  1. If someone offered you $125 mil over 5 years to do a job would you feel you hit the lottery? What do players expect now? I worked my entire life in a high stress job that required a great deal of specialized education at my own time and expense and only earned a tiny fraction of that. I'll bet that the majority of posters have had similar experience. C'mon JD, what are you waiting for?
  2. I believe 5 years at $2Mil/Yr will get the job done. I believe the 2nd question also remains open. Do we use him as a DH or plan for him to take LF for a significan portion of the season, while trading jbj? That is a legitimate question ane may impact JD's decision process and also would have an impact on the final luxury tax salary limit and who else we can afford.
  3. I still believe our offer is a good one at 5 years, but should also include a time limit to allow us to go to plan B if Boras holds out for more years. It doesn't make sense to wait until the options become too limited. Give him til mid January and then move on. Sometimes the signing not made is the best in the long run.
  4. Maybe some would say that 5 years is a risk. I would for sure. How much money does someone need and how long does someone expect to play? At the end of 5 years JD would be rich beyond any of our beliefs and if he still can play if he wants to and can make the decision at that time. Cap it at 5 years.
  5. The question of value seems a little different to me. One year of Machado with his difference in offense and defense against Bogey longer term at less money plus another high level prospect. In that case I would lean toward Kimmi's assessment. A long term Machado against a long term Bogey with a top prospect is more of a balance.
  6. I worked as the main representative in technical negotiations and meetings with large Japanese firms, mainly in Tokyo. You needed to learn that a Yes answer did not mean Yes as we understand it, but yes they got the meaning of our point. So you not only have to listen carefully to what is being said, but also understand the culture of the person that is saying it. Agents, Lawyers and the like also have their own culture but as others have said, it centers on the best interests of their clients.
  7. We should offer based upon perceived value, not on what some other team is willing to offer. Meanwhile, life and the market moves on. There are stirrings out there with the Braves, with Hosmer and others. The realization is that waiting has risks.
  8. I would set that as the Red Sox limit and that has risk that he can be worth that much over 5 years.
  9. Good to hear, but the question remains, does it have an expiration date?
  10. At that price and with one prospect, I would pull the trigger although reluctantly due to the loss of JBJ's defense. One wonders if DD is active at all? Lets hope he has something in store for us.
  11. That is an excellent wish list but adds about $38 mil to the luxury cap line by my estimates. Could we afford it? We lose a top notch defensive outfielder, a high potential left hander and a couple of decent prospects in the deal but you do have to give something to get something in return. You know I am thinking Cole Brannen can help us up the middle in the futute. Late 2018 or 2019 if he shows he can hit, so that is a possible CF of the future. Travis and OcKimey are good but not great prospects.
  12. 5 Years would be my limit as well.
  13. Bruce, Nunez and a lefty reliever vs JD. Less years and the same or less money.
  14. We don't know the behind the scenes offers and negotiations going on and we just assume DD has made a sensible offer for JD and Boras is delaying the decision, trying to get more from Boston or from some other team. If we have offered $25 mil per year, it leaves us with very little flexibility to acquire other sought after pieces before they get taken by others. That's why I advocate attaching a deadline to our offer. Take it or leave it, and then move on. Nunez and a left handed reliever plus a big bat in the $6 mil region for one year and we have a complete team. I am sure there are other scenarios that would be attractive although JD best fills our need.
  15. Yes, he is an internal asset that miight be able to help us down the line. The problem is that you have to trade a valuable asset to get a valuable asset, so he is definitely trade material. If he is traded, let us hope that we get a player that can help us for a number of years. I see Chavis as a possible second baseman, not a first baseman. The lack of movement by the Sox is really troublesome and speaks to the probability that DD is all in on JD. I mentioned before that we construct an offer that is reasonable and set a drop dead date on it after which we go to plan B. if Boras wants to string teams along then we could wind up getting no one of value.
  16. Too late with Wade Davis going to the Rockies
  17. I dug this out of the Yahoo question and answer section: Catchers, even if they are good fielders, are used in the DH role (usually NL catchers DH during interleauge player). Here are some of last year's numbers: Starting Catcher, Games at C, (Total Games) Joe Mauer -- 139 -- (146) Russell Martin -- 149 -- (155) Brian McCann -- 138 -- (145) Jason Varitek -- 131 -- (131) Kurt Suzuki -- 141 -- (148) Nowadays, the average is probably between 120-150, around 130 mostly. Some guys have great durability, though. Randy Hundley caught 160 games in the 1968 season. Gary Carter caught over 135 games nine times. Remember, for last year's totals, there's 162 games in a season. Based on these numbers we could expect Vaz to catch between 900 and 1100 innings.
  18. Catchers have a tough position with many opportunities to get injured and also to wear down. best not to keep a catcher in without regular rests. Perhaps catching 2/3s of the time is a reasonable limit for your best catcher barring injuries which take him out for long periods.
  19. Call them the Vegas Odds and bring in Bobby Valentine to manage them. Can you imagine being pimped at the entrance to the stadium?
  20. I go to the official site of the red sox every day and see the same non-news postings. This certainly is a very slow off season. I believe most of us have similar opinions of the club needs going forward and sitting still is not a top option. Other than Moreland, we have not done much at all that has been benficial for the team this off season. Maybe DD will get something done. I have supported him but am beginning to wonder.
  21. Those are Machiavellian thoughts but fun to ponder. In reality, aren't the Marlins worth less after trading away so many of their best assets. I don't know if that is true, but if so Jeter would be losing money in the deal.
  22. If I was him I'd tell the hitters to avoid being predictable. By that I mean always taking the first pitch as some of our players we wont to do for much of the season is too predicable. If you get a good pitch early, go for it for goodness sakes. Just don't telegraph what you will do. Technical issues like the long looping swings can be discussed with the players. Maybe some can improve over last year. The effort needs to come from the player, without which I doubt if much can be accomplished.
  23. There is a risk for DD and the team to play the Boras's game for JD. At some point he may have to present a take it or leave it offer with a specific time limit and be ready to walk away. The alternative is to shore up 2nd base, add a less expensive power bat and use the remaining money for pitching. JD might then wind up taking less money and a shorter contract to play for a worse team. In any deal, you have to be willing to walk away.
  24. The Moreland move changed our ability to absorb a big bat like JD. Unless Hanley goes, which is highly unlikely, then JD would move to the outfield if we get him. That triggers a possible change with JBJ. I think most realize those implications, although may be reluctant to see JBJ go. If we don't reach agreement with JD, it would open up that money for a 2nd base strengthening, pitching and perhaps another big left handed bat to part time at DH. I guess it hinges on JD. Tough to be in this position with Boras holding the cards. You wonder when DD will walk away? The other issue is that signing JD may well tie our hands when some attractive FAs come up next year. I guess that is why DD gets the big bucks. Lets hope he earns them.
  25. One element of change not discussed by any here is the change in management and coaching. Of course they don't stand at the plate, but perhaps in emphasis they will have an impact. whether that is a positive or negative remains to be seen.
