Bill Simmons and ESPN pose an interesting question.

Simmons Column

I know Bird won more rings, but Papi's was as Simmons says, more significant. In terms of clutch, it is Papi, in terms of overall greatness, I'm taking Bird for now.

Thoughts?

Basketball is more of a team sport. Nobody can deny the greatness of Bird, but he also was part of the greatest basketball dynasty in the 80's. I wont argue that Bird was not clutch, but what David Ortiz does is amazing. Either way, we were lucky enough to have them both in Boston.

In terms of greatness, anything Ortiz does in his career will not compare to what Bird did in his, Bird was one of the greatest basketball players ever, Ortiz is not one of the greatest baseball players ever. I think Ortiz may slow down because of his body type, weight and bad knees but when its all said and done, he may be looked at as one of the top power hitters in the game, but certainly not one of the best all around ballplayers ever.

Ortiz is having himself a nice little ride, and he will never be forgotten, but I cant yet compare him to Bird.
