  1. Good situational hitting by Devers, Bogie and JDM. chavis might shorten his swing with runners on 2nd and 3rd and one out, but he is young. We got lucky with Holt but he did force Cleveland to make a play and they didn't. 3 runs is a nice lead and with the Yankees losing tonight we stand to gain a game if we can play solid defense.
  2. His average is slipping of late and his strikeouts seem high but when I looked it was 7 in the last 7 days. Not good for a leadoff hitter but more than we would like certainly.
  3. Cross your fingers and JBJ has looked better this past week. Hope he can keep it up.
  4. The type of injury that he was being treated for sounded like wear. If it was a torn MCL or ACL that could have been repaired and he would be back playing by now.
  5. Pedroia was given an 8 year extension when he was 30. I am generally opposed to contracts over 5 years for a 30 year old. Whiie its true his initial OPS was still healthy, joint issues to knees where bone is on bone don't develop overnight. My belief is that the Sox missed or ignored the likely increasing degredation of Pedey as a player. The reality is that Pedey's value to the club was still acceptable for the first 3 years of the contract and has dropped to zero now. Probably lower than zero because his contract $'s diminish any chance of obtaining a suitable replacement at that position.
  6. If we take a realistic view of the season, it appears the Yankees will play .65 ball with the rest of the league and we need to match that. In addition, head to head, we need to win the two series in May and June enough to pick up a couple of games. Coming into July down by 4 1/2 games would not look like an insurmountable challenge. Clearly we cannot afford to lose further ground and expect to catch the Yankees. Even the Rays will be a stubborn obstacle for us making the playoffs.
  7. I agree. We are struggling with injures and illnesses to the starters. We were resting players at times, yet we still played well enough to come close and post a 1 for 3 record against the Astros. We have a ways to go but Price is coming right back and Eovaldi is also soon. It's not gloom and doom and we could well make a run at the top. we are in a bit of a hole but lets see how the next week plays out.
  8. The problem was giving a long term contract to Pedey when he was clearly on the downswing and had potential medical issues. They of course were magnified by the Machado slide. I hope the Sox will learn from this and avoid sentimentality when giving contracts.
  9. Yet another set back for Dustin yesterday. Soreness in his left knee seems to haunt him. The Red Sox made a bet that he could get back but so far it has been a pipe dream. Dustin has to be asking himself if it is time to retire, but the contract is still there and the money is too good to pass up.
  10. It was a bad night in the field but at least one good aspect is that JBJ did hit another ball very hard, and this time against a pitcher who has been getting just about everyone out. I'm crossing my fingers that the long awaited return of JBJ to the productive side of the offense may be underway. I don't expect miracles from him but if could slowly ascend to the 700 ops level it would help the club.
  11. The counter argument we have been hearing from some of the guru posters is that with such a strong lineup up front, we can afford to have a good fielding JBJ and an excellent defensive catcher hitting in the range of 150 with low OPS's. That puts a lot of pressure on our better hitters and presumes they too won't be in slumps for periods as Beni seems to be in now. We also find us carrying two other underperformers. Tough to be the better teams with a comprised offensive team.
  12. The Sox are not deep offensively, having to put 4 guys out there hitting below 200. While it looked to some they were heating up against the Blue Jay pitching, the Astros may disabuse us of that conclusion. What small amount of their play in Houston I had watched tonight leads me to believe they are tired and uninspired tonight.
  13. At least Chavis made hard contact.
  14. Sales slider is not biting as much as in his last game, but the defense looks lackluster or as others have typified it, pathetic. I also wonder about our lineup stacking up against the Astros. We have 4 bottom of the order hitters with BAs below 200. These 4 looked better against Toronto but Astros pitching may reveal that they haven't turned any corner just yet.
  15. I wouldn't characterize the budget sensitivity as self imposed. MLB have serious penalties associated with going over and staying over the competitive balance tax limit. We just need to make good choices and live within those reasonable constraints as the other teams are successfully doing. Best way to do that is to continually develop young players such as Beni, Devers and Chavis. It's also time that we see some of our young pitchers move forward. We are carrying Sandoval and Pedey this year without any value. Thats close to 15% of the budget. Lets hope we have learned, but I doubt it.
  16. Lots of people hit today. Lets see what happens against teams with better pitching. Be great if Bradley and Pearce round into form though.
  17. Somehow he got out of it while looking like Kimbrel, who often left us with a nervous attack. He managed to give one back and now we will have to fight to hang onto this one.
  18. It looks like its time to make a change. Maybe one of the younsters can come up and do bettter. Hard to do worse.
  19. I agree that the Sox have a plan for its young players and the cream will rise by its own performance. Getting into AA should be the goal and then a reassessment from there.
  20. Interesting kid and potential low cost CF replacement in the fold. Still has a long way to rise, but this is what was said this past week. Boston Red Sox prospect Jarren Duran has been named the Carolina League Player of the Week. The 22-year-old left-handed hitter went 12-for-27 with a homer, five doubles, eight RBIs and seven runs this past week. Duran is batting .406 with a .462 on-base percentage, .555 slugging percentage, 1.017 OPS, two homers, 11 doubles, three triples and 16 RBIs in 38 games (173 plate appearances). He’s 13-for-18 in stolen base attempts.
  21. Whe I saw the lineup today with Pearce, JBJ and Leon as our 7th, 8th and 9th hitters, I thought it would be our top 6 to provide any offense and that is a lot to ask. It turned out that our bottom third contributed today so overall se scored 12 runs. Toronto's pitching isn't much, but a win is a win. Chavis cntinues to impress.
  22. Here is a surprising stat. Of the regullar players with a significant number of plate appearances (I rule Nunez out of that list), who has struck out the most and who the least. The surprise is our leadoff hitter Beni has gone down 45 times. Equally surprising is that our catcher, Vazquez has only struck out 20 times. I wouldn't have guessed that at the beginning of the season.
  23. Most of us still believe the Sox have a solid chance for a wild card slot this year so want us to continue to put our strongest team forward and not start thinking of rebuillding. The move of Leon back and Hernandez down is a no brainer. Price should be back for Toronto and at that time sending Josh Smith down makes sense. I'm guessing Eovaldi comes back some time in early June and at that time possibly we lose Brewer. I'm wondering if briging Pedey back at all makes any sense. He appears to be fragile and is not likely to shake the rust off quickly. We have Chavis who while not a good fielding 2nd baseman is at least an acceptable hitter if not more and he is young and durable. Holt is another one of those fragile sorts that would take time to get up to speed and may not add more value than a Lin would. Bringing Johnson back is as a 6th pitcher to be used in spots. He should be given plenty of time to get his act together. He certainly is no answer for our pitching limitations.
  24. Our pitching performance tonight shows us how well Porcello pitched last night. No comparison. Their pitching has cooled off our hitting. Only Betts, Bogey and Vasquez hit well last night and we are off to a weak start. Some of our guys look overmatched. Maybe they will come to life but the hole is a big one.
  25. We do seem to get our daily surfeit of stats on this board. Be nice to see some conclusions from all of this.
