Well Giles might be nice at 2B if your not willing to give pedroia the job. I think they will stick with the cheap Pedroia and let him learn as he goes.

You might be on to something Jackson, but we signed some guy named Castillo to a minor league deal( Sox don't announce Minor league deals until Jan. I guess) and gave him an invite to ST. He supposed to beable to catch a knuckleball, which is all he really needs to do and maybe get a hit every once in awhile.

Is that Alberto Castillo? The yankees had him at one point. Good D, absolutely TERRIBLE hitter. I am not talking Mirabelli bad. I am not even talking Flaherty bad. He is even worse. And that was a few yrs ago, he is older and worse now. The yankees just signed a guy with almost exactly the same MO, Raul Chavez. These guys wont be cracking our rosters unless there is significant injury, you can bet on that one.

Hollins is interesting. If the Sox are able to trade Crisp for Gonzalez, Hollins could provide a stop gap CF until Ellsbury looks ready. He'd provide good D and some pop.

Joel Pineiro isn't a horrible option for SP depth.

I agree about Toby Hall. He'll get some interest from big market clubs looking for a backup. I think he wants to start somewhere, though. Interesting to see what plays out.

agree 100% ORS. Hollins would be a nice little stop gap for you guys. Plus, he owns the yankees it seems.

Sorry never heard of Hollins, can anyone give me a quick recap on him?

Jackson, ya thats his name and by the way you described him he sounds like a fit for our back up catcher role( catch the knuckler, can't hit the broad side of a barn with a shovel). O well he just needs to beable to catch Wake. I'd like to Kottras as the back up and get into the swing of things, but with him I think Tek might start to worry about his job and not focus on his other tasks. Not saying Tek would, but to any player having a young prospect behind you has got to be in the back of your mind atleast. So I guess it's good we go with the cheap old defensive catcher this year and mix Kottras into things next year.

Kottras now I think of it probably owuld be better off with a full year in AAA, and if something goes wrong maybe he could be a later call up.

Another quick idea, if Coco is traded I would imagine WMP would be the CF. His D is bad but in CF he was decent. Just aslong as he's not in RF.

Murphy is another option as a stop gap for Ellsbury, but he's been rumored to be heading to the Marlins for some BP help( which I think is smart).

Here's Hollins page at bb-ref: Hollins' Stats

He's really just a 4th OF. But, he can play every OF position. He's got some power (~.180 IsoD the last two years). He can run a little. And, he's a RH pull hitter so Fenway could help him a bit. He's interesting because he will cost nothing, but I'm not jazzed about him being the starting CF.

I wouldnt be jazzed about it either, but he does have 1 yr stopgap tattoed on his forehead. If you could package Coco with maybe Wily Mo and nab a decent closer, then he could be a decent gamble for one season.

eeek.... Id rather them play WMP in CF. Then you have Hinske as the 4th OF/3B/1B.

That SOB has to learn to catch a flyball sometime:D

Well if it takes both Coco and WMP to get a decent closer then ya I guess bring him in as a stop gap, but we better be getting the likes of Cordero for both of them. Gonzalez will only take one and mabye a low level prospect.

WMP in CF will kill the red sox. At least you can somewhat hide him in the corner OF, but imagine him playing in yankee stadium with Manny being Manny in LF and a shot hit into the gap. He is a terrible outfielder. Putting him in CF next to another terrible OFer and a guy who may only play 100 games is not good business for a team that stresses defense as important.

um Wily Mo was much better in center for the Sox. This past season he was having more adventures when playing left & right field' date=' he wasnt actually hidden[/quote']

do you think it could just be due to small sample size?

This is flat out wrong. He plays CF much more cleanly than the corners. He will be a below average CF, but it wouldn't kill the team.
