Haha the kid, Alex Smith, San Franciscojust drafted #1 decided to sign him to a 6 year $60 million contract before his feet touched ground on a pro-football field, $20 million of that is guaranteed whatever happens. As with all top quarterback picks, he could become the next Steve Young or the next Jeff Garcia

Aug 14 Rookie quarterback Alex Smith took his first snap as a pro on Saturday when the 49ers hosted the Raiders in preseason action. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2005 draft completed three-of-nine passes for 25 yards in two quarters of play. Smith was relieved by incumbent starter Tim Rattay after halftime.

Views: Smith spent most of the night dodging opposing pass-rushers who had little trouble getting by the makeshift offensive line the Niners pieced together. The unit was missing three projected starters and also struggled to open holes for running back Kevan Barlow. The Niners offensive line was so bad that washed up defensive lineman Warren Sapp managed to log a sack and batted down a pass on back-to-back plays.

Mat Cassell, a 7th round pick by the Pats, had different results in his first start; completing 13 of 21 passes for 135 yards including a touchdown.

Matt Cassell was playing for the best team in football. Smith had a, and I quote, "makeshift offensive line" in front of him.

Guys, for a 7th round pick Matt Cassel is very good. Im not saying this just because he played well the other night, which is what I had expected him to do. He was a great QB coming out of high school but was stuck behind first overall pick Carson Palmer, and undoubtedly the best college QB in the country Matt Leinart. I am sure if he was given a chance to throw more than 34 (I think thats the number I saw the other day, not 100%) passes in his college career, he would have been drafted a lot higher.
