I think he's saying throwing away however much money we did in buying out Schafer, it makes it look even more inexcusable with the truckload we gave to Timmy.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Even less cap space to work with to try to sign Kessel and Hunwick

Even less cap space to work with to try to sign Kessel and Hunwick

Doesn't look like we're signing Kessell, which I can live with. How many of his goals were gifts from Savard? Kessell didn't get many points against playoff caliber teams and he seems to disappear when play gets physical. Plus, the guy doesn't really play defense. For such a one dimensional player, there's no way I'd pay him the $5 million he wants.

In other NHL news' date=' the Blackhawks nabbed Marian Hossa for 12yrs/62mil[/quote']

Yeah, I saw we had a chance at him but the Blackhawks got him. Not sure how we would have been able to afford him.

Also looks like Kovy is set to resign with Montreal on a 2 year deal.

Kessel isn't worth $5 million. And with the amount of cap space we have, it would be crazy to give him that.

If you disagree, make an argument. Swearing doesn't make your opinion correct.

I disagree with that too. I dislike Kessel's game and agree that he's one dimensional, but you're insinuating that he isn't even one dimensional, and that his goals are handed to him on a silver platter by Savard.

Kessel can score, but he's pretty mediocre defensively. I'd pay him $4mil, not $5mil though.

No, the guy can score. I never said he couldn't. But I think his goal totals were a bit inflated because he had Savard and he racked up most of his points against teams that didn't make the playoffs. I'm just saying he's not worth $5 million, I'm not saying he's garbage.

Any clue what the cap hit was on Shaefer being retained vs. the hit on the buyout? In other words, what did this buyout cost them in terms of cap space.

As for Timmy, I see the two issues as mutually exclusive...if the Thomas signing was too generous, then it was too generous regardless of what happened with Shaefer.

Small sample size. I was obviously talking about the regular season.

Honestly, do you think he's worth $5 mil or not?

Good luck signing Kane and Toews next summer.

Hossa's pretty popular for these one year playoff window deals.

Posted
Why are you talking about one year playoff deals when he just got signed for 12?

I meant the Hawks will have a one year window. At least that's what it looks like with their cap space.

Yes

If we're gonna pay him $5 million, he better be able to play multiple positions. We still have holes to fill and that would be the rest of our cap space.

Don't get me wrong, I like Kessel. The guy can score. Period. And he's only 21 so he can improve an his defense. But I think he's worth more like $3.5-$4 million at this point in his career. Maybe the two could compromise somewhere between 4-5.

The Schaefer buyout will result in a cap hit of $567k for 2009-10 and 2010-11.

One reason he was kept in the AHL all of last year (in addition to the fact that he's not that good!) is because had he played in the NHL for the Bruins his cap hit would have been much higher...I believe I read that the final yr of his contract would have cost the B's $2.3 million. Not sure what that translates too in cap hit terms.

So in 2008-09 he didn't cost the B's anything in terms of cap space when he was kept in Providence all year. However, even repeating that approach, this coming year he'd still be paid $2.3m to play in the AHL...way too much. There's a contingent that still believes all that matters is cap hit...this move shows that cap room is NOT the only consideration (at least for the Jacobs family) and that cash out the door is still a concern.

So it's a $5.2m cap hit for the Blackhawks over the next 12 yrs for the now 30 yr old Hossa. These long term deals, unless they involve significant out-clauses for the teams, can really come back to bite later.

Habs sign Cammalleri. 39 Goals and 43 Assists last year for Calgary.

Gomez, Spacek, Gill, and Cammalleri...

Man.. Habs are spending some $$$, but they had a ton of room, like 25 million.

They did lose Lang, Koivu, Tanguay, possibly Kovalev, Higgins, Schneider....Gomez is average making elite money, while Cammy is getting market value. IMO they're no better today than last season

Wow. Looks like we might not be sweeping the season series this year.

Hossa's deal is heavily front loaded. He will make $59.3 mil in the first 8 years and $3.5 over final four.

Pretty sure Higgins went in the Gomez deal.
