Terrible. Johnson has an injured riddle career.

Josh Johnson needs to be a target this offseason.

When healthy, he is a true ace. The only available players that can have the same said of them are Greinke, Peavy, Lincecum, and Cliff Lee.

Unless the Red Sox want to trade Bogaertz, Barnes, Bradley, and Middlebrooks all together for Felix, the only way they will get a true ace is by finding the gem in that group. They absolutely need to do their homework and figure out if his injuries are chronic or unlucky but they definitely need to look into him.

Johnson is due to make $13M and becomes a FA.

If you trade Ellsbury and Doubront, it has to be for a younger starter who is under control. I wouldn't trade Doubront straight up for Johnson.

Considering how little Doubront has proved, that's an odd position to take.

Johnson will get dealt this off-season. Whomever trades for him will want to secure an extension before he moves. In doing so, the sox would need to secure him for Lackey money for more yrs. If you don't sign him and he dominates, then you're gonna have to fight against 29 other teams to sign him in the off-season. If you do the deal, and sign him or no, he has an injury filled season, was the price worth it?

Johnson is a roll of the dice. He could very easily get hurt, and cost a solid prospect, and a lot of money. But he's also a 28 year old who could be an ace. The Red Sox need to do their homework on his health, and see what he is going to cost. If they could get them for Doubront and Britton, absolutely pull the trigger, and don't sign him. Worst case scenario you get a first rounder, but he may sign back here anyway.

Stephen Drew's option was declined today.

Seems like a perfect fit for the Sox on a 1 year pillow contract. If all goes well, Bogaerts could be starting SS in 2014.

I'd be very surprised if Drew didn't go to the Sox this offseason. He could well be a .285/.345/.460 hitter at Fenway and in the AL East

He also makes Iglesias expendable this offseason. Obviously he's not going to be the centerpiece in a deal, but he could well be a very good complimentary piece.

Considering whats available I agree that Drew would be the best fit for this team and from what I've seen him play he's a pretty good defender

Drew can play well like he did when he was 24. Napoli and Hunter will make Sox fan's smile over a hotdog

Ellsbury will be traded possibly if they sign Drew

That doesn't make Drew suddenly an MVP caliber player, not by any means first off, and I don't see the connection with Stephen Drew and Jacoby Ellsbury. Drew = SS. Ellsbury = CF.

We'll see what Cherington does. The ball is in his court--unless Henry wants to play GM again. He has a lot on his plate, and I expect a fair amount of money to spend. Let's see if he can do a better job than his former boss, Epstein.

What were the lessons from this years playoffs and world series? Pitching and defense wins championships. Signing Ortiz would be nice but it isn't crucial. The Sox still need starting pitching, a good defensive catcher, a decent 1st baseman, a shortstop with range with some pop in his bat and a closer. If I were Ben (Larry) I wouldn't waste too much time or energy on Ortiz. Make him a reasonable offer and move on. There are too many other things which need to be done.

That is always important. Let's not all of a sudden throw offense under the bus, either. Pitching and defense are very important, but I think we need to sign Ortiz. I think it is crucial. When healthy last year, he was by far our best and most consistent offensive weapon. We can still resign Big Papi and look to improve at C, 1B, SS, and pitching. I agree with you about not wasting too much time resigning Big Papi, but that can be done with still being able to resign him. He has clearly stated he wants to come back to Boston. There is mutual interest. A deal is on the horizon. I think it is important to resign Big Papi and Ross as soon as possible so we can solely focus our attention on pitching primarily, and C, 1B, and SS secondly.

What does everyone think about Andre Ethier? The Dodgers are interested in shopping him. I do not know what they are going to ask in return. Ethier cannot hit lefties, so that might make him a platoon player. He is owed 85 million over the next five years. If he is going to be a platoon player, then that is a lot of money for a platoon player. He is also a friend of Pedroia's, but that is really no reason to have interest in him. If we go after Ethier, the Dodgers will need to eat a lot of his salary, and I am not willing to give up good prospects. I am probably a no on Ethier, unless we can somehow get a steal out of it.

I don't want to disagree too much but the truth is the Sox can find a servicable DH fairly easily for a lot less money than Ortiz wants. Putting sentiment aside, (which is what this is all about) the Sox need to move on from Ortiz very quickly and not get bogged down with his Big Diva act. Make him and offer. If he refuses then move on quickly.

I completely understand and respect your opinion. Let me say that I do not completely disagree with you. I know where you are coming from. There is a part of me that wants to move on from Ortiz, but I just think the offense would take a huge hit without him. I guess this is just a matter of opinion. I completely agree with you about making him an offer and if he refuses, then move on. We cannot do anything if he does not like the contract offer that we give him. Odds are he settles in Boston because he does not like the other offers he gets on the open market. Then again, I could be wrong because someone might be willing to overpay him. I think we would be fine with no specific one player as DH as well. If we can sign or trade for some decent offensive weapons, we could do a DH by committee. Give a player a day off from the field by letting him DH. That would not be a bad option. Also, we could get a decent DH to replace him if need be. We would probably not get a player with as much power, but I think we could find a cheaper alternative to man the position.

For what it's worth, the Tigers do not plan on pursuing Young or Valverde. I do not really see the Red Sox pursuing either. The only way I see us pursuing Young is as a DH who might get a little action in the OF, only if we do not resign David Ortiz. I think Valverde is on the decline after his performance in the postseason. I don't really see us pursuing Valverde, unless we look to sign him as reliever and not a closer. Odds are someone will look to sign him as a closer. They are looking to sign Anibal Sanchez, but there is going to be a big market for him this offseason. I expect nothing less than the Red Sox at least attempting to sign him.

No thanks to Drew....

I had enough of that family already.

Drew will command a contract in which he does no deserve since he is not competing against anybody else on the market.

Just sign Alex Gonzalez. Neither are stars offensively, and Gonzalez has already proven to be at a minimum...... adequate offensively in Boston. We already know what we got with his glove.

Haren to Cubs...Anahiem is on my sh*t list... Time to load the lineup with bats 1-9 and not worry about the pitching staff b/c we have a coach that can fix the starting rotation that hasn't changed personel and hasn't change repertoire. Yeahhhhh!
