Who do you like more of Noesi, Warren and Phelps? I'm a Warren fan. Callis said on twitter the other day his ceiling is a #3 (which I think is too high) or a 7 inning reliever.

You're a fan of Warren but don't think his ceiling is a no 3? He's a middle of the rotation stater aka a no 3, IMO. He's not at the Banuelos/Betances level, but he also doesn't deserve to be grouped with Noesi, Nova, Phelps and DJ Mitchell in the backend of the roto group.

I think all 3 end up in the bigs. Warren throws the hardest of the bunch and I think he safely projects as a middle of the rotation starter. Warren has the most upside of the three, but they're all mid rotation prospects

Good interview with Newman. I know he's made defensive strides, even though the national pundits say otherwise. And it sounds like he could be a backup in name only, but get about 300ABs or more in the bigs this yr while learning from Martin and Posada. Wouldnt be the worst thing.

Excerpt

SICKELS: Let's talk about some specific players. Jesus Montero . Everyone wants to know if he can catch.

NEWMAN: I think he can. Jesus has made severe improvements with the glove. If you didn't know his name was "Jesus Montero," and just watched him play, you'd look and say his glove was fine. He has a good arm, he receives the ball well, sets a good target. He's really improved his mobility. A couple of years ago, he was not a good catcher, that's true, but he is much more flexible now. He's really worked hard at his technique. Julio Mosquera , our catching coordinator, has spent a lot of time with him. So yeah, I think Montero's going to be a good defender.

SICKELS: Even if he works out with the glove, could the demands of catching hurt his bat?

NEWMAN: I don't think it will hurt him. He's just a really, really good hitter. I don't think catching will impact that.

SICKELS: What about these reports that he is in contention for a backup job behind Russ Martin? Wouldn't that stall his development, to sit on the bench?

NEWMAN: Montero is in the competition.

SICKELS: Really?

NEWMAN: It depends on what you mean by backup. If he is a backup who plays once a week, then no, I don't think so. If he is a backup who can play 70 or 80 games, spend some time at DH and get enough at-bats to stay sharp, then yeah, I think that's a possibility, that could happen

With Cervelli out for up to 2 months, Montero is a lock to start the yr in the bigs. I also think that his improved receiving skills will make for a very interesting debate. If Martin or Posada start of slow, and Montero starts off hot, how long until the kid is in the lineup full time?

Minor league opening day yesterday...

David Phelps got hit hard, 5ER in 4IP.

Montero went 1 for 4.

Romine went 0 for 3 with 2 walks

Mesa went 2 for 5 with a double and an RBI

Brett Marshall for lit up, 6ER in 4IP

Shane Greene and Danny Burawa combined on a shutout

Gary Sanchez went 2 for 4 with a 2 run homer in his first game of long season.

Figured I would post about opening day. I typically do some updates on a weekly to biweekly basis

Posted

Through the first week (3 or 4 games)...

AAA

Montero- he's started out hot, hitting .400 with one homer

Noesi, Phelps, and Warren- not good in their first starts, combining for 9 walks, 6K's, 20 hits, and 10ER in 14IP.

The rest of the offense isnt really newsworthy. While Pena, Parraz and Golson are crushing the ball, none project more than Yankee backups

AA

Cody Johnson looks good thus far. He's a 22 yr old with 94 career MiLB HR's but a penchant for the K who we traded for in the offseason. He's got a TON of potential and looks good in 3 games. .417AVG with 2 doubles and 2 walks, but 3K's in 3 games is something to keep an eye on

Corban Joseph hitting .231, is the next highest batter, which is a trend for the Thunder. Mesa, Romine, Pirela, and Suttle (who are the only other notable offensive prospects in Trenton) are all under .200

In terms of pitching, Stoneburner only allowed 1ER in 5IP, but allowed 10 baserunners and only registered 1K.

Dellin Betances allowed 1ER in 4.2IP, but allowed 7 baserunners and only registered 1K.

Tim Norton, who is rebuilding his career after 2 major arm surgeries, has started off well in the pen, 5K's in 2IP with only one baserunner allowed

A+

Robert Lyerly has started off on fire. .353 with a double and a triple

Abraham Almonte, in his return from labrum surgery, has started out hot too. .333 with 2 doubles, a homer, and 3 steals. He's a 5 tool guy to keep an eye on. He'll be in Trenton before long

2 highly touted players who are struggling, Zoilo Almonte and Kyle Higashioka are 4 for 28 on the young season

In terms of the mound, Romanski started the yr off well, with a 6IP 3H 1ER performance

Sean Black also started out well, 5IP 5H 1ER 3K

Jose Ramirez also had a good peripheral performance with a bad defense hurting him a little. 4IP 2H, 2BB, 6K, 2ER

Mark Prior has thrown 2 scoreless in Tampa. He'll be moving to Scranton when the Yanks are happy with his arm strength

Brett Marshall had an abysmal start in the opener

A

Big fan of this team after they were a little too green last yr.

Slade Heathcott is 9 for 18 with 2 homers, 4 doubles, a triple and 7RBI. He'll move to Tampa once Almonte moves to Trenton

Kelvin DeLeon is starting out hot. .375 with a homer, but also 4K's. That's been his problem and if he continues to K at an epic rate, he'll fizzle

Another interesting line is that of JR Murphy. 2nd rounder from 2009, he's smacked 2 homers, but is only 3 for 17.

