Maybe they just signed him long term because whoever they were trading for him would want him for a while? I doubt it though.

Well since the trade still hasn't officially been announced, maybe the A's will back out of it. Or perhaps it might get reshuffled to include a third team that would eventually get Payton. Or maybe they just want to keep Payton as a backup despite his objections.

payton shouldve just kept his mouth shut and played through the season. i mean for a backup player he was doing good with an alright average, speed, and had 5 homeruns in the first half.. he knew thro and thru what he was signing into for the red sox

Yeah, but it's not like he signed on as a free agent. He was traded here from the Padres. I think he did a pretty good job acting professionally and the pressure just got to him. After all, he is in the middle of his career and if he's not playing, when he becomes a free agent he has no portfolio of work to shop himself around. It'd be different if he actually chose this situation or if he was late in his career like Olerud and had already made most of his money. How would you feel if your boss blocked your career because you never got an opportunity to show what you could do on a regular basis? You'd probably want to go someplace else
