This would not be part of the "manny mega-deal"

Separate deal for Huff maybe possible

The three-way deal that would have landed Huff in Boston appears to be off, but the Red Sox and Devil Rays are continuing negotiations on a separate deal for Huff, according to the Globe's Gordon Edes. The Sox are seeking a lefthanded hitter like Huff because Trot Nixon might be out for an extended period with a strained oblique muscle. The Chicago White Sox also were believed to be pursuing both Huff and closer Danys Baez. Considered Tampa Bay's best hitter, Huff got off to a slow start but is heating up with the weather. He's currently hitting .266 with 12 homers and 59 RBIs. The 28-year-old Huff's best season came in 2003, when he hit .311 with 34 homers and 107 RBIs. The Globe's Gordon Edes thinks Huff's swing lends itself to using the Monster at Fenway Park. "Any place that wants me intrigues me," Huff told the Tampa Tribune. "I guess when you get traded for, it's a compliment. Somebody wants you. So, whatever team it is, who knows? It's Boston now. It could be somebody else the next night or somebody else the next minute. Who knows? There's a lot of stuff flying around, but you can't really pay attention to it, because last year at this time there was rumors with me, too, and I'm still here."

I would welcome this guy if it wasn't at the expense of manny

Was this written before or after the Cruz deal?

Huff would be nice, but Tampa will ask for too much in my opinion. I don't think we should trade any of our Big 3 pitching prospects, Pedroia, or Hanley. In the three team deal the Ray's were asking for Hanley AND Lester.

on boston.com, Gordon Edes talking about how Sox are interested in bringing in Huff to possibly be the new 1st baseman, as well as Paul Konerko could be in their sites when he becomes a free agent this offseason.

Do you think that the Red Sox could pursue Aubrey Huff either before the Aug. 31 deadline or in the offseason? He can play RF or 1B, two positions that the Sox have questions at. Maybe he can be a long term fix at first base, seeing that Millar will probably not be in Boston next year. If not Huff, who do you see as being the first basemen next year?

A: Dan, yes, I think the Sox have a good deal of interest in Huff -- he's relatively inexpensive ($6.75 million) -- but they're not going to give up two of their best prospects, if that's what it takes, in a waiver deal. But yes, I would expect that the Sox will try to interest the Rays in a deal this winter. Of the free agent options, Paul Konerko is the best, but the White Sox slugger will be commanding big bucks.

um im not even saying at all that manny and damon are both going to go at same time, im saying that they are both in question for 2006. like how damon's contract deals are still uncertain, and sox have always before tried to move manny in the offseason

but man lets just say Red Sox are able to wheel and deal to get Konerko in the mix as the starting 1st baseman, i mean how f***ing good would that be!! besides his defense, how would pitchers feel if expected in the lineup are the 3-4-5 hitters being Ortiz, Manny, and Konerko

I'd love to have either, Huff would most certainly be a major upgrade over Kevin Millar ( filling the potential duel roll ) and Konerko swings a great bat, hits in the clutch, and plays a pretty good 1st base.

I think I'd rather have Konerko come here. Tampa wants too much for Huff. Konerko will be a free agent and will only cost money not prospects.
