There's an old say in baseball that bases on balls will kill you, well for Sox RHP prospect Javier Jimenez it wasn't base on balls Thursday but hit batters, as he hit 3 in 1 2/3 IP as the Sox lost to the Dodgers 6-1 and are now in third place of Boca Chica North division 1 1/2 games behind the Dodgers and half a game behind second place Giants. On Friday the Sox plays the Giants.

Outfielder Wilfi Santana had 2 hits in 3 AB and first baseman Eddie Lora had 2 base hits in 4 AB where the only hitters of note. Jimenez was the Sox starter and lost the game 1 2/3 IP 1 H 5 R 4 ER 2 BB 1 K, followed by Yeiper Castillo 5 Ip 3 H 1 r 1 ER 1 BB 4 K and finished by Manuel Rivera 2 IP 1 H 0 R 0 BB 4 K.

While the Red Sox chances of going to the play offs unlikely, there are prospects who has had a good DSL season.

Venezuelan Outfielder Ronald Bermudez has a very good chance of being the DSL MVP and here its why. The 19 yrs its is leading the DSL in hitting ave with a 363 average, its first in the division and second in the DSL in hits with 65 (the leader has 70 in a lot more AB) Its first in the divison and tied for fourth in DSL in Doubles with 15 (the leaders have 17) its tied for fourth in the Division in RBI with 32, in addition has 3 HR, along 2 triples, the 20 xtra bases leads the team, also has 34 bases on balls (second on the squad) and only 28 strike outs (which leads the team with players with at least 95 AB) in 179 AB (officially) has stolen 11 bases on 16 tries and its the only position player on the DSL squad who hasn't committed an error in 2007.

Dominican outfielder Roberto Feliz leads the DSL with 44 RBI, the 19 yrs OF its tied for third in the division with 12 doubles and in hits with 54and its 10th on the division in hitting average with 290 (second on the team) leads the Sox with 5 HR, has struck out 36 and has 18 BB in 186 AB. Dominican second baseman Wilfred Pichardo its tied for the lead of the DSL in runs scored with 47 runs, its tied for the lead of the DSL in tripples with 6, the 17 yrs rookie its second in the division and fifth on the DSL with 25 stoles bases out of 30 tries (leaders has 27) its third on the team with 33 BB and in hiting average with 257 in 210AB which leads the team, has struck out 48 times and its fourth on the team with 15 errors. Second year SS Luis Diaz its tied with Feliz third in the Division in doubles with 12, but the 18 yrs Dominican leads the team with 19 errors in 36 games.

Pitching wise Dominican RHP Solmy Pimentel leads the team with 52K and IPs 51 the 17 yrs has a 3.05 ERA, its second on the team with the fewest BB allowed (for pitchers who has pitched 28 Ip or more) Colombian RHP Randy Consuegra leads the team in Wins with 4 and the 17 yrs rookie its second on the team in ERA (for pitchers who has pitched 15 IP or more) with 1.38 ERA, in 39 IP has allowed 26 H (like Pimentel hasn't allowed a HR) with 19 BB and 31K. Dominican LHP Cesar Cabral its second on the team with 48 K and IP 49, the second year 18 yrs its fourth on the team with a 1.84 ERA and has allowed 42 H (0 HR) Venezuelan RHP Yeiper Castillo its third on the team with 1.71 ERA in 42 IP has allowed 27 H (0 HR) and the second year 18 yrs its fourth on the team with 45K along 17 BB. Dominican LHP Manuel Rivera leads the team in ERA with 1.04 in 26 IP and 18 H (0 HR) the 17 yrs rookie its second on the team with 5 SV has 30 K and 14BB. RHP from Curacao dennis Neuman leads the team with 7 SV and games pitched 18, the 17 yrs rookie has pitched 24 IP 16 H ( 0 HR) for a 2.22 ERA 22 k 10 BB. Dominican RHP Charlie Rosario leads the team in allowing the least BB with 10 in 48 IP and 47 K (the IP & Ks are third on the team) the 18 yrs rookie has allowed 43 H (most on the team) (2 HR) and 3.91 ERA.

