Well he's definatly not worthless. He'll have an awesome first half of the year no matter where he pitches, but the 2nd half of the season will be a struggle. It's his MO ... it's not like last year was his first 2nd half collapse.

Eh, maybe he's changed.

If we could have a solid Clemment with a healthy Bekcett and Schilling, that's a pretty nasty staff.

aah, and in Wells, Wak, Bronson, Paps, I'd say we're stacked.

yeah, I'm excited about our staff. If our guys are healthy, it's among the best in the league for sure.

Just an idea, but could we never call Papelbon 'Paps' again? Everyone is doing it and it makes me think of a papshmear.

I think that the best thing for the sox would be to deal clement and let Paps (sorry ksushi) have that starting spot. Shill seems to be on the Paps for starter bandwagon. I say let Paps start this year while Shill can be a mentor to him. If we can't do it soon, then let Clement start (if we put him in the pen his value is gone) and try to move him before the deadline!

That's my $.02

As it stands right now, the only scenario with Papelbon in the bullpen is if Foulke can't regain his form. They won't have him just be a reliever, he will pitch regularly or he will go to AAA, and he won't go to AAA. Its either closer or starter. The rotation right now is Schilling Beckett Wells Papelbon and Clement with both arroyo and wake in the pen, i think thats how Edes layed it out, and he said he believes clement will be dealt before opening day, or Wells will be dealt.

sorry but Wake will be in the rotation this season, it wouldve been reported by now. Plus they wouldnt have these catcher tryouts to be Wake's new personal catcher. here's edes mailbag question I think you were referring to

Hey, Larry, thanks for the good word, but I hope you were reading Chris Snow, myself, Nick Cafardo and our columnists on Boston.com over the winter -- we try to keep people up to date. Here's my guess on the staff. I think they'll take 11 to open the season, with two off-days right off the bat. Starters (5): Curt Schilling, David Wells, Josh Beckett, Tim Wakefield, Jonathan Papelbon. Bullpen (6): Keith Foulke, Mike Timlin, Julian Tavarez, Rudy Seanez, Bronson Arroyo, David Riske. Traded: Matt Clement. There are things that could cause this to change in the next couple of weeks. If Foulke doesn't reclaim his closer role, Arroyo slips back into the No. 5 hole and Papelbon becomes closer. The Sox could deal either Arroyo or Wells, too, depending on the offers they get. But I definitely think they'll deal a starter.

sorry i made a mistake, ill be sure to punish myself accordingly. the point was, every indication is that papelbon will be in the rotation. I didn't mean to make a mistake, sir. Please find it in your heart of hearts to forgive this idiot.

sorry i just thought it was common fact that Wake is going to be in the rotation for 06, not the pen, hence the search for his new personal catcher. Francona is also said to pencil him in as the #2 starter. I just believe Papelbon wont get the spot he deserves unless Wells, Clement (most likely now) or Arroyo gets dealt.

He will one way or another be in the rotation. What are the wells options? I personally don't like wells, I think hes a distraction and a lard ass. Does anyone know how one would go about... say DFAing the fat man? Eh?
Posted
I agree, just because Wells says he will stay, I could very easily see him getting disgruntled and being a distraction. Plus he will only be around this year. With so many other starters, I think that we should still try and deal him (we don't even need to get much for him, just send him to the National League where he can't hurt us)

I still think that the whole Wells "i'm happy now and want to stay" routine was more of a pr bump to make it easier for the sox to deal him without getting nothing back. It doesn't make sense for him to go from "not pitching and grumpy" to "happy and want to stay" all of a sudden. I don't see him staying the whole year. Something has to change and I think either/or clement /wells is gone. I would personally like to see the sox keep Arroyo; he's versitle, has a rubber arm, cheap, and he loves playing in Boston (which isn't that common)

So come on Theo; roll the fat man out of town and let's get down to baseball!

I honestly belive that Matt Clement will be a much better pitcher for the Red Sox this year. It was his first year with the team and he did pitch well in the first half. I think he will do a complete 180 and be one of the Sox best pitchers.

I would be happy to keep clement and dump wells. We all know that wells doesn't want to be here and clement does. I think that the ball off the melon last year really affected him more than he's letting on, and that attributed to the decline in the 2nd half. I would be happy with a rotation of:

Shill

Wake

Beckett

Clement

Paps

I guess we will see what happens!

I'd rather keep wells than clement because wells is a better pitcher than clement and if the Red Sox have the opportunity to get rid of clement and his contract they need to do it.

Clement is a mental gidget. It's all in his head but if he hits a stride early in the seaon, and gets all the "I can't pitch in the second half' crap out of his head he could win 17-19 games.

Clements contract is not bad at all... thats part of his value. He is decent pitching for not a lot of money compared to what he would have gotten on the market.
