Obliques are a bitch to deal with. They could be a one or two week thing, or if they arent rehabbed right, could be a 6 week or longer thing to deal with. Hell, Tim Hudson nearly lost a season to a pulled oblique. I would assume Francona will put Manny on pine duty for the next 2 weeks, most likely missing the next 4 games against NY and may try and move him into the lineup for the last week of September. The last thing he is gonna want to do is rush this when the sox have such a big lead. And this is the kind of injury, that when aggravated, is worse than the initial injury and could really pose a problem.

It was reported last night on Nesn that Manny will miss about 10 days. You are right though, who really knows? This could end up lasting the entire season, which would make this divison race much more of a dogfight IMO. This offense absolutely has to have Manny Ramirez in it, for it to be a good unit.

Give him a few days of ultrasound and get his ass back in the lineup.

that wont help too much if he reinjures it once he takes the field. Here's the deal. If you think that the sox are a lock to make the playoffs (regardless of where), then why risk rushing manny back and having him get hurt. The key is that he is 100% for the playoffs.

For those of you who wanted to blame Manny for the sox offensive inconsistencies, I would assume you got your wakeup call the past 2 games. Subtracting Manny and inserting a shmuck like Hinske makes the sox lineup totally pedestrian. Papi can be pitched carefully to, the bottom of the order becomes more of a joke, and unless the sox get a hold of one and ride it out of the park, rallies are easily avoidable. Manny needs to get back soon. If he misses the next series in 2 weeks, you might be swept again.

Hinske played well tonight....but we need Manny, his reputation alone gets Papi better pitches to swing at.

Well, in September, when you have the 40 man roster active, you dont need to make a roster move unless he is gonna be placed on the 60 man DL. Since that isnt likely, they dont have to be forthright with anything. Better to have the other team prepare for Manny than not.

Or, more than likely, they didn't find anything major. Manny Being Manny, he's taking his usual late summer vacation. He'll be back for next weekend's series after a week off. His spasms have the whole thing covered.

I dont think they would have found anything major, but to say this is just spasms may be a bit naive. Spasms usually dont last a week in a professional athlete who has everything at their disposal to stop a muscle from spasming.

The F.O. is using everything at their disposal to keep Manny happy and justify his vacation right now. Clearly the team needs him out there with his game face on going into the playoffs. You know it, I know it, Manny knows it, and the F.O. knows it - he'll probably be off for the homestand and back Thursday at Camden Yards.

Now Manny's return is now up to Manny. I hope he realizes the Sox are in a pennant race.

By Gordon Edes, Globe Staff | September 18, 2007

TORONTO - The date of Manny Ramírez's return is essentially up to him, Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. Ramírez has missed the team's last 19 games, including last night, since straining his left oblique Aug. 28 in New York.

"He needs to clear himself," Francona said. "The medical people have gotten fairly aggressive, he's swinging the bat fairly aggressively, but there has to be . . . a confidence from himself that he can go play the game and not hurt himself. And that's a hard thing. Myself included, you see him go hit the ball out on the street, you go, 'Oh man,' but you can really make some disastrous mistakes trying to read somebody else's body. It doesn't work."

He will be useless if he comes back to early for the pennant and gets injured worse. Get him back in for the last 6 or 7 games to get his timing back for the PO. The O is not been the problem as of late. They have actually done well. Gagne and the rest of the BP have hit a ruff patch lately and thats why the Division is up for grabs, not because Manny is out. Ellsbury has been playing his ass off and playing damn good too in his place.

Is Ellsbury able to be on the PO roster?

I find it hypocritical of people on this board that would sit there and bitch about JD Drew and not say a f***ing word about Manny. Drew's probably playing with a shredded shoulder but at least he's actually playing. But he doesn't play with any emotion or kick water coolers over so it's OK to be upset with him.

Manny, though. That's just Manny being Manny, man. He's so good, maybe he could have made the difference in the 9 losses we've had lately, with like 7 of them being two runs or less. You think his bat could make a difference?

I see your point Kilo.

But I am not one of those guys that has tried to run down Drew all year. Look at my posts about him, Ive backed him all season.

We need to get Manny back as soon as possible. The offense has been struggling the past few games. We need Manny's bat back that's for sure. We still have solid power in the lineup but I think Manny will give us that extra boost the Sox need.