A name that I have left out is Dominican RHP Anataner Batista, but the 18 yrs second year man put very good numbers, like a 2.19 ERA in 24 IP 19 H (0 HR) 8 BB and 32K before he got hurt.

The DSL finished its regular season Friday's the 24th and the Red Sox Sox entry finished with a record of 38-31 and 1 tied in fourth place of its division 10 games behind the division winner Giants.

This is how the final stat look like.

Catchers; Venezuelan Maykol Sanchez caught the most games with 42G and the 5-11 176 19 yrs in his first year in the DSL hit for a 221 average in 131 AB with only 3 extra base hits all doubles, had 9 RBI, walked 18 times and struck out 23 times. The Right handed hitter also commited one error and should be back in the DSL for 2008.

Dominican Derwin Pinto was next in games played with 28G, the 17 yrs who is 5-10 196 also playing in his first year in the DSL and its a right handed hitter hit for a 220 average in 82 AB also had only 3 extra base hits with 2 doubles and a tripple, had 13 RBI and walked 19 and struck out 24 times. Pinto commited 2 errors and would be bacl for the 2008 DSL.

Dominican Marcial De La Nieve was the Sox third string catcher and 5-11 185 19 yrs right handed hitter played in 13 games and in 29 AB hit for a 172 average with 2 doubles 5 RBI walked 5 times and struck out 6 times. De La Nieve who played in his second year in the DSL and commited 2 errors in 2007 isn't likely back on the Sox system.

Witch means the 2008 Sox's DSL catchers should Sanchez, Pinto and recently signed Venezuelan Jesus Rojas.

Infield:

Eddie Lora was the Sox first baseman in 2007 and the 6-2 228 Dominican played in 65 games and the 18 yrs who is a awitch hitter and left handed thrower hit for a 222 average in 216 AB with 5 doubles 2 tripples and 4 HR ( third on the team) 28 R 19 RBI walked 48 times (first on the team) but struck out 92 times (also first on the team) stole 4 bases and got caught 3 times. Lora playing in his first year in the DSL commited 6 errors and should be back in DSL for 2008.

Wilfred Pichardo was the Sox second baseman in 2007. Pichardo a 17 yrs Dominican is 5-9 146 switch hitter played in 68 games (most on the team) and in 270 AB hit for a 241 average (third best on the team) with 7 doubles and 7 tripples ( tied for first in the league) 0 HR, had 55 runs scored (first in the conference and fifth in the DSL) 14 RBI, walked 37 times (third on team) but struck out 63 times (second on team) stole 33 bases (second on the conference and fourth in the DSL) and got caught stealing 6 times. Pichardo a first year (DSL) player commited 18 errors and its 50-50 if he will be back to DSL in 2008 or get promoted to the GCL)

Jackvid Avila was the scheduled back up, but the 18 yrs Venezuelan played all over the infield and outfield and in 24 games. the 6-0 160 right handed hitter hit for a 207 average in 87 AB and 6 doubles as his only extra bases, 8 RBI 4 BB and 19 times struck out, stole 2 bases out of 3 tries. Avila second year player made 3 errors. Its not likely that Avila will return to the organization in 2008.

Luis Diaz was the regular short stop, Diaz a 18 yrs Dominican played in 48 G and the 6-0 155 right handed hitter hit for 176 average in 165 AB with 14 (second most of the team) 3 tripples (second most on the team) 0 HR, but only 11 RBI, 13 BB (least among the regulars) struck 48 times, stole 2 bases out of 3 tries. Diaz a second year player in the league commited 20 errors (most on the team) and there's a good chance he could be back for a third year in the DSL in 2008.

German Reyes was the back up SS, Reyes a 19 yrs Dominican played in 32 G and 6-1 182 right handed hitter hit for 122 average (second worst on the team) with 2 doubles and 2 HR had 6 RBI in 82 AB, 14 BB and struck out 33 times, also stole 1 base out 3 tries. Reyes a first year player made 19 errors, there is a good chance Reyes wouldn't be back.

