per rotoworld.

David Ortiz is out of the Red Sox's starting lineup against the Angels on Wednesday due to a sore shoulder.

It's the same injury that Ortiz missed four games with after trying to stretch a single into a double on July 20. "I've been feeling pain the whole time since I injured it," Ortiz said. "When I swing and not make contact with a pitch, it hurts. I think this couple of days will be good for me." The Red Sox are off on Thursday, so Ortiz is likely planning on taking today and tomorrow off and returning to action against the Orioles on Friday.

interesting. Ortiz sits out and the sox score a shiteload of runs.

he really needs the offseason, he's clearly not the same power hitter he has been with us, and we can't really shut him down because though he's not the same he is still a 1.000+ OPS hitter and we can't take that out of the lineup.

i still think we should shut him down and get his knee taken care of...then the shoulder can heal as well.....keep WMP and give him more ab's. Let's get ready for the postseason, we need tizzle more then than now!

Honestly, we make not make the postseason if Ortiz sits.

I also think scoring runs last night had something to do with that shitbag Mosely pitching instead of Saunders (who still wasn't great) or Weaver.

I was not associating last night with my post.....i just think if we plan on winning the whole thing, we need tizzle at 100%........and until he takes time off that isn't going to happen. my $.02

The Herald is running a story on Ortiz today saying that he is unable to perform his daily workout regiment due to his injured shoulder. No weights means less power apparently. He sounds like he is really hurting.

I wish they would just rest him instead of throwing him out there every night. He's not performing and if we don't get him some rest october will be short. (if we get there)

No.

I have heard the argument that Cortisone is a PED, and I think it is valid, but MLB doesn't have a rule against it. Cortisone doesn't make you play better, it just allows you to play through the pain.

cortisone decreases inflammation, which can paradoxically help to heal an injury. Your body produces inflammation in response to injury which leads to more blood and more nutrients being rushed to the site of injury, thus causing healing. But with a chronic injury or one that the body cannot fix (like a torn meniscus or a torn labrum or with osteophytes from osteoarthritis), there will be inflammation without an end in site in terms of total recovery. Hence, you take down the inflammation with the cortisone shot and it allows you to play pain free. But there is only so much you can take. It is a steroid, this is true, but it is not anabolic like Winstril.
