Clement ( 2-0, 2.13 ) vs Lopez ( 2-1, 1.91 )

Redsox.com preview:

Matt Clement will try to give the Red Sox pitching staff a much-needed pick-me-up when he takes the hill Tuesday night against Baltimore's Rodrigo Lopez.

Starter David Wells and reliever Matt Mantei suffered foot injuries during Monday's 8-4 loss to Baltimore. Curt Schilling is still working his way back to full strength and right-hander Wade Miller is at least two rehab starts away from being activated to the Boston roster.

Tuesday's game is a rematch of the classic pitching duel last Thursday at Camden Yards, when Lopez allowed only one unearned run in eight stellar innings, just enough to give Clement the cushion he needed to earn his second win of 2005.

Clement was just as dominant, scattering eight hits, striking out seven and walking just one over eight innings as the Sox shutout the Birds, 1-0. Lopez enters the game fourth in the American League in ERA (1.91) while Clement (2.13) is fifth.

Since going four games over .500 (10-6) after Thursday's win, the Red Sox have dropped three of their last four and fallen two games behind the Orioles in the AL East.

Pitching matchup

BAL: RHP Rodrigo Lopez

• 2-1, 1.91 ERA in 2005

• 0-1, 0.00 ERA in 2005 vs. BOS

BOS: RHP Matt Clement

• 2-0, 2.13 ERA in 2005

• 1-0, 0.00 ERA in 2005 vs. BAL

Player to watch

Catcher Jason Varitek belted his fifth homer Monday and has now hit safely in 13 of his 17 games this year. In addition to the long balls, he is batting .328 (21-for-64) with two doubles, a triple and 10 RBIs.

Quotable

"Our pitching staff is pretty banged up. I said all along during Spring Training if we can stay healthy, we're going to be fine. But we have Schilling, he's not totally healthy, Wade Miller and now we have possibly Mantei and David Wells. That's definitely not good for us. Once again, we'll have to step up and try to get some wins and get those guys 100 percent." -- Sox center fielder Johnny Damon

Clement has been getting better and better- I expect great things from him tonight.

Well, now we can use Halama as a starter. HAHAAAAA, ehhhhhh.

So that sucks. Clement needs to step it up a bit tonite, RSN could really use the boost. Here's the confirmation of Wells' stuff:

BOSTON (AP) -- Red Sox left-hander David Wells could be sidelined for more than a month after spraining his right foot, Boston manager Terry Francona said Tuesday.

Wells will go on the 15-day disabled list because of the injury, sustained in Monday night's 8-4 loss to Baltimore.

The 41-year-old left-hander was hurt as he tried to field Javier Lopez's slow roller in the fourth inning. Wells hobbled back to the mound but remained in the game for five more batters before leaving.

Left-hander John Halama is to take Wells' spot in the rotation and start next Tuesday at Detroit. Lenny DiNardo will be recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket and replace Halama in the bullpen.

Wells (2-3) gave up six runs and eight hits in 3 2-3 innings Monday. He entered the game with a 15-inning scoreless string over his prior two starts, both Boston shutouts.

Welcome back Lenny.

Whats the time table on Clement's return? Maybe, if its soon enough, he can fill in the void left by Wells.

Time table for Clement is about 1 hour. ;) I assume you're talking about Miller though, I've heard conflicting reports. One report said he may be able to start Tuesday which was Wells' scheduled start. I've also heard that he would need 2 rehab starts, one being Thursday and the other being Tuesday. Halama would start Tuesday for the Sox.

Yea....now that you've quoted me there's no use editing it. I meant Miller, obviously. Thanks.

This is just like last year how we played at the end up April until July, always falling behind, having to dig ourselves out. Lopez is top notch so 1 run may be enough for the Orioles. Although I think we will squeak one or two out.

Very nice inning. Everything went according to plan...including Bellhorn's strikeout. If you didn't call that, you're being unrealistic.

Well I called double play, the strikeout turned out to be better though.B)

Yankees all over the Angels 10-3. A-Rod with a 3 home runs through the 4th inning. A 2 run homer, a 3 run homer and a grand slam. Only a solo home run away from the "home run cycle" It's never been done before.

Edit: If I bothered to check the 2nd page of this thread this info wouldn't have been needed.:dunno:

Props to Arod for being ridiculous tonite. 3-3 w/ 3 HR, a 2 run shot, a 3 run shot, and a grand slam, totalling 9 RBI. Very impressive.

Single handedly beating the LAAoA!!!! (except for the guys on base when he hit them)

It is 10-3.

Haha, wouldn't that be something.

Anyone now starting to worry about Foulke?

No. He started off a little rough last year, but he will get it together. As I said with Renteria. You cannot judge any player by 1 month.

11-8. Is that 8 unanswered Orioles runs? Embarrassing. Where's Scotty Williamson when you need him? I'd take him injured at this point. Foulke - you know you're in trouble when you're about to be replaced by Dinardo. What the f*** is going on?