Nelson Bonilla was the Sox third baseman in 2007. Bonilla a 20 yrs Dominican played in 44 G and 144 AB the 6-4 195 right handed hitter hit for 203 average in 158 AB with 8 doubles and 3 HR with 28 RBI (third most on the team) with 16 bb and struck out 50 times. bonilla a third year player in the league can't come back to the DSL and its not likely that he would be promoted to the GCL, which means the end of his time in the Red Sox system.

Pedro Chourio was the back up third baseman when the DSL season started, but in the last quarter of the season was the starter. Chourio 17 yrs Venezuelan was part of the great group that the Red Signed early in the early phase of the 2006 International signing )Beltre, Tejada, Anthony Alvarado and Stolmy Pimentel where the other ones. Chourio a 6-2 211 right handed hitter played in 30 G with a 191 average in 94 AB 4 doubles where his only extra hits, 7 RBI 12 BB and struck out 44 times. Chourio who also made 18 errors will be the only member of the above group who won't be playing in the US and will be returning to the DSL.

The 2008 Red Sox infielders should be Chourio, Lora, Diaz, perhaps Pichardo and recently signed Joantoni Garcia and Rafael Espinosa. Garcia a Venezuelan and Espinosaa Dominican both are short stop.

Dominican Roberto Feliz was the Sox left fielder/DH for 2007. Feliz a 6-1 180 19 yrs right handed hitter played in 64 G (Fourth most on the eam) in 240 AB (second most on the team) hit for a 304 average (third best in the division) with 13 doubles (third best on the team) 1 tripple and 7 HR (tied for the conference top) his 55 RBI tieds for the DSL tops 35 R (third on the team) 23 BB 50 times struck out and stole 6 bases, but got caught 6 times trying to steal. Feliz in his second year in the DSL made 1 error in the field and would be playing in the GCL in 2008.

Juan Bonifacio was the Sox back up left fielder/DH in 2007. Bonifacio a 6-2 168 18 yrs Dominican played in 47 G and hit for a 221 average in 145 AB with 9 doubles, 1 tripple and 5 HR (second most on the team) with 22 RBI 17 BB and struck out 60 times and stole 7 bases out of 10 tries. Bonifacio a right handed hitter in his first year in the DSL made 3 errors. Expect for Bonifacio to have a big year (specially in the power department) in 2008.

The most likely MVP in the DSL is the Sox center fielder Ronald Bermudez. Bermudez a 6-0 165 19 yrs right handed hitter played in 65 G won the DSL batting tittle with a 349 average in 229 AB, his 80 base hits where the fifth highest in the DSL, his 19 doubles tied for the DSL best, also had 3 tripples and 3 HR. His 39 RBI where the conference fifth best, 42 BB (second most on the team) and struck out 34 times, with 12 stolen bases and getting caught 9 times. Bermudez playing in his second year in the DSL didn't made a error in 2007 and will be playing in the GCL in 2008.

The back up center fielder is perhaps the squad fastest runner and best defense in the outfield. I am talking about Dominican Miguel Meregildo. Mereguildoa 18 yrs 6-0 164 right handed hitter played in 29 G, but had a very dissapointing season with the bat and hit a team worst 121 average in 58 AB with 0 extra base hits, walked 12 times and struck out 22. Meregildo stole 4 bases and got caught 2 times, playing in his second year in the DSL made 4 errors and I would say that his chances of staying in the organization and come back for a third year to the DSL aren't any better than 50-50.

Dominican Wilfi Santana was the Sox right fielder. Sanatana a 6-0 185 18 yrs from the well known baseball town of San Pedro de Macoris, perhaps has the best arm of the Sox outfielders in the DSL played in 53G hit for a 234 average in 188 AB with 6 double and a tripple 0 HR, only 16 RBI, 7 BB and 38 struck outs, in addition stole 5 bases and got caught 2 times. Santana playing in his second year made 4 errors and should come back to the DSL in 2008 for his third year.

