  1. Marlon/Marlin mojo: http://www3.telus.net/textures/images/brando_apoc.jpg Horror is a weapon. I remember a time when I was with Special Forces. We went into the small Japanese village to inoculate the children for Polio. We gave them shots in their right arms, but not this one kid. He refused. He said his arm was special, and he showed us. He took a ball and he threw it...threw right through a mortar building. He took another and threw with a corkscrew motion like a pig's tail. The weight of the moment hit me, like a ton of bricks. I cried...I..I...wept like some grandmother. And then I realized, like I was shot....like I was shot with a diamond bullet.....right through my forehead. The brilliance. The brilliance of this arm. I knew right away he would grow up to pitch in the Major Leagues, and I thought of what would happen to the hitters....The Horror.....The Horror...... Dice-Man Cometh!!!!
  2. Is every Varitek AB in a big spot going to fill me with this much dread?
  3. I'm not watching, but I am following on Gameday, so I don't know how he looks, but Beckett seems wild thus far.
  4. Marlin, Marlon....close enough. http://media.urbandictionary.com/image/large/godfather-35088.jpg I ask you, Godfather, on the day of your daughter's wedding, for a victory for the Sox over the Royals, and may your daughter's first child be a masculine child. Capisce?
  5. I wouldn't call Jeter a big edge over Lugo. Each is strong where the other is weak. Jeter has a solid and accurate arm, but he's lacking in range. Lugo scampers to everything, but his arm is a blunder waiting to happen. You can see this in their THT ZR numbers. Jeter has a moderate, less than the difference between Abreu and Drew, edge there because he doesn't boot the ball, but he only averaged 27 OOZ plays the last 3 years. Lugo made 53, 70, and was on pace for 56 before getting traded last year. Eyechart is much better than Youkilis, but will he play every day? Unlikely. I'd call the comparison on the whole a wash.
  6. I agree to a degree. I overstated the impact of fan reaction. However, your notion that it is all about money doesn't really agree with your last paragraph. Boras is a smart dude, and despite current spending levels, I don't think there's a contract the market will bear that will go over what he'd make if he stayed and then hit the FA market, and I'm sure Boras knows this. But, there's probably one that will make it about equal, and all things being equal, I think he leaves.
  7. I agree with one notion shared here, the GG is pretty meaningless. Posada is a better defensive catcher than Varitek despite the GG. Same thing holds true with Abreu and Drew, though. THT's ZR last year Drew: .665 - 18 Out of Zone Abreu: .611 - 14 Out of Zone These figures are park adjusted. That said, it's far from a perfect stat, so I'd call it a wash. There's absolutely no way Abreu should be considered superior, though.
  8. You have to be joking? ARod, if he jumps ship, will be booed for life at the Stadium, no matter who he is playing for.
  9. And Boomer got booed at the Stadium. When you jump sides, even with a gap, that's to be expected. Still doesn't mean the fans "ran them out of town" like Gom said.
  10. Clemens, Boggs, and Pedro are horrible examples. We are talking about the fanbases here, not the front offices. The fans didn't run any of those guys out of town. They were revered, but their services weren't retained. If ARod leaves, it will be solely because of the fanbase. This isn't to say I think one fanbase is superior to the other. All fanbases are equally full of crap. What I take exception with is the idea that the fans treatment of ARod is some premeditated form of motivation. It's purely reactionary, which is fine, but don't piss on my leg and tell me it's raining.
  11. That's because it's a completely fabricated justification. If the crowd was inherently aware of his need for coddling, then they wouldn't boo, period. That would be counterproductive, and a mile deep fanbase wouldn't do anything to hurt their chances. No, there's no cogent mechanism at work here.
  12. Can't play the 1 or 2, Ok. Can't play the 4 or 5, Ok. Thing is, he has swing man written all over him. He's tall enough and quick enough to get up to cause problems down low. He's quick enough and long enough to be a meanace on the perimeter. He'll get stronger and he has the handle to play the 3.
  13. I agree. Brewer is one of the most complete players I've seen in a while. Whoever picks him up is going to get better in every phase of the game.
  14. Does it matter? If a SP has a bad day and goes 5 R in 4IP, or 8R in 4IP, you are still probably going to lose. Style points aren't awarded.
  15. They'll get a full year out of Shealy too. No, they won't be very good, but there's a big gap between very good and one of the worst. That is where they will end up.
  16. Chipping away. Let's see if they can stop Florida from answering.
  17. Florida has answered every threat, and then topped it with a mini-run. They are about to stretch the lead again.
  18. Case of Pabst says they won't be.
  19. Why would Sosa be the focus of your ire when someone with as much to hide is about to break the most hallowed record in American sports?
  20. Brewer is the difference maker to me. These teams would be pretty evenly matched if UF had a regular swing man, but Brewer can do anything on the court.
  21. Bomb. Oden is taking over on the other end.
  22. But Wright will hit for more BA, and OBP is a category. Like I said, it's a pretty even trade, but I give the nod the way I do because of Gordon being a closer.
