Colon to 15 Day DL

Red Sox righthander Bartolo Colon has been placed on the 15-day disabled list due to stiffness in his lower back.

 

The Red Sox have recalled righthander Chris Smith from Triple-A Pawtucket to take his spot on the roster.

 

Colon twice came to the plate last night and he swung so hard in the fourth inning at a Cole Hamels changeup that his lower back stiffened up and he did not return to the mound in the bottom of the fifth inning.

 

"I think I hurt it on that swing where my helmet fell off," Colon said last night through first-base coach Luis Alicea, who translated.

all this means is Justin Masterson gets to stay with the big club for a little while longer. If Colon never got hurt, Masterson would've been optioned to 'Tucket on Saturday, when Dice-K gets activated. At this point, I'd take Masterson in the rotation over Colon anyway.

Maybe this will help him from burning out his arm like he did last year. Hopefully the rest will do him some good. Masterson is more than capable of holding down his spot for a few more starts.

So I'm guessing Hank will go to the media and say "see, if Colon didn't have to bat, the Sox wouldn't have lost Colon, it's all the NL's fault, blah, blah, blah?"

More pace info for those of you that love it: If you extrapolate Mastersons innings out to 200, he is on pace to give up well over 30 bombs. Eh.

 

Anyhow, this isn't really a big deal. I think if they weren't getting Matsuzaka back they probably would not have put Colon on the DL, but like Beckett last year, this seems to be one of those luxurious occasions where you can throw a guy on the DL and not really miss a beat in doing so. So why not go for it? Give him some rest, let the kid stay with the club and hope Matsuzaka pitches like he normally does on extended rest: Like Zeus throwing god damn lightning bolts. We need it right now. The Cy is still within reach if DiceK has a big second half. Do it.

This is fine. He gets a few weeks off, and will take Masterson's spot when he's healthy.

the sox have so much depth that an injury to a starter is in essence a blessing.

starve colon for a month,he looks like hes gotten bigger.

bring him back 8/1 and hope we can get 60 days of decency out of him

the youngsters are pitching well enough to keep us on top while the vets get right.

amazing how stacked we are in pitching.
