Game 2 of the ALCS was the worst managing job in the history of the sport.

Agree

we could be looking at back to back championship if not for that game

Here are the heads that I want to roll (i'm willing to give one silver dollar for each of their scalps!):

Julio Lugo- need to say more? doubt it.

Javier Lopez- ,, ,,

Penny- though he makes good throws every now and then, he seems to be overly inconsistent.

For all the crap Penny got heading in to yesterday he still put up a QS yesterday.

If he can continue to do that, he should build good value from some NL contending team down the line. Maybe the Sox will get something of value in return for him. The sox would still have Masterson,Buchholz and Smoltz to replace him in the rotation.

But so far my list is,

1. Lugo

2. Lopez

Big Papi.

I have no clue how to gracefully subtract him from the line-up but I do think Carter/Bailey needs to replace him. I understand it will not help Ortiz's trade value - but more at bats he gets - the value becomes worse. On hindsight - we should have traded him in the offseason perhaps.

Edit - anyone likes the idea of getting Dunn from the Nat's ?

Ortiz is owed roughly $26 million through the end of his contract next year. In this day and age, not many teams are chomping at the bit especially when he's hitting the way is

If we're talking about dumping contracts, Id say Lugo is priority #1

Lugo is hitting at least. Ortiz does not hit and never takes the field.

I think the best will be if we DL Ortiz and then send him to Pawtucket for rehab starts. But I doubt he will take it positively. So trading is the only option we are left with the way he is batting. I do not like trading him now - but we are running out of options.

You don't think he'll take kindly to a rehab assignment but in the same breath advocate trading the guy?

Interesting.

What options we have if he does not improve?

Ortiz isn't really costing the team right now, there's no point in cutting your losses with him right now considering his history of producing

TheKilo and BoSox21 - I understand your responses from financial terms - but in the meantime he is costing us games. We are in second position now but already proved to be vulnerable on the roads like last year. At some point - we will have to move him if we want to stay in the race. I am not sure what is the way to take him out of the lineup without trading him. Hitting has been OK so far which has masked his ineffectiveness. But we can't continue to keep him on daily line-up if he does not produce.

His hitting woes are bigger because he is the current #3 hitter. Moving him down to 6th or 7th in the order should help the lineup

It really makes no discernible difference at all.

The team is on pace for 97 wins despite the rotation pitching like ass

They're also 3rd in runs scored in the league, one run behind the Yankees despite their #3 hitter having less home runs than Yovani Gallardo

How is he costing us games when we just won 11 in a row and are currently 3-4 on this road trip?

How long will you keep him at the 3rd spot/in the lineup if you are the manager?

What are we debating, if I was manager or what Francona is going to do?

I'd probably leave him there until the end of May.

Francona will leave him there until at least the ASB.

Nice job deflecting the question BTW

I agree with your timeline. I do not see anything physically wrong with him - the only way to explain is that it is a prolonged slump and he might be able to break out of it.

Tito will play him the entire year irrespective of how he bats.
