There's a wide area of value to place on Jason Bay between Manny-esque and a scrub hitter. Jason Bay is definitely one of the better hitters in baseball and a clear middle of the order bat

Right but you have to understand that it's not very reasonable to expect the FO to put together offenses that rival the 03 and 04 teams and seeing as they can't, they've improved the club in other areas (ie. defense and pitching) to compensate for that. You can't control the other teams in the division getting better, you can only control the team you put out there and it was pretty unanimous before the season started that the FO has put together a damn good team.

They tried to fix it. They tried to get Montero but the DBacks wanted Bowden. That's why Varitek was signed at the 11th hour. There's probably more of a premium on catching talent than there is pitching these days so unless you're cultivating your own catching talent, you're pretty much f***ed.

You can't account for that lost production. Ortiz put up those numbers on offenses that rank among the greatest in recent history. You make up for the lost production by having improved pitching, which they do.

From 2003-2007, he averaged .301/.400 with 42 HRs and 128 RBIs. I dont think anyone can reasonably expect those numbers again after two significant injuries and losing Manny behind him. But he doesn't need to reproduce those numbers to be effective
