I was just wondering with now how Curt is pitching as the starter, and has still another season left on his contract. Wells has been signed for 2 seasons, but has indicated there is a small chance he could retire end of 2005. Wakefield's contract has been extended for 3 more seasons, while Clement signed a deal that would keep him in Boston for 3 seasons with a club deal for 2008. any thoughts on what 2006 starting pitching will be like? :dunno:

It's really gonna depend on what happens the rest of this season and in the spring. There are just far too many variables. Right now, considering Papelbon should be a starter next year, there are atleast 6 people fighting for 5 spots. Schilling, Wells, Hammer, Wake, Miller, Papelbon. I'm pretty sure we have an option on Miller next year, and since thats when he will be 100% I can't see the Sox just letting him walk. Wells may retire at the end of the year, but the way this season is going I can't see that happening. It's just too hard to say right now.

Schilling (doctors have said all along that it would take 12-16 months to fully recover)

Papelbon

Clement

Wake

Boomer/Milller (Wells if he doesn't retire, Miller if he does)

BP

Arroyo - M/L relief

Gonzalez - M/L relief

Delcarmen - Middle relief

Hansen - Set up

Foulke - Closer

I don't see Timlin being resigned if Hansen is going to be groomed as the closer. That could change if they intend to work on a 3rd pitch and convert Hansen to a starter.

Myers and Bradford are very good in situational relief, but having two guys on the roster that fit that billing seems excessive. I would expect 1 to stay, but not both.

Even if Myers stays, the Sox still need to either pick up or bring up a lefty for the BP.

If there are available SP out there when the season is over who have become FA (I don't really know who will be or how many candidates there will be, just throwing out the idea) I'm sure Theo will try to upgrade some of your guys, especially if they don't perform well down the stretch/in the post-season. Papelbon=the Red Sox version of Wang, but healthy. I think he is gonna become a staple of the rotation for a few years.

what about burnett, I know that theo is going to make a hard run at him.

Baltimore needs pitching too, badly, and his wife is from the Baltimore area. Yes, we will make him an offer, but it won't be as large as the Yankee's or have secondary motivation like the O's.

I would like the see Arroyo traded for a 1B. He's relatively young and cheap and we could probably swing him for a solid hitting 1B without wasting a lot of money on Konerko. Then we can trot this rotation out:

Schilling

Clement

Wells

Wake

Papelbon

...with Sanchez, Lester and Alvarez waiting in the wings should one of the old guys falter or end up disabled, which will likely happen once or twice before the end of the year.

Another thing about AJ Burnett. Whoever signs him will be giving up a first round draft pick. Theo and Bill are big on early round draft picks, so I think they will be reluctant to fork out all the money he'll command and give up a first round pick. I would also expect that mentality to allow Mueller (Youk to replace him) and Timlin (Hansen and Delcarmen to replace) to go as well. Both will probably net the Sox picks in the first 3 rounds. Theo wants to build a very deep farm system, and these moves would go a long way to doing that.

Ilike the sound of Schilling, Clement, Boomer (pending), Wake, and Paplbon. Trade Aroyo for a first basemen call up Hansen to be a second Set up man to give Timlin some days off.

Our pitching should be fine.
