I don't have much confidence in Cherington, based on the trades he's made so far. Small deals. Nickle and dime stuff. He blew the Reddick deal. Also the Youks giveway--listening to the media instead of waiting until the trade deadline on Youks. And he paid no attention to Reddick's strong first half last year. Billy Beane did.

Ben is simply not a risk-type person. That's how I see him. In the big deals involving major players, he isn't going to hack it. You have to take chances in those deals. He likes to keep the cards in his hand.

How could you possibly think that he is a "risk-type person" based on his record? Didn't Cherrington pull the trigger on the Lowell/Beckett/Ramirez deal (the riskiest deal this current regime has made with the exception of Nomar deal)? Wouldn't the bailey trade be the definition of an incredibly risky deal (trading a prospect at a position of need for a often injured closer)? Wasn't it Cherrington's idea to convert a solid set-up man into a starter undertaking a considerable amount of risk? In my opinion the reason he hasn't made any big splashes yet isn't that he doesn't want to take risks but that he's basically been neutered by lucchino and the ownership into only making small moves.

Andrus is a marginally better hitter right now--.700 OPS--than Iggy, who still hasn't been given a good shot. He was primed in ST, then got a groin pull trying to steal home (??) and was never heard from again. I think it's silly to focus on a guy's hitting at SS-- a critical defensive position. Particularly a kid with upside. Look at Reddick. They blew that one.

Iggy is cheaper and probably better defensively. He is their most expensive SS right now, and they should get off the pot on him--though I like Ciriaco better than Aviles. Iggy should be on the roster in Sept, and they should give him some game time to see what he can do. He looked good enough in ST.

I really don't think people truly understand how bad iglesias is as a hitter. If iglesias would somehow be able to match his production from triple-A in the majors (doubtful) his .571 OPS would still the the worst average of any player that qualifies for the batting title. Calling Andrus a marginally better hitter then Iglesias (difference in OPS .189) would be like saying Joey Votto is a marginally better hitter than Melky Cabrera (difference in OPS .171) Giving Josh Reddick as an example is nonsense, he had an OPS of .841 last year in the minors. Iggy just simply isn't ready yet.

Biggest hole in OPS right there -- it can't properly measure the impact of speed.

This is not a superstar hitter, but he's also never been below about 1.6 offensive wins above replacement -- and that's setting aside his consistently stellar glove.

Iglesias on the other hand isn't really a worldbeater in the speed department -- he's competent, but not electrifying. And he'd need to be to justify anything like as bad as he hits.