Segedin, Mojica, Sosa, Feliz, and Flores have all started out cold.

For the pitchers, 2 of the starts have been lights out, and 2 were terrible. Shane Greene threw 6IP with 0ER, 4H and 3K's.

Mikey O'Brien threw 6IP with 6K, 2ER, and 6 baserunners

Nik Turley and Kramer Sneed (both lefties) both got dismantled in their first starts

Tommy Kahnle threw 2 perfect innings in his debut

Posted

Montero went 3 for 5 and Jorge Vazquez hit 2 homers and drove in 5 today for Scranton

Banuelos threw 4 shutout innings vs Portland today, Romine had a double and 3 walks, and Mesa hit his first homer of the yr

Lyerly added a double and a homer today and Jairo Heredia took his first step towards progress with 6IP of 2ER ball, allowing only 3 baserunners and K'ing 7

Heathcott added a 2 run triple in a wild one at Greenville. Flores had 3 hits, Murphy had three hits including a double and his third homer in 4 games, and Kyle Roller added 4 hits.

Posted

Montero is literally s***ing on the baseball in triple A right now. He went 3 for 5 again today with an RBI. He's hitting .471 on the season.

Adam Warren threw a gem today. 6IP, 2ER, 5K's for a win.

Suttle, Romine, and Cody Johnson all went 2 for 5 today. That Johnson kid has been looking good thus far. Looks like the Yanks have shortened his swing a bit.

Mesa, Joseph and Pirela continue to struggle, all under .200.

Stoneburner threw a gem, 6IP, 1ER but only 2K's.

Zoilo Almonte broke out in a big way today, with a double and a homer. Jose Ramirez threw 4 innings, only 5 baserunners and 6K's, but the three walks and fact that he hit his pitch limit in 4 innings are a drawback

another hit and 2 runs for Heathcott today. He's hitting .378 on the young season

Posted

AAA

Phelps pitches well. 6IP 3H 2ER 1BB 6K

Montero 0 for 4 today, average down to .413

AA

Romine goes 2 for 3

Banuelos is back from his blister issues, throws 4IP, 2H 0ER, 2BB 4K

A+

only 4 hits and got shutout by Greinke et al.

Romanski pitched well, dodging a bunch of hits. 6IP 9H 1ER 2K

A

Flores 2 for 4

Otherwise, Ranaudo shut them down

But Mikey O'Brien was equal to the task. 6IP 3H 1ER 0BB 6K

Tommy Kahnle pitched well but got the loss. 3IP 2H 1ER 0BB 5K

Posted
Phelps pitches well. 6IP 3H 2ER 1BB 6K

That may not look like a good line, but he faced a good lineup that has a lot of ex major leaguers on there and really mowed them down. I was very impressed with his work.

Posted
Montero hot again. 2 for 2 tonight with his fourth double. BA up to .429. And Adam Warren has allowed 1 hit through 3IP. Also, Gary Sanchez is back from his oblique injury and is 1 for 1
Posted

Montero ended up 3 for 5 with a double.

Adam Warren threw 8 shutout innings, only 3K's but also only 6 baserunners. Keep an eye on him

Laird had 2 hits as well as a double, which might be good for him, as he's off to an awful start

Romine went OFF. 3 for 4, 2 homers, a walk and 4RBI. Great line on the yr thus far, .310/.420/.500

Corban Joseph went 2 for 4, starting to snap out of his funk.

Shaeffer Hall threw 7 scoreless innings, 3K, 5H, 0BB

In Tampa, Robert Lyerly continues to be the best player on the team, going 3 for 5 with a double, raising his AVG to .339. Higashioka and Murton with 2 hits apiece as well.

Jose Ramirez allowed 6ER in 6IP. That's the bad. All 6 came in the same inning, and he also K'd 6, walked only 1 and allowed 7 hits. Peripherals were excellent, one bad inning kills the line

In Charleston, Sanchez returned going 1 for 3 with a walk and 2 runs. Otherwise, 2 walks and a hit for Segedin, and a double in 4 trips for Flores. Kramer Sneed threw 5.2IP, allowing 2ER, 5H, 0BB and 7K

His ETA depends on how Posada hits. If he continues around the Mendoza line and Montero continues to just abuse pitching in the minors, then you could see the kid up as a DH/twice a week catcher. He fizzled at the end of the spring and the brass wanted to give him more time. But right now, Martin is playing great D and hitting very well, so Montero can stay in AAA
Posted
Montero 2 for 3 today. DJ Mitchell threw a 7IP gem today as well in a losing effort. And Kevin Millwood threw another solid performance in the minors

CC

AJ

Colon

Garcia

Millwood?!

haha, man thats brutal, but as long as they get the job done... meh

Ramon Flores is really showing up. He's a very speedy OFer, 19 yrs old with a good eye. He's now hit 2HRs on the year and has an OPS over .950 to start the yr

Also Heathcott had 2 more hits tonight and Kelvin De Leon smacked his third dinger as well

Posted
I love De Leon's raw power as well, but with 23K in 15 games, I am becoming more reluctant to believe he will become anything in the bigs. He is young, only 20, but if he continued to be Serrano up there, he cannot be a big leaguer. We need to ship a live chicken to Charleston pronto
