  1. There's another, albeit a bit crude, but maybe more accurate, way of phrasing this. Some might say you are fligging poop against the wall to see what sticks.
  2. Close enough that is was almost a done deal, however the Mariners favored Smoak. No, it's not the key word. Montero has reportedly been included as a name teams are asking for when dealing very good players to the Yankees over the past 2 years. I'm not against getting Bedard for the stretch run. When healthy, he's still a very effective player, but he hasn't been healthy for 3 consecutive years now. The acquistion cost needs to be knocked down to account for injury risk (even if it's only 3 months, that risk still exists for Bedard, meaning he's of no use for the stretch run he was acquired for) and his status as a free agent. Even over a 3 month window, accounting for those things, Bedard falls well short of a Cliff Lee type pitcher.
  3. The same concerns exist for Montero, yet he was the centerpiece of a deal that almost got the Yankees Cliff Lee - the best pitcher in the AL last year. Using precedents, getting Bedard would be silly.
  4. If Lavarnway continues to crush AAA pitching and widens the gap between him and Montero, offensively, this year. He's a good bet to be a centerpiece for a star, like Montero has been recently. Using that kind of prospect value on a player like Bedard would be absolutely foolish.
  5. To be honest, you are the only person I've seen this comp from. Murphy never demonstrated Reddick's ability to make really good contact in the minors (~32% XBH rate and .407 SLG, compared to Reddick's ~40% and .500 SLG - not to mentioned Murphy was older at every level). This is a non-thread, and any comparison should have just been kept in the "What is Reddick" thread.
  6. This is a constant theme from you, the lack of conditioning leading to injuries thing. While it's absolutely true that poor conditioning can be a contributor to injury, it's not safe to come to a 100% conclusion it is like you've done here. There are many examples of players whose conditioning is suspect and never seem to get hurt, and there are even more examples of players with excellent conditioning that can't seem to stay on the field. Many injuries have nothing at all to do with conditioning. And, no, that doesn't explain the slow starts. I'm not there, but I'd be surprised if this year's ST was any different than any other year since Tito has been there, and this is the first year they started off slow. In fact, in recent years, the Sox have been quick out of the gate.
  7. This would be a great point if one of them actually amounted to something in the time the Rangers had them, but since none of them did, it doesn't make the thought of losing our minor league "depth" all that unappealing. Think it through next time.
  8. I agree that Beltran is the answer for now. The question is, do you give up Reddick's future for Beltran now? With Kalish in the wings, and salary coming off the books (to resign Beltran if needed), I think you do.
  9. Wait, is he behind other catchers or on pace? In one post, he's on pace to become a "full package", whatever the f*** that subjective designator means, catcher in his 30's like everyone else. Now he's behind? Do you even read what you are saying? Save us the mental diarrhea and put together a cogent, consistent point. It's like you are a "grass is always greener on my side of the fence" cliche generator.
  10. Easy, the Great and Formidable, The Jesus of Monteros, would never play at such a level if he actually cared.
  11. Given the injury, how do you even begin to rate this season? He played a dozen games then got hurt. Based on what I've seen (when he was up last year) and their MiLB performance, I'd lean toward Kalish as the better player.
  12. 30 or so? That's a bit much. That puts him on the downside of his prime. If he's not ready to catch until he's 30 or so, then they should give up on the idea of him as a catcher. Fortunately, for him and the Sox, I don't think this is the case. I think he'll be ready to start catching for the Sox as early as next year, and that may be what we see.
  13. I'm kind of on the fence about this one. With the Mets offering to kick in the $6M remaining on Beltran's contract, and teams balking at that offer preferring to take on the contract and give up little to no talent, the bottom line becomes.... Would you pay $6M to keep a Josh Reddick, Ryan Kalish, Anthony Ranaudo in your system? From a bonus perspective, I don't think those guys combined to make $6M, but there's more to it than that. They've earned some stripes working their way through the minors. There's a higher level of confidence about their ability to play at the highest level. And, there's the value they provide by being able to play at the highest level in lieu of pricey free agents. So, change the rules, suppose the Sox drafted them now, knowing what we know now about their play, do you sign any (all three) of them to a $6M signing bonus? That's the question. I think you do, which makes the negotiations all that much more difficult.
  14. For the Bill James "relief ace" to appear, it will require a change over from one generation to the next in managers. I don't think Bard (or Robertson for the Yankees, who is having an even better year) will drive the paradigm shift. You need to change the decision makers.
  15. I know what he's trying to do, and it's stupid, so I'm letting him know it is.
  16. You know, if you wear gloves, it will protect your knuckles from damage when they constantly drag on the ground.
  17. This is bologna. An above average offensive catcher is effective.
  18. I know Fenway's dimensions and HR park factor tendencies. They aren't as bad as Petco, and the AL East road parks aren't as bad as the NL West. His power has been below expectation to date.
  19. No, but they way it has happened is how I would have guessed if told it would. While it's nice that Ellsbury is finding extra power, I think Gonzo's power production has been a bit of a let down to date.