Pedro Gonzalez was the Sox back up RF for 2008. Gonzalez a Dominican its the second youngest player on the squad and 17 yrs, The 6-0 185 left handed hitting and thrower play in 39 G and hit for a 220 average in 123 AB with 3 doubles 2 tripples and 0 HR with 9 RBI, 13 BB and it struck out 29 times, stole 1 base and got caught 2 times. Gonzalez playing in his first year in the DSL made 3 errors. Gonzalez who might be the team best pure hitter only behind Bermudez will come back to the DSL in 2008.

The Sox outfielders for the 2008 DSL should be Juan Bonifacio, Pedro Gonzalez, Wilfi Santana, perhaps Miguel Meregildo and the newly signed Venezuelan Javier Gutierrez.

The top left handed pitching prospect is 18 yrs Cesar Cabral. Manuel Rivera was one of the 2 Sox closers, Rivera a 6-0 170, 17 yrs Dominican left hander pitched in 20 g all in relief and had 6 saves with a 3-2 record and 1.04 ERA (best on the team) in 34 2/3 IP 24 H ( 0 HR) 17 BB 37 K. Rivera who played in his first year in the DSL finished 16 G and will pitching in the GCL in 2008.

The other Sox closer is Dennis Neuman. Dominican Brandon Ulloa isn't a closer, but the 6-2 170 18 yrs right handed only pitched in relief in 2007 14 G 2-1 record and a 2.63 ERA in 37 2/3 IP he allowed 30 H (2 HR) with 21 BB and 36 K. Ulloa in his second year in the DSL hit 4 batters and there's a good chance that he will pitch in the GCL in 2008.

In the Dominican Anataner Batista is known as little Pedro, as in Pedro Martinez, because of his stuff and his short status (5-10 150) The 18 yrs right handed was having an outstanding year as one of the Sox starter until he got hurt and missed the rest of the year in 6G 5 GS was 3-0 and a 2.19 ERA in 24 2/3 IP he allowed 19 H (0 HR) 8 BB and 32 K. Batista in his second year in the DSL had a 209 batting average against and if healthy could be pitching in the GCL in 2008.

Randy Consuegra is the second Colombian in the Red Sox in the system with RHP Jorge Rodriguez who's pitching in Greenville being the other one. Consuegra is a 6-2 170 17 yrs right handed who pitched in 14 G 8 GS with a record 4-2 record and 2.59 ERA in 48 2/3 IP he allowed 39 H (1 HR) with 30 BB and 38 K. Consuegra pitching in his first year in the DSL didn't finished very strong and because of this would only be a 50-50 chance that he would be promoted to the GCL in 2008.

Dominican Manuel Jimenez is another reliever. Jimenez who is 5-11 177, RH is 20 yrs pitched in 11 G all as a reliever with a record of 3-0 and a 1.16 ERA and in 23 1/3 IP 13 H (0 HR) 7 BB 19 K. Jimenez didn't pitched as much as the other relievers but because he is 20 yrs and pitched very well should get a promotion to the GCL in 2008.

Victor De La Cruz was a starter and a reliever. De La Cruz a 6-0 168, 18 yrs Dominican pitched in 13 G 2 GS and a record 1-3, 3.31 ERA. In 32 1/3 IP 31 ( 0 HR) 27 BB 23 K. De La Cruz will be coming back to the DSL for the third year.

Jimenez pitching in his first year in the DSL hit 11 Batters (to lead the team) and will be one of the starters for the Sox in the 2008 DSL season.

Dominican RH Juan Ronaldo who is 6-1 170, 17 yrs didn't pitch in 2007

The 2008 Red Sox pitching staff for now its De la Cruz, Gonzalez, perhaps Consuegra, M Jimenez, Lastreto, Reyes, Marin, Ronaldo and the newly signed Dominican Roman Mendez a RHP.
