  1. What's the standard? Don't mean to be obfuscating my answer, but as this argument has shown, everyone tends to have their own interpretation. Using mine, I think he falls just short, but mine is tough. I'd say there are only a handful in the whole league. Santana, Halladay, Webb, maybe Oswalt before last year, with Lincecum and Hamels a year or two away (ie do it again) from joining the group.
  2. I think Calzone Crusher Sabathia deserves some blame for his playoff performance over the past couple of years. He got worked over by three different patient lineups. This is something that appears to be an issue for him in October. He's walked 17 in 19 IP. And it's not like it's one bad start blowing up the stats for the rest. He's walked 4 or more in 3 of his 4 postseason starts the last two years. Looking at his gamelog from the last two years, he's only done that 2 times over 69 starts. I think there's some sphincter pressure going on. What that means in terms of "ace", I don't know. Ask the leprehcaun what he thinks. But, there may be some legitimacy to CC playing tight in the big game.
  3. Dude, nice aviator, what do you think of mine? http://www.kennedyorangebowlcar.com/images/charles_lindberg_plane.jpg
  4. You are woefully missing the point. Every team that did not sign Nomar, Pedro, and Pavano, regardless of what the magnitude of their budget for said player was, every team that missed out, turned out to have had good fortune there. The Red Sox fall in that group, so yes, it is the same as saying Theo was lucky. It also recognizes that all other non-signing participants were lucky too.
  5. Swing and a miss. Can't read either, huh?
  6. In the two full years prior to going the the NL, CC's swing-contact rate was about the same as Burnett's was this year, and Burnett lead the AL.
  7. True, but that doesn't make it the same park. New YS won't be exactly the same, particularly not in the OF, and that will impact the batter's eye. This is why some track K and BB park factors as well. It may turn out that new YS is more friendly to hitters in a lefty-lefty matchup due to batter's seeing the ball better there and the same short dimensions in RF. EDIT: By different in the OF, I'm referring to beyond the fences, obviously.
  8. All of those players are good players that were desirable to more than just the Sox at the time of their signings, yet they only ended up on one team. Every team interested in those players was every bit as lucky as the Red Sox. Was there some good fortune involved? Yeah, but not for one team only. If the standard is that a recognition of undervalued talent, such as Ortiz, constitutes luck, then, again, the title "lucky" isn't exclusive to Theo Epstein. Nice attempt to dodge my point. Whether or not it can but understood through the capability of the human mind is not relevant to what I said. It is your opinion that basic understanding is the only criteria that need be met. I, and many others here including the moderating team, prefer a bit more.
  9. Fangraphs ... which is quickly becoming the best source of free baseball data on the internet.
  10. I'll bite, why is he the luckiest? Grammar and spelling are the presentation of your thought in this medium. If you aren't serious about presenting it properly, why should we be serious about what it says?
  11. Yeah, Steve Smith and Dallas Clark did me in. If there's normal to moderately better performance from them, I'd still have a shot going into tonight's game, but that didn't happen. They both blew up.

  14. What is their MO? When they seriously target a guy, they make serious offers. Look at Drew and Matsuzaka. Admit it, you don't have a clue what their MO is. As such, you can stop your little mental masturbatory effort to make people think they won't get him, because that's what's clearly going on here. He definitely getting more than 6/150, so everyone knows that won't seal the deal, which is why you put it out there.
  15. Particularly if they get Milton Bradley. They've already upgraded RF by acquiring Joyce from Detroit for Edwin Jackson. Joyce can do everything better than Gabe Gross. Bradley will boost their production at DH and give them some OF depth. The loss of Jackson is irrelevant since Price is ready to take a rotation spot, and they've got other arms should Sonnanstine's pixie dust wears off (book it) or Kazmir spends some time on the shelf (likely). Where I expect them to have a rough go of it is in their BP. I'll be shocked if they end up getting the same performance from that crew. Individual BP performance has a lot of variance from year to year. Everyone was "on" last year. They'll need continued good fortune to be as good as they were in '08.
  16. Why is Pedroia's peak at 24 when most players peak from 27-31? 'Cause you says so. Not buying. He's got ridiculous hand/eye coordination. He hit .326 this year, but the arbitrary .340 is out of the question? Over the course of 650 ABs that's only 9 more hits. Can't happen, right? Nonsense. Can he hit 25 HRs? Yeah, playing half his games at Fenway. Unless he gets lazy in the offseason, something that is sure to happen given the dividends his offseason program have paid thus far, he's going to get stronger as he approaches his peak. He had 10 road HRs as a 24 y/o. Consider that his park neutral power. Combine that with increased strength and a good season taking advantage of the home dimensions, and it's certainly possible.
  17. I could go into a Rip Van Winkle type sleep and not need to look out the window nor at the calendar to know what month it is. I can figure that out solely by the tenor of Jacko's posts. "Oh, I see he's telling us how much better the Yankees are. Must be mid-December after some headline grabbing FA acquisition. Time to go Christmas shopping." Kennedy is tearing up the DWL? Stop, you had me at "Hello".
  18. Since Houston, this has been the case year in year out after the conclusion of the short deals he signs. Yet, when you were giddy with the thought of draft picks two months ago, you counted him in the camp of people you were going to get draft compensation from. This is why you are so hard to take seriously. Once you get something in your mind, you run with it in the face of all reasonable thought.
