The Braves have lost out on reliever Rudy Seanez to the Boston Red Sox. BravesCenter's Bill Shanks has more.

The Boston Red Sox have agreed to a contract with free agent reliever Rudy Seanez.

Pending a physical on Tuesday, Seanez will sign a $1.9 million dollar contract with the Red Sox for the 2006 season. Boston will also have a team option for 2007 that could turn into a player option with numerous performance escalators.

Seanez spent the 2005 season with the San Diego Padres, pitching in 57 games. The 37-year-old went 7-1 with an ERA of 2.69, 49 hits in 60.1 innings pitched, 22 walks, and 84 strikeouts.

The Braves had been interested in bringing back Seanez, who pitched with the team from 1998-2000 and again late in the 2001 season. This will be Seanez's second stint in Boston. He pitched with the Red Sox in 2003.

I don't expect him to put up the numbers he put up last year, but even 3/4 of those numbers would be great. We needed a power arm who can K people. We have kids that can in Hansen and Delcarmen, but Mota and Seanez have some track record of success.

If you look at his stats though, for when he hasnt ahd an ERA under 4, theyve all been low IP totals, the highest being 33 innings. All in all I think he's a good short-term addition to the pen to warm the spot for Hansen/Delcarmen. In a few short years, we may have 4 home-grown star pitchers here, evnly distrubted between the rotation and pen. It's exciting times down on the farm.
