  1. do you get my point though? we have 7 extremely capable hitters in our best lineup
  2. I ask this: what the hell is wrong with the following lineup? (aside from maybe Ellsbury at the top) Ellsbury Pedroia Ortiz Youkilis Bay Lowell Drew Lowrie Varitek I see an unrelenting lineup that can string together hits with the best of 'em with Pedroia, Ortiz, Youkilis, Bay, Lowell and Drew able to pop out a homer on a regular basis Does anyone really realize how lucky we were to see Ortiz and Manny hitting 3-4 in the prime of their careers and how rare it is to see such a powerful 3-4 combo not matter which era you look at?
  3. 5.14 career ERA vs. the Yankees and a 6.48 ERA against that team this season. That's why, on paper, it was a bad pitching matchup last night going into the game I dont think anyone can argue that, on the whole, Wakefield has been fantastic this year
  4. oh, I agree 100%. I'm just talking about judging from the standpoint of trying to figure out what Sumoza will become. I don't even consider players to be a prospect until they hit Double A ball. To me, the rest are just young baseball players under contract to the Red Sox.
  5. going into the game, the pitching matchup definitely wasnt in our favor but to say we were fortunate to win yesterday isn't accurate. the team definitely brought their "A" game to the stadium yesterday
  6. can anyone really determine whether this deal is good for both sides or not already? you know what you're getting with Kotsay but how the hell do you know what you're gonna get from a 19-year old kid playing in low-A ball? the deal is what it is. wait 6-7 years to see how this kid pans out before judging the deal
  7. The guy we gave up is 19-year old outfielder Luis Sumoza (formerly) of the Lowell Spinners
  8. chase Ponson early and have Byrd give us 7 innings of 3 run ball
  9. http://photos-a.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v338/250/44/508282078/n508282078_1275016_3422.jpg yea...I was THAT close to her
  10. id like to thank the Sox for laying a f***ing egg for the first game I see live in 2 years. not to mention it was sandwiched between two great games
  11. Would the Mets be there if they had traded Reyes and Wright a few years ago for whatever hot shot pitcher was available at the time? And would they have even needed to go out and get Santana if they kept Kazmir instead of dealing him for Victor Zambrano? Would the Sox had won last year if they dealt away Papelbon, Lester, Pedroia and Youkilis? It's all about how an organization evaluates the talent in their farm system and decides which ones to trade and which ones to hold onto. Pavano and Armas for Petey was pretty good. Meredith and Bard for Mirabelli wasn't so good. Hanley and Anibal for Beckett and Lowell was good. Murphy, Gabbard and Beltre for Gagne wasn't so good.
  12. I wonder if Pavano ever would've made this first start back at Yankee Stadium
  13. is this a debate about trading prospects for a supposed "sure thing" or signing free agents for big money long-term deals? personally, I think Cashman is still gun-shy after the 2005 debacle of Johnson, Pavano & Wright
  14. you obviously want a good player with a huge contract but the more Pedroias, Papelbons, Lesters, Youkilis' and Lowries a team has, the more huge contracts they can dish out But its never about dishing out a huge contract just cause they can, the more money a free agent will demand, the more things a team has to take into account. Sabathia will get a huge deal, but there are concerns about him in the playoffs and the amount of innings he's pitched in recent years Sheets will get a huge deal, but there are concerns about his ability to stay healthy. Same with Harden A team that will spend huge money on a guy who will flame out is financially handcuffed for years to come, only the Yankees and to a lesser extent, the Red Sox can reasonably eat some of that money.
  15. The idea of every team in baseball is to get the best team possible using as little money as possible and to do that, you need good players who are cost-controlled for several years. This is the primary reason Kevin Youkilis wasn't traded for Mark Teixeira. Granted, we often talk like the money an organization spends is our own money but Sox fans realize by now about how much the current ownership is willing to spend on the team's payroll so we get a bit upset when we see money wasted on long-term deals for big money when the guy most likely won't work out for the duration of the deal. In the end, the idea is to get a good player with a small contract.
  16. in each season of Tito managing the Sox, no more than a handful of guys have played over 140 games so while I agree with you that the team is taking preventative measures with Drew, that is also the case for the general majority of the team bottom line is, I think you can criticize Drew for a lot during his stint with the Sox so far, but not his ability to stay on the field
  17. well, they arent. he's supposed to be back tonight
  18. happy birthday, Yaz
  19. Morneau is the most underrated player in baseball, Minny will keep him
  20. Varitek calls pitches and spots. Varitek is known to be pretty damn good at that but in the end, its up to the pitcher to hit that spot
  21. wow, nice lineup for the Triple A Yankees out right now
