Well, Calvnhobs6 and I had a hankerin' for some baseball today. Alas, it was an offday, and none was to be had at the major league level. So we hopped on 95 south to Brockton, paid our 8 bucks for Box seats, and watched Oil Can Boyd get the win for the Rox against the Elmira something or others. Good times were had by all.

Here you can see the beautiful field and stadium down in Brockton. Also, you can get an idea about how sweet the seats are for $8.

The team poses for a nice photo. They were wearing Bad News Bears jerseys as part of the "Bad News Bears come to Brockton" promotion. More on that later.

As part of the promotion, the actors from the original movie who played the pitcher and the catcher were listed as the starting pitcher and catcher, and faced the first batter of the game. He walked on 5 pitches, but the pitcher was the SHORTEST human being I have ever seen in my entire life. Here, you can see him being dwarfed by the mound.

When the manager came to take him out he turned his back on him. What a temper this guy has!

One of the many on-field stupid promotions they had during the game.

If you're ever going to a game again, I live about 5 minutes away from Brockton. Haven't been since last year.

A guy got stabbed on Main St. in Brockton, ran through back roads and through some yards, and ended up collapsing dead in this lady's back yard. It was 5 feet from my brother's side yard. Actually not that bad a neighborhood.

It's actually really fun. It's nice to go to a baseball game justs to enjoy it and not really care about the outcome. How long has the team been around?

And Brockton is South a ways from Boston, just off of 24, BigPapiEnFuego.

I think 2002. The land that Campanelli Stadium is on used to be a bit of swamp land and there were tennis courts, an extension of the Brockton High sports facilities (no, they didn't have swamp swimming).

Brockton is paradise for Oil Can Boyd. If he runs out of crack, he can score another rock in between innings.

Why do you think they call them the "ROX"?

Yes, Brockton SUCKS. On a typical two-block walk from my house to the corner store, I average two panhandlers, two drug offers, one drunk driver up onto the sidewalk at about 40 mph, and a scuzzy hooker proposition every 2nd or 3rd trip.

Just about two weeks ago, some teenage punk unloaded the clip of a handgun at some young girl (about 15 years old) in broad daylight, and in full view of a policeman standing across the street. He was only about 6 feet away from her, and he was so drugged out that he missed her with all 6 shots.

This town is an absolute shithole.

Rox tribute in honor of Snelgrove tomorrow

Media internship will carry her name

By Emily Sweeney, Globe Staff | August 18, 2005

The Brockton Rox will rename its media internship position in memory of Victoria Snelgrove, the 21-year-old East Bridgewater woman who was fatally injured by a pepper pellet fired by police during a Red Sox pennant victory celebration in October.

The club sees it as a fitting tribute to the girl known as ''Torie," a devoted baseball fan who studied journalism at Emerson College in Boston, and dreamed of pursuing a career in broadcast media.

Snelgrove's family is scheduled to appear at a news conference before the ceremony to discuss the details of the Rox internship as well as an Oct. 29 event to benefit the Victoria Snelgrove Memorial Fund.

Brockton Rox president Jim Lucas said he wanted to do something in Snelgrove's honor, but he wasn't sure what would be appropriate. Andrew Crossley, the Rox assistant general manager, suggested the internship dedication.

Then, a few months ago, Bob Kinsella entered the picture. A Rox season-ticket holder and veteran fund-raiser for local causes, Kinsella was acquainted with the Snelgrove family. His sister, Sarah ''Sally" Dow, has known Victoria Snelgrove's mother, Dianne, ever since they attended first grade together in Brockton.

Kinsella approached Lucas to see if the Rox could donate something for the October fund-raiser, and perhaps do something special in Snelgrove's memory.

''I said, 'Absolutely!' I had always wanted to," Lucas recalled.

So Kinsella arranged a meeting involving his sister, Lucas, and Rick and Dianne Snelgrove, and Lucas asked if the Rox could rename the club's internship in memory of their daughter.

''To me, it was the perfect gesture," said Lucas. ''We met with Snelgroves and I gotta tell ya, we . . . left that meeting in tears."

The Brockton Rox offers a paid internship position that lasts from January to September, and is open to ''any human being with a passion for baseball and media," said Lucas. Interns write press releases and host pre- and post-game radio shows on WBET (1460 AM) in Brockton. Applications for the Snelgrove internship will be available on the Rox website, http://www.brocktonrox.com.

The first recipient of the Snelgrove Award and internship is Jesse Goldberg-Strassler, a 23-year-old aspiring sportscaster from Washington, D.C.

The Snelgroves have been avoiding media interviews since their daughter's death, a tragedy that made headlines last October and months afterward. In May, Boston officials announced the city would pay $5 million to the Snelgrove family, the largest wrongful death settlement in its history.

Dianne Snelgrove was happy to talk about the Rox internship honoring her daughter.

''This is something they're going to do every year," said Snelgrove.

''Anything anybody does in my daughter's name is something great . . . you know, we're trying to keep her memory alive. . . . We're doing scholarships for a local high school, and we're doing anything we can to keep her out there, and work with the community."

The Snelgrove family launched a website, http://www.victoriasnelgrove.org, and established the Victoria Snelgrove Memorial Fund, which provides scholarships to students at East Bridgewater High School and Emerson College.

Torie never went to a Rox game, due to her busy school schedule, but ''she wanted to go," recalled her mother. ''We really appreciate what they're doing."

Dianne Snelgrove said she is looking forward to attending tomorrow night's game.

''I wouldn't miss this."
