this is absolutely ridiculous. Wallace I can understand' date=' but what in gods name did Jackson do to get fired?[/quote']

Boston was 10th in runs and 16th in batting this season. That is why. Not to mention alot of players did not like him as well.

Who didn't like him? I eman I geuss stats show we can be a much betetr offensive team' date=' but just wonderin[/quote']

Still... the 1st half of the season, the Sox were ranking in the top 5 for batting avg, runs scored, extra base hits. The second half was a different story as missing considerable time were Ortiz, Manny, Trot, Tek, Wily Mo Pena, Gonzalez, Coco Crisp. Papa Jack couldnt stop the injuries from happening. He was the scapegoat

Jackson sends letter to Red Sox fans

Dismissed hitting coach hopes to stay in baseball

BOSTON -- Dismissed Red Sox batting coach Ron Jackson has sent a letter to the team, its players and fans. Speaking by phone Monday night, Jackson, who was officially dismissed along with pitching coach Dave Wallace earlier in the day, said he hopes to return to the game "and doing what I love to do, which is teaching the art of hitting." Jackson handled being replaced with his usual dignity.

"I'm not here to blame anybody," he said. "We're hired to be fired. I'm disappointed, yes I am. I wouldn't be human if I wasn't disappointed." He also read the letter, which he later sent via e-mail.

---I want to thank the Red Sox and all the fans of this great team. I will always be able to cherish being a part of Boston's long road back to the World Series, and I loved watching the development and the hard work of the players during my time here in Boston.

During my tenure here in Boston, I was proud to be part of one of the most explosive offenses in baseball and Red Sox history. I am happy to say I was part of that. One of the most memorable things in Boston for me was working with the world-class hitters on this club, especially David Ortiz. Working with David and watching him train every day to develop into the player that he is today is something I will remember forever.

I am sure that Terry's decision to move in a different direction without me is part of the logical plan to help the team get back on track to another World Series which the fans, the guys on the team, and the whole organization deserve.

Boston is a great sports city, and I have every confidence the ownership and management will create a combination of players that will work together to win again.

Thank you for sharing some of these important memories in life with me over the past four seasons.

I will miss you all.

Ron "Papa Jack" Jackson---

There was a P.S.: "I want to make sure Tom Brady knows that, although I'm no longer with the Red Sox, I'll always be his personal hitting coach and he can come take BP with me any time."

Jackson said Brady, the Patriots quarterback who has taken batting practice with the Sox, "tells everybody I'm his batting coach. It's funny."

Jackson defended the job he did by pointing to the number of injuries endured by his hitters this year.

"Everything went south on us," he said. "Check the stats -- we were hitting .284 in the first half of the season and then we got hurt. When you put players out there that are role players ... I talked to a few of those players and they said, 'My body's killing me.' I'm not trying to down-rate our bench or down-rate our players, but one time we had two players on the bench -- [Gabe] Kapler and [Alex] Cora. We had more pitchers on the roster than we had players.

"Just look at the guys we lost -- David Ortiz for 10 days, Manny Ramirez, [Jason] Varitek, [Trot] Nixon, Coco Crisp was hurt. It goes on and on."

He said he will take some time to be with his family and ultimately hopes to return to the game he loves.

This is s***... Our offense was historic for 3 years 03-05. Papa Jack had a lot to do with that. This is so stupid, if anybody should be fired it should be Tito. He is a horrible manager who had 1 good month in 04. He makes countless in game errors and refuses to change his thinking, even if something is so obvious (the countless times he kept going to Timlin is just one many). f*** you Tito and Theo.

I don't f***ing get it. I have supported this FO and Tito at nearly every turn since they took over. I'm impressed by a team that can win almost 95 games for three straight seasons. I'm impressed by a team that consistently sends 3+ guys to the all-star game, a team that scores 900+ runs for three straight seasons. All I've heard about Jackson, nearly every single time they show him on TV or discuss him in the booth, they talk about how great he is. They discuss how he "turned this team around" or "he had a lot to do with the development of Ortiz", I never heard anyone complain about him. His nickname was Papa Jack, for crying out loud. Who fires a "Papa Jack".

Seriously, though, I don't know what they're doing. What are they hoping to get now? Is Ted Williams reincarnated as a hitting coach or something?

Does the FO believe that Jackson could have gotten more from his players than he did this season? If so then how can they also discuss the injuries as being the main problem? Is he somehow involved in the Manny saga (i.e., publically defending the man-ram)? I just don't get it. Is there a hitting coach that will allow them to sign someone in particular or did they disagree with his hitting philosophy (which, apparently, was 'score 900+ runs this year')? How could you disagree with that?

I don't know. He seemed like a good guy. He couldn't have wanted/been owned that much money and he was important in turning that team around.

John Farrell, a 44-year-old who pitched eight seasons in the major leagues, is expected to be named Red Sox pitching coach.

Farrell was a teammate of Terry Francona one season in Cleveland. He'll take over for Dave Wallace. Former Met and Padres hitting coach, Dave Magadan, is also rumored to be taking over for Ron Jackson as hitting coach.

A lot of changes could be done in the coaching system, not just our Papa Jack. Also for listeners of WEEI Sox games, Jerry Trupiano & Joe Castiglione's contract is all set to not be renewed

Good.

... sounds like a well thought hiring.

"So lets see what friends do I have that know how to pitch ... "

Come on guys.

I was thinking the exact same thing, all of the new coaches are turning out to be former teammates or coaches alongside Tito.

Who cares? Hitting coaches...who cares? GEt good coaches for the kids in the minors. WTF could Papa Jack tell Manny about hitting. Let's get real.

That's a joke right?

He seemed to do a lot for Ortiz.

I think hitting coaches are overrated. I'm not saying that he wasn't a good coach. I just think hitting coaches are not indispensable.

Agreed.

I think Papa Jack gets too much credit for what Ortiz did. Ortiz has always said that the Twins had him confined to one hitting style, once he was released he was able to hit naturally.

From what I've read, they basically just gave Papi the green-light and told him to swing away. And, if you are going to give him credit there, then he gets some blame for Nixon's loss of power, Tek falling apart, and the poor stretch run by several players the last two years. Do I think that blame is solely his? No, the players are accountable for what they do. Both good and bad. Ultimately, I agree with 700, the role of hitting/pitching coaches is minimal.
