Winner

5. Boston Red Sox

As usual, the signal-to-noise ratio in the Hub City was quite low. Manny Ramirez is still a member of the Red Sox, but Theo Epstein and company did make a solid, if non-headline-grabbing, addition in Jose Cruz Jr. Cruz will provide Boston with some sock from the left side while Trot Nixon is on the DL, and after Nixon returns Cruz will become one of the better fourth outfielders around. His batting average is woefully low, but his patience at the plate and reasonable power numbers make him a useful player. Almost as important, by nabbing Cruz the Sox eliminated one of the Yankees' scant deadline centerfield options.

Loser

2. New York Yankees

The Yankee lineup, now that Jason Giambi is raking and Tony Womack is receiving playing time in pinch-runner doses, is fearsome. The rotation, which is still weak, at least has enough arms to afford the team a "let God sort 'em out" approach the rest of the way. But what about the defense? The Yanks pared their nails through the deadline, and now they're still without a legitimate center fielder.

There's a stat called defensive efficiency rating (DER), which measures what percentage of balls in play a team defense converts into outs. Anyhow, the Yanks this season rank 27th in the majors in DER (only the Reds, Royals and Rockies have been worse), and part of the problem is that they've been making do in center with a menagerie of left fielders, DHs and infielders. Jose Cruz Jr., Larry Bigbie, Eric Byrnes and Randy Winn all changed hands leading up to the deadline. Where were the Yankees?

Sorry, but Dayn Perry is the biggest anti-yankee sox loving writer on earth. Fox stays true it it's biased reputation with this dumbass.

Red sox are winners for signing the second coming of Ted Williams apparently, Jose Cruz Jr. He's a platoon player AT BEST. And he makes him out to be the greatest thing since sliced bread. Did the sox address the bullpen need at all? Nope, but they're the sox so they're winners.

Someone tell me how when both teams don't help what they need, the yankees are still the losers? If you don't think this guy is a biased yankee hating sox fan, you're out of your mind.

You guys use this argument for EVERYTHING that portrays you in a bad light. "Waaaaahhhh, he's a SOX fan, THAT's why!"

since when was sliced bread ever so great?

i agree about cruz, but he's just platooning with Kapler (who did a fine job when nixon was out last year), until nixon gets back in september.

I trust that theo and tito know what they are doing.

last time I checked the yankees bullpen isnt that great, and your best CF option is bernie whos what like 40 years old, don't forget about Bubba and Melky. is your SP saga over now too.

you would of picked up cruz if we didn't.

Yeah, I agree with you. Sometimes I don't see it, but Dayn Perry is the worst one I've seen in awhile as far as anti-yankee. This stupid article here is just another example.

Do you think he knows that he's lying, or he actually believes this???

and you addressed your lights out bullpen over the deadline how? The teams are neutral. Neither are losers or winners becuse both didn't do anything to help their team or downgrade it. Dayn Perry is just an idiot and had to put the yankees in the loser's column anyway possible. Absolutlely no other analysts have labeled them as losers.

Did you actually read what he had to say? He made some valid points. And he was far from saying your team sucks. He may have overvalued Cruz, I'll give you that, but I see nothing wrong with the other things he had to say.

Peter Gammons said so on ESPN News, that the Yankees failure to adress the bullpen will hurt their chances to win in September/October. But the greatest sportswriter in the history of baseball is a Red Sux fan, right? So his opinion means nothing to you.

An idiot who had his brains scooped out, could realize that Nomo, Embree, and Small won't adress the bullpen issue or the starting rotation.

they asked for Duncan...we turned them down. We offered Shelly Duncan and a few other guys (dont know for sure who). It wouldnt have been a bad deal at all, and besides, he wanted to come here in the offseason.
