Boomer ready to take charge

Detroit (62-65) at Boston (73-54), 2:05 p.m. ET

Nobody relishes the challenge of being a stopper more than Red Sox left-hander David Wells, and the veteran will get that chance on Sunday afternoon when he attempts to cool off the blazing bats of the Tigers.

Wells will try to erase the sour taste of Saturday night, when the Red Sox squandered a 6-0 lead en route to a 12-8 loss that ended Boston's 14-game winning streak at Fenway Park.

The Red Sox lead the Yankees by just 1 1/2 games in the American League East. The Tigers will counter with lefty Nate Robertson.

Wells also has a personal score to settle with the Tigers, who tattooed him for 12 hits and six runs on Aug. 17.

Pitching matchup

DET: LHP Nate Robertson

• 6-10, 3.85 ERA in 2005

• 0-0, 2.45 ERA vs. BOS in 2005

BOS: LHP David Wells

• 10-6, 4.53 ERA in 2005

• 0-1, 13.50 ERA vs. DET in 2005

Player to watch

Shortstop Edgar Renteria continues to sizzle for the Sox, belting 13 hits in his last 28 at-bats.

Quotable

"We have to get our pitching together and come out and do what everybody knows we can do. We can't go to October pitching that way. October is a whole different game." -- Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz

Quick hits

Trot Nixon is 7-for-16 against the Tigers this season. ... Bill Mueller is hitting .357 during his 10-game hitting streak. ... Roberto Petagine is 7-for-15 in his last five starts.

Wells has to go at least 7 innings and hopefully the bats can smack at least 10 runs across the plate. With a lefty on the mound for the Tigers we'll see Millar at first, and probably no Trot in the lineup.

This is a BIG game for the sox. They must win today, you can't lose two straight series to non contending teams, I think Wells will be up to the challenge today, GO SOX!!

I don't care if Rent shoulda been there, that throw was offline the whole way. It was to the left side of the plate and Tony G would have had him if the ball was on target. That's the last straw for me, even though I've had many of them in the past with Millar. He needs to leave. Just right now. GODDAMN IT.
