Patriots acquire new wide receiver in trade with Romeo Crennel's Browns

Wide receiver Andre' Davis was traded to the New England Patriots by the Cleveland Browns for an undisclosed draft pick Monday.

Davis, who has been mentioned in trade talks for several months, became expendable after the Browns drafted rookie Braylon Edwards, and Antonio Bryant and Dennis Northcutt both emerged during training camp. Davis had also lost his job as the club's No. 1 kick returner to rookie Joshua Cribbs. The 26-year-old Davis was already in New England when the Patriots announced the deal.

Last week, the Browns gave Davis and his agent, Kennard McGuire, permission to seek a trade. The Philadelphia Eagles and Seattle Seahawks also expressed interest in Davis. McGuire didn't immediately return a phone message. Davis was selected in the second round (No. 47 overall) of the 2002 draft by former Browns coach Butch Davis, who thought the former Virginia Tech track star's speed would open things up for Cleveland's offense. However, injuries have slowed Davis' development. Because of a nagging toe injury, he started only seven games and had 16 receptions for 416 yards and two touchdowns last season. One of those TDs was a 99-yarder from Jeff Garcia, the longest pass play in Browns history.

Davis' days seemed numbered in Cleveland when first-year Browns coach Romeo Crennel said the 6-foot-1, 195-pounder was having ``an average camp.'' Davis, who is eligible for free agency next year, got off to a strong start as a rookie with Cleveland. He scored a TD in his first three games, becoming just the sixth rookie since 1970 to begin his career that way. In 2003, Davis had 40 catches for 576 yards and five TDs. His acquisition raises some health questions about the team’s current personnel at receiver. Free-agent signee David Terrell and second-year man P.K. Sam haven’t played in the team’s first two preseason games. Meanwhile, Bethel Johnson (left foot/ankle) remains on the physically unable to perform list.

So the acquisition of Davis means that either Dwight, Brown or Terrell will probably be cut sometime in the near future. I think that Davis has a very good chance of winning the 3rd WR spot.

Tim Dwight has performed great in his preaseason games with the Pats so far doing good in returns and receptions same as Troy Brown. David Terrell hasnt appeared yet for the Pats, and Bethel Johnson is still on the injured list, and PK Sam though healthy hasnt appeared as of yet.

Davis hasn't done anything yet, and he's got only 2 games to do it. Remember, this is the NFL, it doesn't cost squat to look at a player. You bring him in take a look see, and if he sucks he's gone. He' not bad, you shuffle between special teams, DL, practice squad.

Andre Davis is a solid WR, but didn't get a lot of attention because he was stuck on the Browns. He's definitely not a bad WR, and he's got the hands/speed to show. He'll be #2 or 3 on the depth chart, and expect some big yards out of him now that he's got a good club to work with.
