Baseball Field

Boston President Larry Lucchino is currently in La Habana, and he seems very interested in signing local ballplayers , as reported by several baseball sources in the Cuban Capital.

Lucchino informed an American sportswriter that they would "Sign Yuniesky Maya soon in order to deploy him as a reliever", and that they're also interested in First Baseman Jose Julio Ruiz.

Maya, who was the best pitcher in the 2008-2009 National Cuban series, and was also part of Team Cuba in the second World Baseball Classic , is currently located in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, waiting to be declared a Free Agent.

The 28-year-old Right Hander is being scouted by more than twenty Major League teams, and is physically and mentally ready to pitch in the upcoming season.

According to info from "El Nuevo Herald" , Jose Julio Ruiz will sign during the upcoming week.

25-Year-Old Ruiz was a standout as one of the most dominant players in the National Series, leading the 2007-2008 campaign in Hits and Stolen Bases, while being the leading RBI man during the last tournament. In five seasons, Ruiz has compiled a BA above the .330 mark.

Maya throws pretty hard but can be wild. He apparently has a pretty good secondary arsenal with a curveball. He recently started throwing that pitch, though, in lieu of a slider that he used to throw.

Ruiz played 1b, but he probably profiles as an OF due to his good speed and average power. He's not a slugger, he's more of a gap power guy with a good eye and solid speed. His biggest weakness is vs lefties.

Both guys could play in the bigs right now, Maya being a pen arm or a back end rotation guy and Ruiz being an OFer or a 1b for a lesser squad. They are good pickups and will be expensive, but the rumor is that the sox are signing both

Maya has a few different SRs out there. I read one on Maya from 2008 and it says he sat 92-94 and reaches 96mph. The one from mlbtraderumors says that he sits 88-92 with 4 offspeed pitches. At least thats what he showcased at his workout.

I'll ask around tomorrow.

Jose Mesa's brother is in town, so he might have some juicy tidbits.

Earlier this week, the Blue Jays appeared to be taking the lead in the race to sign Cuban first base prospect Jose Julio Ruiz. But don't count out the Red Sox yet, says an article in Diario Libre (story in Spanish), a daily newspaper in the Dominican Republic capital of Santo Domingo, where Ruiz is residing.

The story cites a "source familiar with the situation" as saying that the Red Sox are still actively pursuing Ruiz as a low-cost preemptive replacement for David Ortiz, and that the interest is mutual. Ruiz is eyeing Boston, the source says, because he believes he would soon have the opportunity to take Ortiz's spot, even if it means playing in the minors in the short term. This seemingly conflicts with Ruiz's agent Jorge Luis Toca's quote earlier this month that "the idea is to find a team where he'll have the best opportunity to rise the quickest," but on the other hand, Ortiz's slow start in 2009 didn't make him look like a huge roadblock. The team holds a $12.5MM club option for Ortiz in 2011, which if declined could make for an easy transition.

Go to Toronto and start right away or got to the minors for a year and play in Boston next season...

You really think the sox are going to hand over the 1b/DH spot to him after one yr in the minors? The name of the game is getting in and getting the clock started. Its ridiculous to say otherwise.

Ruiz, Ex-Agent Clash Over Split

Jose Julio Ruiz's recent change in agents, from Jorge Luis Toca to Legacy Sports, appears to have been far from amicable. Both Ruiz and Toca lobbed barbs yesterday through the Nuevo Herald's Luis Rangel (link in Spanish).

Among the claims: Toca says the Red Sox offered $2.5MM for Ruiz, but adds the team later withdrew their offer after seeing Ruiz "out of shape and overweight" last Monday. He also says Ruiz showed up for tryouts without a glove, leading some on the Boston side to conclude the Cuban prospect had "a bad character."

According to the agent, the Rangers offered $2MM to Ruiz and the Blue Jays offered $1.5MM, even though Ruiz's tryouts in front of scouts were disastrous, with the first baseman only managing 10 or 12 hits in over 100 ABs. Toca says he was negotiating with Tampa Bay last Thursday when Ruiz called him and announced the split because "he could not stand it anymore." He says he is planning legal action against the player for expenses, claiming Ruiz used his agency to get information about teams and money to give to other agents.

Ruiz replies that far from being out of shape, he was "better than ever" in recent workouts for Texas and Toronto. In regards to the Red Sox, he says he "could not do anything" during the workout because of a hangnail on his ring finger. He claims not to know where Toca's "10 or 12 hits" figure comes from, as he never staged any official tryouts. Ruiz insists his value fell on the market because of Toca's agency communicating poorly and "not doing their job," saying, "I believe if I had been with other people, I would have signed long before."
