"Wow we're paying 4mil a year for a manager? There's probably hundreds of people out there who could do the job as well for probably 100,000 a year."

"You really think that taking the crap of 25 or more pampered jocks is that easy?"

And to that I say yes, for 4mil dollars I'd gladly tell John Smoltz he sucks and tell Beckett that he's pitching every five days. Personally I think the managers position is highly overrated and that it doesn't take a genius to arrange the 25 guys Theo gives him to work with every night.

id say its excessive but what is the league avg. price for a manager?

i think its a little excessive to pay a player multi millions to catch a football but that is what the market has set as their price, we watch the games we buy the tickets we demand good players and staff therefore we pay good money to get good players and staff, Tito has 2WS rings i view those as worthy of a good salary.

the position of manager isn't a concern on this team so why change it?

Better yet, why is a change only now being suggested, since Francona's contract numbers are anything but news?

And why do I think this thread will cease to get serious answers (for a while) if the Sox win tonight?

I don't think Tito earned his pay the last 4 games. Granted he was left short on injuries, but his game managing left something to be desired. Putting no-name rookie pitchers into close games is questionable--not with the so-called best bullpen around. And Bard was not a good choice in that situation yesterday--not in that park with all those HR hitters coming up. That situation called for a lot more experience--Oki and Ram for sure.

The Red Sox like to pamper their pitchers with pitch counts, down to the minor league level. But Tito seems to like to put young pitchers too soon into the frying pan--in the wrong situations. I recall the Clay Meredith fiasco a few years ago. Yesterday was not the time for Bard to assume the setup role.

We complain about Tito in July and August, then sing his praises in October. I'm upset with him too but that's what we do every year. I'm not saying it's easy to help it but we do it, it's human nature.

I think he's earned his pay looking at the whole body of work of the 2009 season...despite losing 6 in a row we're still 14 games above .500 and are setting ourselves up to be healthy and make a good run for the next two months. Just being in the thick of things should be good enough, with the recent organizational success we're spoiled and want to be in 1st place in the AL East for the full 162 games but that's not how things work.

Francona isn't to blame for the sweep. The f***ing lineup putting up goose eggs for 30 straight innings is to blame.

When the going gets tough, the manager has to get creative. And that doesn't mean bringing in a no-name minor league pitcher in a 2-0 game against NY--a kid who promptly gets DFA'd after the game. And it means playing smallball--scratching a run out by the usual methods.

The Red Sox play for big innings--period.

Tito is a nice guy, but he isn't intense--at least before October.

I'm sure he would have loved to use any other arm in the bullpen, but they all got worn down in the previous night's game. Gonzalez was normally a starter and at least could pitch extended innings if needed.
