Foulke: "Selig wants robots with no personality"

Monday, July 05, 2004

Keith Foulke found it a bit ironic that Major League Baseball made him wear an American flag on the side of his cap yesterday, just one day after it was revealed that he had been mandated to remove his own smaller version of the Stars and Stripes.

In commemoration of Independence Day, Foulke and all members of the Red Sox and Atlanta Braves wore caps with the United States flag sewn on the side at Turner Field. Eight days earlier, the Boston closer took a far-less-visible replica of the flag off his cap rather than face a $1,000-a-day fine and a possible league suspension.

``Everyone is wearing it today and Sept. 11, but in my opinion it wasn't enough,'' said Foulke, whose father served in the Air Force and whose grandfathers were in the military. ``I'd have gladly paid a fine to wear it the rest of the year, but when they're talking about suspending me, I can't do that to my teammates.''

Foulke exchanged personal letters with commissioner Bud Selig to make his feelings known, but he was under a gag order (under the threat of a fine) on the matter. He decided to talk when the Associated Press obtained a copy of Selig's letter to him.

``Under the new labor agreement, we're all supposed to look like robots, with no personality,'' Foulke said. ``They're trying to make it like the NFL, but this sport is different than the others. We're individuals.''
