  1. OK, tie score. Late innings. What could go wrong? hahaha..
  2. Another blown chance.
  3. Dave Winfield is in the booth on TBS. He's got some interesting things to say about baseball, Nomar, etc.
  4. That's a great chart. Thanks.
  5. Right on. Bring on the Pokey Era, please. Let the young ones getting into baseball for the first time remember The Pokey Years.
  6. Has this been discussed here? I, along with most of humanity, think Bonds has "partaken" in 'roids over the course of his career. Just one look at how his body proves it to me. I lived in SF for years in the 90s and watched him play. He is not the same guy now, and I don't think weight lifting contributed to his growth. Hell, his HEAD is twice as large as it was then. Alright, fast-foward to this year. One would think that is he took 'roids then, he'd back off now because of the scrutiny. But he has had a great season so far. There doesn't seem to be a drop-off in performance. That either means: A. He's still on steriods (he's totally corrupt). B. He stopped the 'roids (he never needed them in the first place) C. He stopped the 'roids (but there is a carryover effect that can keep him hyped up over a period of at least a year) D. He never took 'roids (and he's been framed). A little help here?
  7. I guess I am old-fashioned. But I beleive when you make millions of dollars playing a game, you better get your ass on the field, play the game well, treat your teammates, manager, the press, and the fans with MORE than a modicum of respect, and, above all, keep your talents going into September/October. But hey, that's just my humble opinion.
  8. I did suck, bro. I listed to the game on WCBS (Yankees radio) beacuse it's all I can get down here. That made it suck even more. I think all in all the team balances it out in talent from last year to this year. But the defenisve errors are more and that is KILLING THEM. Pokey's the man. We'll see. There is still half a season to go.
  9. Folks - This is essentially the same team that trashed the Yankees just 3 months ago. There are problems - signficant ones that I have posted on before - but all is not lost. To be a Red Sox fan is to be a real fan, to understand the ebbs and flows of arbitrariness of a spite-filled God, that gives you hope one moment, and takes it away the next. Yes, now the race looks to the Wild Card. The starting and relief pitching is still good, the slugging (except, I know, in situations when it counts) is solid. The talent is there. But a shake-up is needed. Francona's days are numbered. This team plays like it is not afraid of losing right now, and that is a management problem. Keep the faith!
  10. Wow - that was an emotional thread. I understand why. I had a sick feeling throughout the game, especailly when Ortiz fanned with such a great opportunity. Ortiz's rror at first to me looked even WORSE that the famed Buckner screw up. He just kinda crumpled on the ground. But hey, he is still a stud and brings in the runs on a regualr basis. ESPN's coverage didn't help either. Berman's side-kick essentially calling a Yankees win even when it was 2-0. That troubled me. What troubled me more is he was right! People need to calm down. There is still half the season to go. Wake was great. Nomar isn't and shouldn't go anywhere (this year). The Sox have a potential serious problem if Williamson is out for any length of time. But as soon as they get to back to Fenway, Terry needs to double the fielding practice and start thinking small ball. Look what Jeter did to advance a runner to third last night. A big stick bunts. In the end, poor defense and always looking for the homer is what is killing this team.
  11. Hey that's funny about Dave / Jean Stapleton. We used to TRY to get Ch 38 (was that Hartford?) on our TV but we never really got good reception. Now I try to get Red Sox games on the radio on WTIC Hartford but the reception is not very good - I live south of Washington DC now. The internet and ESPN helps a lot.
  12. I been Red Sox fan since 1975. Although I grew up in Southwestern Connecticut (Yankee territory) my father was / is a huge Red Sox fan so of course I became one too. I am 42 years old. The first team I remember had Rice, Lynn and Evans in the OF. Incredible. You never forget your first love, or your first team. Actually, Red Sox games weren’t televised in that part of New England then so I had to make do with watching them when they played New York. My other team was the Mets , who were televised more frequently. I’ve been to Fenway only once - in 78 or 79. But I have followed the team most of the time since those days. Since the 1978 season, I was never quite the same: twitching, Tourette’s syndrome and recurring headaches, especially during Yankee / Red Sox match-ups. I don’t hate anything, but I loathe the Yankees.
  13. I work down here in DC so definately yes from me. The other cities really don't compare in my view. My only fear is they will do something dumb like locate out near Dulles Airport in Virginia instead of in the City where they really belong. What do other people think? Does anyone outside of Montreal and DC care where the Expos go?
  14. derekn - I'm with you. I have been a fan since the mid 70s. I have sufferred greatly. The searing experience of my life was 1978. I have been jittery ever since. I haven't seen a doctor about it but I get cranky often for no apparent reason and I blame that year. One wonders why I go on. Can't I do something else, like stamp collecting or tomato-growing? I know a lot o f folks dislike Grady but I will tell you he's looking pretty good to me now. I never thought firing him was the answer anyway, although there was an irresistable blood lust in the air after last year's disaster. I'm new too. I've read the posts for weeks but decided to put my two centts worth in today.
  15. No, they aren't stealing with the guys they have. On the other hand, it seems a lot of the games lately have been lopsided one way or the other, so stealing in those cases probably wouldn't have done anything. My point though is that there's electrical charge missing from the team's play right now, and some scapping for every possible run from the VERY FIRST INNING ON should get some zap back. I don't know: this looks like the 70s all over again to me.
  16. I am down here in Virginia so I can't see all the games. But I watch what is televised nationally. This team has talent out the wazoo but something has gone terribly wrong. I suspected the big April against the Yankees was a fluke and it certainly appears to be. They don't seem HUNGRY. One things I am wondering - they aren't manufacturing runs, and do they need to get a good base stealer? Damon is OK but why isn't Tito getting faster guys on the team to steal bases? I know the Billy James School says base stealing isn't worth it but there is an intangible here: base stealing and good hit and runs show guts, and guts percolate throughout the team psychologically. And I just don't see that kind of guts on this team. They won't make it on the swings of Ortiz and Manny. What do you think?
