rain we're having!
  13. My prayers are with you SFOC...stay strong, be positive, surround yourself with those who love you most.
  14. Welcome! I took a peek at your website, and I must say that your book looks GREAT! I'm always looking for new alphabet books for my classroom, and this one looks like it needs to join my collection! (it's always nice when I can buy a book for my classroom that's really my own guilty pleasure!) Again, welcome!
  15. If you think the fans give him far more credit, how about the great Curt Schilling who during an interview last year said that Kapler "is one of the most underrated players on the team!"? I think Gabe deserves all the credit he gets and I'm sad to see him out of the lineup.
  16. I would have to disagree with you on this one. First let me say that I LOVE what I do and the only reason I have stayed a teacher for the past 7 years is because of the kids, definitely it's not to be a millionaire. I would never picket either, because the kids are my work force. However teachers make nowhere near what they should. A daycare provider in my area (Central Maine) gets paid $125 per kid with anywhere from 10-15 kids (do the math!)....I would LOVE to get that much per kid in my classroom of 20! And I do WAY more than babysit. A starting teacher in this area gets $25,000-$27,000. That's for a job that is not 9-5, you take the work home with you, get calls from parents at 9:00 at night, stay late for staff meetings, curriculum meetings, graduate courses, etc. Not to mention the almost $300 worth of college bills per month (at least that's what I have for 10 years). It's a good thing that teachers LOVE what they do, who else in their right mind would apply under these conditions? Now I'm sounding like one of those lunatic teachers, so I'll stop now! It's just not a point I could stay quiet on!
  17. I completely agree...my point to BigPapiEnFuego was that I found it hard to believe that his teacher was "stupid". I know many people, my father being one of them, who never went to college and who I would easily say are smarter than me (and I am someone who has a 4 year college degree and I'm working towards a master)! I just detest the way young kids throw around the word "stupid" without truly thinking of what it means.
  18. I find it hard to believe that someone who graduated from college could be labeled "stupid". Maybe they don't know everything, but stupid is quite a harsh word to use. Teachers DON'T get paid enough, but this isn't something that your teachers should be complaining about to you. We are definitely underpaid and overworked, and the stress gets to some earlier than others. If you don't get anything out of a class, you can't put all of the blame on the teacher though. You need to take responsibility for your own learning too! If any person, no matter if they are a teacher or a student or the man on the street corner, says they haven't learned one new thing each day then they haven't tried. I'll give you the fact that there are some terrible teachers out there who don't do their job the way they should, but I would urge you to take responsibility and actions in your own hand and do something about it. In a Proactive way, not the typical teenage "I don't care about this, I hate school, I'm not going to do jack in this class" way!
  19. As a teacher myself I take offense to this. I'm not sure where you go to school, but in my school the teachers are AMAZING, care for the kids like they were their own, and love what they do. Usually the problem stems from home, not a lot of support...therefor the kids cannot succeed. I'm sorry to hear that your teachers are horrible. I do wonder, though, what constitutes them as "horrible" in your mind.
  20. Welcome aboard fellow Mainer!
  21. pardon me for replying to redsoxlover24...I was in a hurry and only had a chance to quickly glance at the postings...didn't think it was a crime to reiterate a point. :dunno:
  22. It looks as though we will! This was posted on the Red Sox site: "The Red Sox face a 30-game test of endurance after Commissioner Bud Selig ruled that the rained-out game of Aug. 14 between Boston and the White Sox will be made up on Sept. 5 at Fenway Park. Fans holding tickets for the postponed game should use their ticket stubs for admission to the Labor Day contest. No start time has been announced."
  23. The only thing that sucks, though, is that people like me who sat through the blistering heat and two rain delays won't get to see the Sox play. I'd really like to see at least one game this season!
