Four of the players (Craig Hansen, Kason Gabbard, David Murphy and David Pauley) tasted at least a cameo with the Red Sox last season. The other eight (Nick Debarr, George Kottaras, Clay Buchholz, Kyle Jackson, Edgar Martinez, Chad Spann, Jacoby Ellsbury and Brandon Moss) are viewed to be reasonably close to making their Major League debuts.

How do the prospects get selected?

"It's a fairly loose criterion," said Hazen. "We didn't do the program last year, so there were some guys who may have been candidates to come last year that we sort of condensed into this year, too. I think the expectation is guys who are within an 18-month timeframe to get to the big leagues. It's not just for rookies. It's for guys that we want to help ease the transition not only to the big leagues, but for the guys that are here to stay."

I was kind of surprised to see some of these names as considered as 18 months or less away, I have the feeling even tho it might be not such a good idea, that if Bucholz has a decent year this year in the minors he he will be battling for 1 of the 2 rotation spots that will be open after this season.
