  4. As a teacher (a female one at that) I have a few things to respond to...first of all, until you have worked with young children (I work in an elementary school) and have seen what a kid who REALLY does suffer from ADD/ADHD is like on and off medication you will never grasp the realm of what goes on with these little ones in their day to day life. Two, I think it is definitely something that is highly overdiagnosed. Gosh, if you saw the test these kids had to go through you would be diagnosed as ADD/ADHD as well. But, there are a % of children and adults who truly suffer and need some sort of medication, change in diet, etc. And third, I'd like to know who your uncle works with when he says that it is mostly women who can't deal with behavior issues. The majority of woman I have worked with do a superb job with classroom management (and I, myself, get the large % of "behavior issues" because I have always done so well with these children and they respond well to me). It may not be that your uncle doesn't have issues with these kids because he's a man, it could be a personality conflict or that he is someone who lets a lot of things slide. Many possibilities. I can count on one hand the number of students I have truly thought are ADD/ADHD in my 7 years of teaching. You can't just send them to the nurse and get some sort of quick fix, there is quite the behavioral screening process and paperwork, testing, etc. that needs to be done. A bit long winded I know, but something I had to get off my chest....
  5. Maybe I read the article wrong, but I didn't see any comment from ESPN indicating his comment was insensitive.
  6. Nope...our teacher's room consists of two tables with chairs and a small kitchen. The teacher's rooms they show on tv are quite unrealistic!
  7. I miss my old classroom...I was able to turn the tv on and watch the games between classes! I have my "lucky" Sox jersey on today and the other teachers keep asking "Why do you have that on?" HELLO! Do you realize it's opening day?

  10. I don't think it was a matter of people being or not being responsible, life happens and we can't always control what goes on. I felt I was responsible in saying which particular dates I could not go, unfortunately I just happened to be chosen for the one date I could not go. Normally I wouldn't feel guilty calling in "sick", but on the first day of school for a teacher not to show up would look pretty bad (especially considering that I was starting at a new school!). SFOC, whatever you decide to do (or not do) for a contest will be more than generous I'm sure...and definitely brighten someone's day!

  13. http://www.theonion.com/content/node/46188 Here's a recent article from "The Onion". The picture is a classic and the article had me in stitches:lol:
  14. Call me an old fashioned gal, but I prefer a chair and hot dog when I watch a ball game...the bells and whistles of these new stadiums just don't do it for me. All the history and character are wiped away.

  16. With as much work as that man has done for the organization over the years, he deserved one!
  17. Thanks for the memories Pokey! It's nice to see that he's following his heart...too many of us in this world get caught in a rut with our jobs and lose sight of what is important in life.
  18. As someone who has lived with a stroke victim I can't believe anyone would say that Kirby "got what's coming to him". Do you know Kirby personally? Do you know what his day to day life is like? What irks me is that society judges others, especially those in the spotlight who we truly know NOTHING about (except from what the media portrays).
  19. http://msnbc.msn.com/id/11684341/ AP just reported that the Marlins terminated Pokey's contract today.
  20. Seattle Mariners at Red Sox...when damn Randy Johnson hit Mike Greenwell with a pitch(on the Gator's birthday no less!) I will never forget the sound of the ball hitting Mike's helmet (or the sound of the ground gasping). As a 15 year old girl at her first Sox game, I was devastated that my favorite player was pulled out of the game (I believe a few tears fell that day!) Luckily the Sox were able to pull off a 7-6 win!
