Well for the most part' date=' it was basically interesting conversation given how slow the off-season currently is. She may have gotten a little offended because of the Minnesota thing, but all in all, nothing too big, just interesting debate.[/quote']

Truth be told, his numbers do look pretty good. You almost have me convinced -- but not quite. :)

You want convincing?

Baseball-reference uses a player's statistical "profile" to find the most comparable pitchers/hitters to said player, avoiding subjective stats like wins or AS games, or anything that's under the control of the team or voting etc etc etc.

Bert Blyleven's comparable pitchers:

1. Don Sutton (914) *

2. Gaylord Perry (909) *

3. Fergie Jenkins (890) *

4. Tommy John (889)

5. Robin Roberts (876) *

6. Tom Seaver (864) *

7. Jim Kaat (854)

8. Early Wynn (844) *

9. Phil Niekro (844) *

10. Steve Carlton (840) *

The top three are all deserving HOF's, and only Tommy John and Jim Kaat aren't hall of famers, but both raise a compelling case.

I think we have beaten this dead horse enough. There is one set of stats that i can't put my hands on. I was wondering where Blyleven ranks in all of the major pitching categories during the span of his career (1970 to 1992). That should tell us how dominant he was in his era.

Baseball reference has some of that info, detailing his rank in most statistical departments, but on a year-to-year basis.

Kaat has a great case, even when you put the numbers aside and look at his career as a whole. I'm surprised the vets haven't put him in yet.

But no doubt in MY MIND that Blyleven and Jack Morris should be in the hall as well, especially Morris.
