That was the sound of all Patroits pretensions of continuing their dynasty ending.

Let's not get carried away. Of course you know the pats can't be happy considering TB left Mass to go to California to have surgery. I am sure they would prefer he be under doctors care that they know and trust......although the guy that did it is supposed to be good.

Looks like they went ahead with the surgery even though the MCL wasn't healed yet and it's the MCL incision that is causing the infection.

Tom Brady’s decision to have surgery just 29 days after tearing apart his left knee may be the reason the New England Patriots quarterback is fighting infections, a league source said.

Brady, the NFL’s 2007 MVP, had his ACL and MCL torn in the first quarter of the Patriots' first game on a hit by Chiefs safety Bernard Pollard.

There are conflicting philosophies on how long to wait before performing surgery, but league sources say the Patriots encouraged Brady to wait until his MCL healed before having the ACL surgically repaired. That’s usually a six-week span.

But Brady, wanting to resume training as soon as possible, looked for alternatives that would have him rehabilitating sooner. And now he's battling infection in the area of the MCL. That area, according to The Boston Herald, has required three procedures since the initial surgery.

"It's bad," said the source.

ESPN.com, citing a source it did not identify, reported that “the Patriots, as an organization, are upset with the situation because they were clear that they wanted Brady’s surgery done under the direction of doctors of their choosing in Boston.”

Later on Thursday, the team issued a statement denying that they are upset that Brady opted against the team’s preferred doctors and decided to have surgery on the West Coast.

“This unsubstantiated report does not represent the team’s views whatsoever,” the statement said. “We have supported Tom Brady one hundred percent from day one of this process and will continue to do so. ... Today, we reiterate our total support for Tom as he recovers from his injury.”

Brady decided to have his surgery done by Dr. Neal ElAttrache on Oct. 6 at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles.

According to the source, ElAttrache found Brady’s MCL was still “loose” when he went in to operate, so he performed a procedure to remedy that. ElAttrache then performed the ACL repair with a patellar tendon graft.

Had surgery been delayed, the MCL would have likely been fully healed and needed no attention, experts say. Ultimately, the infection could affect the integrity of the ACL repair and — worst-case scenario — lead to permanent knee stiffness caused by scar tissue that builds around the infection.

Also, if the ACL repair is compromised, Brady will need the procedure repeated. Experts say that if that’s the case he’ll need six weeks to clear the infection before that’s performed. And that would likely cause him to miss at least the beginning of the 2009 season.

The NFL’s Collective Bargaining Agreement permits players to choose their own doctors.

and infections are a part of life. We do everything in our power to try and control for them, but they happen, even when people do their best to prevent them. This is a risk that everyone faces when they go under the knife.

October 24, 2008

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has had three surgeries on his injured left knee, the last two in recent weeks to battle a rare infection stemming from the repair of two torn ligaments.

According to a renowned orthopedist who was consulted by Brady's surgeon, Dr. Neal ElAttrache, the quarterback appears to be responding to antibiotics and doctors are confident his recovery timetable for his ligament graft has not been compromised.

"What I gather from talking to Neal today is that Tom's getting better, and what has been done is getting him well," said Dr. James Andrews, widely regarded as the country's pre-eminent sports orthopedist.

"Optimistically, once you get this under control and you can save that graft and win the infection battle -- which apparently from what I gather he is winning -- once the healing process catches back up, it really doesn't set him behind to any degree relative to the overall healing process. The main thing is to save the graft."

The surgeries were performed in L.A. by ElAttrache of the Kerlan-Jobe Clinic. When the infection appeared, ElAttrache consulted with Andrews, whose patients have included Peyton Manning and Michael Jordan. Andrews has a clinic in Birmingham, Ala.

"Neal called me in confidence to run this problem by me to see what I thought," Andrews said by phone. "We went over that, one, he should be aggressive about going back in, don't wait on it, don't let [the infection] continue to declare itself. Get it washed out and scope it. And I said he'd probably have to re-scope it several more times to make sure he got it under control."

ESPN, citing unnamed sources, reported the Patriots were upset because they wanted Brady's surgery done by doctors of their choosing. The club denied the report.

Likewise, Andrews said Brady made the right decision in selecting ElAttrache. "[Neal is] very knowledgeable and as good a decision maker in taking care of athletic injuries -- including complications -- as anyone in the world."

Let's see if the Pats still stick with Cassel down the stretch. If they do, then they believe that if TB can't come back he's the starting QB for next year too. From what I've seen right now, it looks like BB is really serious about developing Matt, and it'd be touch and go whether they wanted to start over with another new young QB or even with KOC, who needs some apprenticeship time.

I still find it ironic that the two college QB's that Cassel couldn't compete with for the starting job in college, Leinart and Palmer, are both having much worse seasons. By some accounts, Cassel was considered nearly as talented as the Palmer and Leinart but couldn't bust in. I think we've seen some evidence of that, as just every schlub off the street couldn't come in stone cold after never starting for 7 years and win more games than he lost even with a good team behind him.'

BTW -- whatever happened to that Hawii QB, Brennan I think it was, who was so effective with the Rainbow Warriors last year? Looked like Brady Lite like when I saw him on TV. I know he was in the draft discussion but have no idea where he is. If he's holding someone's clipboard right now it might not be a bad idea to take a look at him as a trade target if this Brady stuff goes from worse to worst.

EDIT: Found him. Redskins' clipboard holder and third string QB. Selected in guess what, the 6th round. Scouting report, very accurate, tough and spunky but small, not that strong of arm. Considered a system QB. I'd call him underrated, but he was an also-ran for the Heismann last year. Sound familiar to anyone?

I think it's a possibility but the NFL isn't my best sport in terms of knowing what the hell is going on.
